2 1 - animate imaging (01/15/2010) boundary condition BEGINNING TO REACH FOR THE BOUNDARY relating boundary to edge: branching/bifurcation REACHING IN MULTIPLE DIRECTIONS BRANCHING TO THE MAXIMUM CAPACITY growth of connective tissue REACHING WITHIN TO ENCLOSE SPACE ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIP TO EDGE diagram articulating animation process animation sequence
3 2 - dissecting animate constructs (01/22/2010) 5.To develop the relationship in three dimensions, duplicate every other curve, beginning with the second in from the boundary. Using a lattice, pull the central control points up in the z direction. In the tighter branches created in step 4, pull the central control points down in the z direction.6.for the major sections, beginning with the boundary curve, loft to the next raised curve; from there, loft directly below to the original curve; continue the pattern.7.for the minor sections, beginning from the intersection point of the surface with the original object, loft from that original curve to the nearest raised curve, then loft directly down to the original curve; continue the pattern.8.once all surfaces have been lofted and all area has been filled, the new surfaces may be differentiated by their geometry and placement within the structure. The upper, longer surfaces may be grouped together, while the smaller, vertical spaces may also be grouped together. Production process animate imaging. 1. Loft edges of given object to boundary edges (4 major and 4 minor/corner); extract curves from surfaces; delete surfaces. 2.Pattern (major surfaces): line adjacent to boundary line (and every other line thereafter) move one end point down & one up, creating a curved line. The boundary can be reached by following the series of curved and straight lines in a switchback pattern.3. Pattern (minor surfaces): move end point of each line and snap to closest point on next line up, alternating left/right end points. The boundary can also be reached by climbing the serpentine flow of attached lines to the original object. 4.Fill/branching: in the largest space between two lines in each major surface area, loft the two lines together and extract curves from the surfaces; delete surfaces.
4 E E A A C C E E A A C C B B D D F F B B D D F F maya: major surfaces and patterns were developed by moving control points and utilizing the lattice function; lofting was carried out between individual curves based upon the predetermined pattern. grasshopper: individual curves could not be easily manipulated unless assigned placeholder widgets; patterns were attempted by extracting isocurves and manipulating by a unit vector in the Z direction. 3 - assembling parametric equivalents 02/01/2010 maya model demonstrates localized differentiation resulting from the application of a pattern. grasshopper contains the potential for differentiation by the utilization of variables (sliders), but it appears to be more difficult to generate localized differentiation within a contruct. better knowledge and understanding of the software may prove otherwise. resolved maya model includes layers, keyframe animation and material selection to better explore the relationship between the object and its boundary condition. grasshopper model is still in the development phase; further exploration is necessary to resolve to the level of the maya model. surfaces oriented to frames in grasshopper comparing grasshopper & maya production processes labelled cut sheet prepared in grasshopper
