CONSTRUCTION OF SCALAR AND VECTOR FINITE ELEMENT FAMILIES ON POLYGONAL AND POLYHEDRAL MESHES ANDREW GILLETTE, ALEXANDER RAND, AND CHANDRAJIT BAJAJ Abstract. We combne theoretcal results from polytope doman meshng, generalzed barycentrc coordnates, and fnte element exteror calculus to construct scalar- and vector-valued bass functons for conformng fnte element methods on generc convex polytope meshes n dmensons and 3. Our constructon recovers well-known bases for the lowest order Nédélec, Ravart-Thomas, and Brezz-Douglas-Marn elements on smplcal meshes and generalzes the noton of Whtney forms to non-smplcal convex polygons and polyhedra. We show that our bass functons le n the correct functon space wth regards to global contnuty and that they reproduce the requste polynomal dfferental forms descrbed by fnte element exteror calculus. We present a method to count the number of bass functons requred to ensure these two key propertes. arxv: v [math.na] 6 Apr Introducton. In ths work, we jon and expand three threads of research n the analyss of modern fnte element methods: polytope doman meshng, generalzed barycentrc coordnates, and famles of fnte-dmensonal soluton spaces characterzed by fnte element exteror calculus. It s well-known that on smplcal meshes, standard barycentrc coordnates provde a local bass for the lowest-order H 1 -conformng scalar-valued fnte element spaces, commonly called the Lagrange elements. Further, local bases for the lowest-order vector-valued Brezz-Douglas-Marn [10], Ravart-Thomas [43], and Nédélec [9, 37, 38] fnte element spaces on smplces can also be defned n a canoncal fashon from an assocated set of standard barycentrc functons. Here, we use generalzed barycentrc coordnates n an analogous fashon on meshes of convex polytopes, n dmensons and 3, to construct local bases wth the same global contnuty and polynomal reproducton propertes as ther smplcal counterparts. We have prevously analyzed lnear order, scalar-valued methods on polygonal meshes [4, 40] usng four dfferent types of generalzed barycentrc coordnates: Wachspress [49, 50], Sbson [17, 45], harmonc [1, 9, 35], and mean value [18, 0, 1]. The analyss was extended by Gllette, Floater and Sukumar n the case of Wachspress coordnates to convex polytopes n any dmenson [19], based on work by Warren and colleagues [30, 51, 5]. We have also shown how takng parwse products of generalzed barycentrc coordnates can be used to construct quadratc order methods on polygons [41]. Applcatons of generalzed barycentrc coordnates to fnte element methods have prmarly focused on scalar-valued PDE problems [36, 4, 47, 48, 54]. Our expanson n ths paper to vector-valued methods s nspred by Whtney dfferental forms, frst defned n [53]. Bossavt recognzed that Whtney forms could be used to construct bass functons for computatonal electromagnetcs [7]. The theory of fnte element exteror calculus unfed subsequent research n ths area [3]. In partcular, Arnold, Falk and Wnther showed how functons lke those appearng n Table 1.1 can be used to buld spannng sets and bases for any the P r Λ k and Pr Λ k spaces on smplces [4]. The FENCS Project [] has mplemented these functons on smplces as part of a broadly applcable open source fnte element software package. Some pror work has explored the possblty of Whtney functons over non-smplcal elements n specfc cases of rectangular grds [5], square-base pyramds [6], and prsms [8]. Other authors have examned the ablty of generalzed Whtney functons to recover constant-valued forms n certan cases [16, 31], whereas here we show ther ablty to reproduce all the elements of the spaces denoted P1 Λk n fnte element exteror calculus. Gllette and Bajaj consdered the use of