1 Example of StraboSpot Application Made on an ipad Mini4 using StraboSpot v1.4.1, This show demonstrates briefly the basic functionality of StraboSpot and some of the operations for adding and relating data. It demonstrates the basic concepts of Spot, Tag, Purpose, and Relationship. The show also gives insight into project and dataset management. The application runs on either ios or Android devices. It can be downloaded from either the Apple App Store or Google Play. More information is available at An online version is also available at this site. The application is free. It was developed using funding from the National Science Foundation.

2 Point By pressing this tool, you will add a Point to your map. Line By pressing the Line tool, add a line by continually pressing on your map, double tap to end Polygon The polygon tool allows you to make an area into a Spot. This will also nest Spots within the polygon. Edit Tool The Edit tool allows you to change locations of your Spots. Press the Edit tool, move the anchor point/spot to new location and save. Image Basemap: Point This appears in the Spot listing. This means the Spot is on an Image Basemap Map Layers Toggle between which map is showing, which datasets are displayed, and turn overlays on and off. GPS Pressing the GPS button locates your location on the map. 3 Line Menu Pressing this displays the main menu. 3 Dot Menu The 3 dot menu allows you to save tiles for offline downloading along with other options. This will also change depending on the page. Image Basemap: Line This appears in the Spot listing. This means the Spot is on an Image Basemap Filter Filter what Spots are displayed. Filter according to Add Press to add content to Spots or which ever page this is displayed on. Toggles Zoom between zoom levels either zoom in, or zoom out. Wi-Fi on/off This tells you if you are currently connected to a source of data being either Wi-Fi or cellular data. Image Basemap: Polygon This appears in the Spot listing. This means the Spot is on an Image Basemap Common icons found in the StraboSpot application.

3 BEFORE THE FIELD Starting A Project Create and begin a new project for field area. Input details about the specific project and create datasets. Set magnetic declination in Project Description Add New Basemaps Create and import a customized basemap from Mapbox or MapWarper. Download Tiles For Offline Use Save map tiles that will be used for your map area. *Only if you won t be connected to Internet. IN THE FIELD AFTER THE FIELD Make A Point Use the Point tool option to create a single point. Add attributes to each Point that will be saved to this specific Spot. Spot can be GPS located Submit A Daily Log Use the Daily Setup tool under the Description heading to annotate each day. (i.e. weather, health ) Make A Line Use the Line option to create a line Spot. Add attributes to each Spot that are specific to these linear features. Lines are usually called Traces. Add Tags Create a Tag and add it to Spots of any type. Tags are stored at the project level. Review / Edit Following data entry, correct or fix errors on the map by using the edit tool or review and edit attributes within each Spot. Upload / Export Save your work by exporting and uploading your data. You can save your work to your Strabo account and backup all your data to your device. Make A Polygon Use the Polygon option to create an area Spot along with supporting data. Add attributes to each Polygon that are specific to each area region defined. Nests / Relationships Formulate Nests and Relationships between Spots. Nests are associations by location. Other Relationships like crosscutting can be established between Spots. 5 Logging In and Setup

6 Initial startup screen. Users can login if they have a StraboSpot account or create a new account. They can skip this step (lower right).

8 First screen that appears. This is the Manage Project page. Users create a project if none exists. If project is present the user is taken to it (see more below).

9 Spot list of all spots. Image list and thumbnail of all images. Samples list of all samples. Relationships list of all relationships. Main Map goes to the last location on a map and displays the users background basemap. Image Basemaps Images on which the user is mapping. Other Basemaps Allows user to see and manage other maps from online sources. Offline Basemaps Basemaåps saved for offline use. Manage switch, upload/download, and export/import data. Description text describing the project. Preferences which data pages are displayed and numbering to Spots and Samples. Miscellaneous access to testing. About Strabo information about the app. Note in the upper left the icon with three lines in the red circle. This takes the user to the main activities of StraboSpot.

10 New Project create a new StraboSpot Project. Switch Project allows users to change projects. Upload Project uploads data to StraboSpot server. Download Project downloads data from StraboSpot server. Export Project to Device puts a copy of the data and images into the file system of the device. Import Project from Device loads a copy of data and images from the device. Note: Switch Project, Upload Project, and Download Project are only available when the device is online and connected to the Internet. Throughout the app, the icon with three dots in the upper right gives access to more commands on each page. Shown here are management commands.