generalzed Whtney forms on polytope meshes defned by dualty from a smplcal mesh [, 3], whch llustrated potental benefts to dscrete exteror calculus [7], computatonal magnetostatcs, and Darcy flow modelng. Recent work [34] has also shown generalzed barycentrc coordnates to be effectve when used n tandem wth vrtual element methods [6], whch are developed n a smlar fashon to tradtonal mmetc methods [3]. Usng the bases defned n Table 1.1, our man results are summarzed n Table 1.. On a mesh of convex n-dmensonal polytopes n R n wth n = or 3, we construct computatonal bass functons assocated to the polytope elements for each dfferental form order k as ndcated. Each functon s bult from generalzed barycentrc coordnates, denoted λ, and ther gradents; formulae for the Whtney-lke functons, denoted Department of Mathematcs, Unversty of Arzona, Tucson, AZ, USA, agllette@math.arzona.edu CD-adapco, Austn, TX, USA, alexander.rand@cd-adapco.com Department of Computer Scence, Insttute for Computatonal Engneerng and Scences, Unversty of Texas at Austn, Austn, TX, USA, bajaj@cs.utexas.edu 1

W, are gven n Secton.3. In the vector-valued cases (0 < k < n), we prove that the functons agree on tangental or normal components at nter-element boundares, provdng global contnuty n H(curl) or H(dv). The two famles of polynomal dfferental forms that are reproduced, P r Λ k and P r Λ k, were shown to recover and generalze the classcal smplcal fnte element spaces mentoned prevously, va the theory of fnte element exteror calculus [3, 5]. The outlne of the paper s as follows. In Secton, we descrbe relevant theory and pror work n the areas of fnte element exteror calculus, generalzed barycentrc coordnates, and Whtney forms. In Secton 3, we show how the functons lsted n Table 1.1 can be used to buld pecewse-defned functons wth global contnuty n H 1, H(curl) or H(dv), as ndcated. In Secton 4, we show how these same functons can reproduce the requste polynomal dfferental forms from P 1 Λ k or P1 Λk, as ndcated n Table 1.1, by exhbtng explct lnear combnatons whose coeffcents depend only on the locaton of the vertces of the mesh. In Secton 5, we count the bass functons constructed by our approach on generc polygons and polyhedra and explan how the sze of the bass could be reduced n certan cases.. Background and pror work..1. Spaces from Fnte Element Exteror Calculus. Fnte element spaces can be broadly classfed accordng to three parameters: n, the spatal dmenson of the doman, r, the order of error decay, and k, the dfferental form order of the soluton space. The k parameter can be understood n terms of the
classcal fnte element sequence for a doman Ω R n wth n = or 3, commonly wrtten as n = : H 1 grad n = 3 : H 1 grad Note that for n =, gven F (x, y) := curl F := F 1 y F x, rot F := H(curl) rot H(dv) curl H(curl) [ ] F1 (x, y), we use the defntons: F (x, y) H(dv) dv L dv L [ ] 0 1 F and dv F 1 0 := F 1 x + F y. Thus, n R, we have both curl φ = 0 and dv rot φ = 0 for any φ H. Put dfferently, rot gves an somorphsm from H(curl) to H(dv) n R. In some cases we wll wrte H(curl, Ω) and H(dv, Ω) f we wsh to emphasze the doman n consderaton. In the termnology of dfferental topology, the applcable sequence s descrbed more smply as the L derham complex of Ω. The spaces are re-cast as dfferental form spaces HΛ k and the operators as nstances of the exteror dervatve d k, yeldng n = : HΛ 0 d 0 HΛ 1 d 1 HΛ n = 3 : HΛ 0 d 0 HΛ 1 d 1 HΛ d HΛ 3 Fnte element methods seek approxmate solutons to a PDE n fnte dmensonal subspaces Λ k h of the HΛ k spaces, where h denotes the maxmum dameter of a doman element assocated to the subspace. The theory of fnte element exteror calculus classfes two famles of sutable