11 Create New Project form. Only project name is required. Note, required items are underline in red.

15 Users can choose which dataset to add new Spots to. Note that Spots can be added to only one dataset at a time, but multiple datasets can be viewed or considered active.

18 Zoom in or out From top to bottom: add Point Spot, add Line Spot, add Polygon Spot, edit Spots. Zoom to GPS position More map commands Device online (green) or offline (red). Set layers and basemaps to display. Can turn off Spots or entire datasets. Preloaded baesmaps include Open Street Maps (OSM), and Satellite and Topographic data from Mapbox (mapbox.com). Topo map is shown. Users can add other tiled basemaps using the Other Basemap menu. Zoom level Information about basemap Scale bar Main map view with tools and controls.

19 Switch to Satellite view.

20 Pressing on the line and polygon tools will toggle between drawing with straight line segments and free form drawing. Note, freeform drawing adds many more vertices and makes Spots harder to edit. More options on Spot drawing.

22 To use maps offline the user must save it to the device. Maps are presented in tiles at different zoom levels by services providing the images. Each increasing level requires about 4 times more tiles. The first zoom level is that of the current map. All coarser levels are loaded automatically. Pushing the check box computes the number of tiles required. Saving Map for Offline Use. Map tiles must be saved to user maps while the device is offline.

23 Each offline map is given a name. You must have a new offline map for each basemap source Satellite, OSM, Topo, or user uploaded. You can add more tiles of the same type to any existing map. Users can zoom in on Main Map to get more detailed tiles. StraboSpot only lists some of the finer scale tile levels. Naming map and choosing tile zoom levels to download.

24 Progress of downloading is displayed. If tiles fail, the user is notified and can reload them at the previous screen. Note downloading several thousand tiles can cause the app to freeze.

27 Creating a Spot (line)

28 Drawing a line Spot. This roughly follows a fault of red against white. Double click to end the line.

29 Once line (or any Spot) is completed the Spot page is displayed giving basic information about the Spot. A unique ID is assigned as name.

30 For lines, the Spot can be classified as a Trace meaning it has geologic significance on the map. This also prompts the user to classify the Spot and describe it. Only the type of Trace is required. Spots can be renamed, but still preserve a unique ID. StraboSpot has many drop down menus for quick data input.

32 Spot is renamed Edit Spot Spot has been renamed. Select Edit spot to move, add, and/or delete vertices.

33 Edit Spot Pressing on vertex selects it and allows user to move. Pressing on line adds a vertex. Pressing, holding, and releasing deletes a vertex.

39 Preferences sets which pages are display with the Spot for adding attributes. Orientations, images, and nesting are enabled. Users can also set sample and Spot numbering and prefixes. Users can control whether Project is public (exposedz or private (hidden) at StraboSpotorg. Selecting which pages to display on the Spot page, and setting other Project properties on the Preferences page.

40 Selecting Spots from the three-line icon shows a list of Spots.

41 The spot name just created is shown. Tapping a Spot s name opens the dialog for the Spot.

44 Adding a point Spot to the map. Name is initially the unique ID assigned to the Spot.

45 Tapping Spot label opens dialog to add attributes or take a photo to add an image (camera icon).

46 Other page options available for adding attributes, here orientations, images, and nesting. Spot is renamed. More takes the user back to the Preferences page.

47 Orientation page accessed by pressing Orientations. Users add planes, lines, or tabular zone. Data copied from Stereonet Mobile can be imported from the clipboard.

48 Adding a plane feature. Users can input data or select to use a built-in compass in StraboSpot.

51 Pressing the feature attribute opens it for editing (next page). Users can add Tags, duplicate the measurement or delete the measurement (upper left).

54 Pressing Image to take a picture at the Spot. Can also use the Camera icon on upper right.

55 User can take a new picture or add any image from a saved file.

57 Image can be named and described. Additional information can be added (next page). The image Spot can be shown on map. Lastly, the image can become a basemap (toggle).

62 Image name is used for the Image Basemap name. Tapping name brings up the image as a basemap.

63 All Spot tools are available for Image Basemaps. Spots can be added. Information is added as attributed data to the StraboSpot database.

68 Example of adding a Tag to a Spot. Here the Tag is added directly at the Spot page as a Geologic Unit. Other Tags can be added at the three-line menu or by turning on Tags page.

74 Relationships are built using this dialog. Users set Spots, features, or Tags to participate in relationships. Each relationship is given a name.