choces of Λ k h spaces on meshes of smplces, denoted P r Λ k and Pr Λ k [3, 5]. The space P r Λ k s defned as those dfferental forms whch, when appled to a constant vector feld, have the ndcated polynomal dependence [5, p. 38]. Ths can be nterpreted nformally as the set of dfferental k forms wth polynomal coeffcents of total degree at most r. The space Pr Λ k s then defned as the drect sum (.1) P r Λ k := P r 1 Λ k κh r 1 Λ k+1, where κ s the Koszul operator and H r denotes homogeneous polynomals of degree r [5, p. 331]. We wll use the coordnate formulaton of κ, gven n [5, p. 39] as follows. Let ω Λ k and suppose that t can be wrtten n local coordnates as ω x = a(x)dx σ1 dx σk. Then κω s wrtten as (.) (κω) x := k ( 1) +1 a(x)x σ() dx σ1 dx σ dx σk, =1 where denotes the wedge product and dx σ means that the term s omtted. For example, let n = 3 and wrte x, y, z for x 1, x, x 3. Then dydz H 0 Λ and κdydz = ydz zdy H 1 Λ 1. We summarze the relatonshp between the spaces P 1 Λ k, P 1 Λk and certan well-known fnte element famles n dmenson n = or 3 n Table.1. A crucal property of P r Λ k and P r Λ k s that each ncludes n ts span a suffcent number of polynomal dfferental k-forms to ensure an a pror error estmate of order r n HΛ k norm. In the classcal descrpton of fnte element spaces, ths approxmaton power s mmedate; any computatonal or local bass used for mplementaton of these spaces must, by defnton, span the requste polynomal dfferental forms. The man results of ths paper are proofs that generalzed barycentrc coordnates can be used as local bases on polygonal and polyhedral element geometres to create analogues to the lowest order P r Λ k and P r Λ k spaces wth the same polynomal approxmaton power and global contnuty propertes. In the remander of the paper, we wll frequently use standard vector proxes [1] n place of dfferental form notaton, as ndcated here: [ u1 u ] T u 1 dx 1 + u dx Λ 1 (R ), [ v1 v v 3 ] T v 1 dx 1 + v dx + v 3 dx 3 Λ 1 (R 3 ), [ w1 w w 3 ] T w 1 dx dx 3 + w dx 3 dx 1 + w 3 dx 1 dx Λ (R 3 ). 3

Further explanaton of these relatonshps can be found n [3, 5]. Our constructons, when reduced to smplces, recover known local bases for each of these spaces... Generalzed Barycentrc Coordnates. Let m be a convex n-dmensonal polytope n R n wth vertex set {v }, wrtten as column vectors. A set of non-negatve functons {λ } : m R are called generalzed barycentrc coordnates on m f for any lnear functon L : m R, we can wrte (.3) L = L(v )λ, We wll use the notaton I to denote the n n dentty matrx and x to denote the vector [ x 1 x ] T x n where x s the th coordnate n R n. We have the followng useful denttes: (.4) λ (x) = 1 (.5) (.6) (.7) v λ (x) = x λ (x) = 0 v λ T (x) = I Equatons (.4) and (.5) follow mmedately from (.3) whle (.6) and (.7) follow by takng the gradent of equatons (.4) and (.5), respectvely. If x s constraned to an n 1 dmensonal facet of m and the ndex set of the summatons are lmted to those vertces that defne m, then (.4)-(.7) stll hold; n partcular, ths mples that generalzed barycentrc coordnates on a polyhedron restrct to generalzed barycentrc coordnates on each of ts polygonal faces. As mentoned n the ntroducton, there are many approaches to defnng generalzed barycentrc coordnates. In regards to applcatons n fnte element methods, the Wachspress coordnates [49, 50] are commonly used as they are ratonal functons n both D and 3D wth explct formulae; code for ther mplementaton n MATLAB s gven n the appendx of [19]. Other practcal choces of generalzed barycentrc coordnates for fnte elements nclude mean value [18], maxmum entropy [8, 46], and movng least squares [33]. The results of ths work do not rely on any propertes of the coordnates other than ther non-negatvty and lnear reproducton property (.3)..3. Whtney forms. Let m be a convex n-dmensonal polytope n R n wth vertex set {v } and an assocated set of generalzed barycentrc coordnates {λ }. Defne assocated sets of ndex pars and trples 4
by (.8) (.9) E := {(, j) : v, v j m}, T := {(, j, k) : v, v j, v k m}. If m s a smplex, the elements of the set {λ λ j λ j λ : (, j) E} are called Whtney 1-forms and are part of a more general constructon [53], whch we now present. Agan, f m s a smplex, the Whtney k-forms are elements of the set { } k (.10) k! ( 1) λ j dλ j0... dλ j... dλ jk, =0 where j 0,..., j k are ndces of vertces of m. As before, denotes the wedge product and dx σ means that the term s omtted. Up to sgn, ths yelds a set of ( n+1 k+1) dstnct functons and provdes a local bass for P1 Λk [4]. We now generalze these defntons to the case where m s non necessarly a smplex. For any (, j) E, defne a generalzed Whtney 1-form on m by (.11) W j := λ λ j λ j λ. If n = 3, then for any (, j, k) T, defne a generalzed Whtney -form on m by (.1) W jk := (λ λ j λ k ) + (λ j λ k λ ) + (λ k λ λ j ). Note that W = 0 and f, j, and k are not dstnct then W jk = 0. Whtney forms have natural nterpretatons as vector felds when k = 1 or n 1. Interpolaton of vector felds requres less data regularty than the canoncal scalar nterpolaton theory usng nodal values. Averaged nterpolaton developed for scalar spaces [14, 44] has been extended to famles of spaces from fnte element exteror calculus [13]. Recent results on polygons and polyhedra can be extended to less regular data wth average nterpolaton followng the framework n [39], based on affne nvarance of the coordnates. 3. Global Contnuty Results. We frst present results about the global contnuty propertes of vector-valued functons defned n terms of generalzed barycentrc coordnates and ther gradents over a mesh of n-dmensonal polytopes n R n wth n = or 3. By mesh we mean a cellular complex n whch each cell s a polygon (for n = ) or polyhedron (for n = 3); for more on cellular complexes see e.g. [1]. Vorono meshes are examples of cellular complexes snce they are composed of n-dmensonal polytopes that meet along ther n 1 dmensonal facets. We say that a functon s defned pecewse wth respect to a mesh when the defnton of the functon on the nteror of a mesh element depends only on geometrcal propertes of the element (as opposed to dependng on adjacent elements, for nstance). We begn wth a general result about global contnuty n such a settng. Proposton 3.1. Fx a mesh M of n-dmensonal polytopes n R n wth n = or 3. Let u be a vector feld defned pecewse wth respect to M. Let f be a face of codmenson 1 wth u 1, u denotng the values of u on f as defned by the two n-dmensonal mesh elements sharng f. Wrte u = T f (u ) + N f (u ) where T f (u ) and N f (u ) are the vector projectons of u onto f and ts outward normal, respectvely. (.) If T f (u 1 ) = T f (u ) for all f M then u H(curl, M). (.) If N f (u 1 ) = N f (u ) for all f M then u H(dv, M). The results of Proposton 3.1 are well-known n the fnte element communty; see e.g. Ern and Guermond [15, Secton 1.4]. Proposton 3.. Let m be a convex n-dmensonal polytope n R n wth vertex set {v } I and an assocated set of generalzed barycentrc coordnates {λ } I. Let f be a face of m of codmenson 1 whose vertces are ndexed by J I. If k J then λ k 0 on f and λ k s normal to f on f, pontng nward. 5
Fg. 3.1: The H(curl) conformty condton of Proposton 3.1 s satsfed automatcally by the λ λ j functons, as shown n the example above. When the elements are brought together, the vector felds wll agree on the projecton to the shared edge at any pont along the shared edge. Here, and j are the ndces for the vertces at the top and bottom, respectvely, of the shared edge. For ths example, we used the Wachspress functons to compute the vector functons on each element and MATLAB to vsualze the result. Proof. Fx a pont x 0 m. Observe that I v λ (x 0 ) s a pont n m lyng n the nteror of the convex hull of those v for whch λ (x 0 ) > 0, snce the λ are non-negatve by defnton. By (.5), ths summaton s equal to x 0. Hence, f x 0 f, then λ k 0 on f unless k J, provng the frst clam. The same argument mples that for any k J, f s part of the zero level set of λ k. Hence, for k J, λ k s orthogonal to f on f. In that case, λ k ponts nward snce λ k has support nsde m but not on the other sde of f. We now show that generalzed barycentrc coordnates and ther gradents defned over ndvdual elements n a mesh of polytopes naturally sttch together to buld conformng fnte elements wth global contnuty of the expected knd. Fgure 3.1 presents an example of two vector functons agreeng on ther tangental projectons along a shared edge. To be clear about the context, we ntroduce notaton for generalzed barycentrc hat functons, defned pecewse over a mesh of polytopes {m} by { λ (x) as defned on m f x m and v m; ˆλ (x) = 0 f x m but v m. Note that generalzed barycentrc coordnates λ are usually ndexed locally on a partcular polytope whle the ˆλ requre a global ndexng of the vertces to consstently dentfy matchng functons across element boundares. Further, ˆλ s well-defned at vertces and edges of the mesh as any choce of generalzed barycentrc coordnates on a partcular element wll gve the same value at such ponts. If x belongs to the nteror of shared faces between polyhedra n R 3 (or hgher order analogues), ˆλ (x) s well-defned so long as the same knd of generalzed barycentrc coordnates are chosen on each of the ncdent polyhedra (e.g. Wachspress or mean value). Our frst result about global contnuty concerns functons of the form ˆλ ˆλ j, where and j are ndces of vertces belongng to at least one fxed mesh element m. Note that the vertces v and v j need not defne an edge of m. Theorem 3.3. Fx a mesh M of n-dmensonal polytopes {m} n R n wth n = or 3 and assgn some orderng v 1,..., v p to all the vertces n the mesh. Fx an assocated set of generalzed barycentrc coordnate hat functons ˆλ 1,..., ˆλ p. Let u span {ˆλ ˆλ j : m M such that v, v j m}. Then u H(curl, M). Proof. Followng the notaton of Proposton 3.1, t suffces to show that T f (u 1 ) = T f (u ) for an arbtrary face f M of codmenson 1. Consder an arbtrary term c j ˆλ ˆλ j n the lnear combnaton defnng u. 6
Observe that f v f, then by Proposton 3., ˆλ 0 on f and hence u 0 on f. Further, f v j f, then ˆλ j s orthogonal to f. Therefore, wthout loss of generalty, we can reduce to the case where v, v j f. Snce ˆλ and ˆλ j are both C 0 on M, ther well-defned values on f suffce to determne the projecton of ˆλ ˆλ j to f. Snce the choce of par j was arbtrary, we have T f (u 1 ) = T f (u ), completng the proof. Remark 3.4. When n =, we may replace ˆλ ˆλ j n the statement Theorem 3.3 by rot ˆλ ˆλ j and conclude that u H(dv, M). Ths s mmedate snce rot gves an somorphsm between H(curl) and H(dv) n R, as dscussed n Secton.1. When n = 3, we construct functons n H(dv, M) usng trples of ndces assocated to vertces of mesh elements, accordng to the next result. Theorem 3.5. Fx a mesh M of polyhedra {m} n R 3 and assgn some orderng v 1,..., v p to all the vertces n the mesh. Fx an assocated set of generalzed barycentrc coordnate hat functons ˆλ 1,..., ˆλ p. Let u span {ˆλ ˆλ j ˆλ k : m M such that v, v j, v k m}. Then u H(dv, M). Proof. Agan followng the notaton of Proposton 3.1, t suffces to show that N f (u 1 ) = N f (u ) for an arbtrary face f M of codmenson one whose vertces are ndexed by J. We wll use the shorthand notaton ξ jk := ˆλ ˆλ j ˆλ k. Consder an arbtrary term c jk ξ jk n the lnear combnaton defnng u. We wll frst show that ξ jk has a non-zero normal component on f only f, j, k J. If J then ˆλ 0 on f by Proposton 3., makng ξ jk 0 on f, as well. If J but j, k J, then ˆλ j and ˆλ k are both normal to f on f by Proposton 3.. Hence, ther cross product s zero and agan ξ jk 0 on F. If, j J but k J then agan ˆλ k f on f. Snce ˆλ j ˆλ k ˆλ k, we conclude that ξ jk has no normal component on f. The same argument holds for the case, k J, j J. The only remanng case s, j, k J, provng the clam. Thus, wthout loss of generalty, we assume that, j, k J. Snce ˆλ j and ˆλ k are both C 0 on M, ther well-defned values on f suffce to determne the projecton of ˆλ j and ˆλ k to f, whch then unquely defnes the normal component of ˆλ j ˆλ k on f. Snce ˆλ s also C 0 on M, and the choce of, j, k was arbtrary, we have N f (u 1 ) = N f (u ), completng the proof. 4. Polynomal Reproducton Results. We now show how generalzed barycentrc coordnate functons λ and ther gradents can reproduce all the polynomal dfferental forms n P 1 Λ k and P 1 Λk for 0 k n wth n = or 3. The results for the functons λ λ j and W j extend mmedately to any value of n snce those functons do not use any dmenson-specfc operators lke or rot. Theorem 4.1. Fx n. Let m be a convex n-dmensonal polytope n R n wth vertex set {v }. Gven any set of generalzed barycentrc coordnates {λ } assocated to m, (4.1) λ λ j (v j v ) T = I, where I s the n n dentty matrx. Further, for any n n matrx A, (4.) (Av v j )(λ λ j ) = Ax. Thus, span {λ λ j : v, v j m} P 1 Λ 1 (m). Proof. From (.4) - (.7), we see that ( ) λ λ j (v j v ) T = λ λ j v T j j j = 1(I T ) 0(x T ) = I, ( ) λ j λ v T 7
establshng (4.1). Smlarly for (4.), a bt of algebra yelds (Av v j )(λ λ j ) = (λ λ j )v T j Av = λ j v T j Av λ = ( ) λ j v T j A v λ = I T Ax = Ax j We have shown that any vector of lnear polynomals can be wrtten as a lnear combnaton of λ λ j functons, hence the span of these functons contans the vector proxes for all elements of P 1 Λ 1 (m). Corollary 4.. Let m be a convex polygon n R wth vertex set {v }. Gven any set of generalzed barycentrc coordnates {λ } assocated to m, (4.3) rot λ λ j (rot(v j v )) T = I, where I s the dentty matrx. Further, for any matrx A, (4.4) ( rot A v v j )(rot λ λ j ) = Ax. Thus, span {rotλ λ j : v, v j m} P 1 Λ 1 (m). [ ] [ ] Proof. For (4.3), observe that for any w, y R, wy T a b = mples (rot w)(rot y) T d c =. c d b a Hence, the result follows mmedately from (4.1). For (4.4), note rot 1 = rot and defne B := rot A. Usng B as the matrx n (4.), we have (Bv v j )(λ λ j ) = Bx Applyng rot to both sdes of the above yelds the result. Theorem 4.3. Let m be a convex polyhedron n R 3 wth vertex set {v }. Gven any set of generalzed barycentrc coordnates {λ } assocated to m, (4.5) 1 λ λ j λ k ((v j v ) (v k v )) T = I,,k where I s the n n dentty matrx. Further, for any n n matrx A, (4.6) 1 (Av (v j v k ))(λ λ j λ k ) = Ax.,k Thus, span {λ λ j λ k : v, v j, v k m} P 1 Λ (m). Proof. We start wth (4.5). Frst, observe that By (.6), we have that (v j v ) (v k v ) = v v j + v j v k + v k v.,k λ λ j λ k (v v j ) T = ( )) λ ( λ j λ k (v v j ) T = 0. A smlar argument shows that replacng v v j wth v k v also yelds the zero matrx. Hence, λ λ j λ k (v j v k ) T,k λ λ j λ k ((v j v ) (v k v )) T =,k 8 k
= λ ( λ j λ k ) (v j v k ) T = ( λ j λ k ) (v j v k ) T. To smplfy ths further, we use the Kronecker delta symbol δ 1 and the 3D Lev-Cvta symbol ε 1 3. It suffces to show that the entry n row r, column c of the matrx ( λ j λ k ) (v j v k ) T s δ rc. We see that ( λ j λ k ) (v j v k ) T = ε rlm ( λ j ) l ( λ k ) m ε cpq (v j ) p (v k ) q rc = ε rlm ε cpq (v j ) p ( λ j ) l (v k ) q ( λ k ) m = ε rlm ε cpq δ lp δ mq. The last step n the above chan of equaltes follows from (.7). Observe that ε rlm ε cpq δ lp δ mq = ε rlm ε clm = δ rc, as desred. For (4.6), observe that ( ) (Av (v j v k ))(λ λ j λ k ) = Av λ (v j v k )( λ j λ k ),k = j ( λ j λ k )(v j v k ) T ( = I Ax = Ax. k A v λ ) Note that we used the proof of (4.5) to rewrte the sum over j, k as I. We have shown that any vector of lnear polynomals can be wrtten as a lnear combnaton of λ λ j λ k functons, hence the span of these functons contans the vector proxes for all elements of P 1 Λ (m). Theorem 4.4. Let m be a convex polygon n R wth vertex set {v }. Gven any set of generalzed barycentrc coordnates {λ } assocated to m, (4.7) 1 Further, for any vector a R, (4.8) λ λ j rot λ k ((v j v ) rot(v k v )) = 1.,k 1 (a T v (v j rotv k ))(λ λ j rot λ k ) = a T x.,k Thus, span {λ λ j rot λ k : v, v j, v k m} P 1 Λ (m). Proof. The proof s essentally dentcal to that of Theorem 4.3. Frst, and by (.6), (v j v ) rot(v k v ) = v rotv j + v j rotv k + v k rotv,,k λ λ j rot λ k (v rotv j ) = ( )) λ ( λ j rot λ k (v rotv j ) = 0. k A smlar argument shows that replacng v rotv j wth v k rotv also yelds zero. Hence as before, λ λ j rot λ k ((v j v ) rot(v k v )) T = ( λ j rot λ k ) (v j rotv k ) T.,k 9
Fnally, the same argument holds usng the D Lev-Cvta symbol: ( λ j rot λ k ) (v j rotv k ) = ε lm ( λ j ) l ( λ k ) m ε pq (v j ) p (v k ) q = ε lm ε pq (v j ) p ( λ j ) l (v k ) q ( λ k ) m j k = ε lm ε pq δ lp δ mq = ε lm ε lm =, establshng (4.7). For (4.8), observe that (a T v (v j rotv k ))(λ λ j rot λ k ),k ( ) = a T v λ (v j rotv k )( λ j rot λ k ) = ( ( λ j rot λ k )(v j rotv k ) T a ) T v λ = a T x. Remark 4.5. The proof of Theorem 4.4 can also be obtaned by augmentng the D vectors and matrces wth zeros to make 3D vectors and matrces and recognzng (4.7) as the element equalty n the thrd row and thrd column of (4.5). We also have polynomal reproducton results usng the Whtney-lke bass functons (.11) and (.1). Recall that H r denotes homogeneous polynomals of degree r and let M n n denote n n matrces. We have the followng theorems. Theorem 4.6. Fx n. Let m be a convex n-dmensonal polytope n R n wth vertex set {v } and an assocated set of generalzed barycentrc coordnates {λ }. Then (4.9) W j (v j v ) T = I. Further, defne a map Φ : H 1 Λ 1 (R n ) M n n by n n a j x j dx [sgn (a j )]. =1 <j j=1 Then for all ω H 0 Λ (R n ), (4.10) (Φ(κω)v ) v j ) W j = (Φ(κω))x. <j Thus, span {W j : v, v j m} P1 Λ1 (m). Proof. For (4.9), we reorganze the summaton and apply (4.1) to see that W j (v j v ) T = λ λ j (v j v ) T λ j λ (v j v ) T <j <j <j = λ λ j (v j v ) T + λ λ j (v j v ) T <j j< = λ λ j (v j v ) T = I. 10
For (4.10), fx ω H 0 Λ (R n ) and express t as ω = <j a j dx dx j, for some coeffcents a j R. Then κω = <j a j (x dx j x j dx ). The entres of the matrx Φ(κω) are thus gven by sgn (a j ) f < j, (4.11) [Φ(κω)] j = sgn (a j ) f > j, 0 f = j. From (4.), we have that (Φ(κω)v ) v j ) λ λ j = (Φ(κω))x, ω H 0 Λ (R n ) Snce Φ(κω) s ant-symmetrc by (4.11), we have that (Φ(κω)v ) v j )λ λ j = (Φ(κω)v ) v j ) λ λ j + (Φ(κω)v ) v j ) λ λ j <j j< = (Φ(κω)v ) v j ) W j. <j We have shown that any vector proxy of an element of P 0 Λ 1 (m) or κh 0 Λ (m) can be wrtten as a lnear combnaton of W j functons. By (.1), we conclude that the span of the W j functons contans the vector proxes for all elements of P 1 Λ1 (m). Corollary 4.7. Let m be a convex polygon n R wth vertex set {v }. Gven any set of generalzed barycentrc coordnates {λ } assocated to m, (4.1) rot W j rot(v j v ) T = I, where I s the dentty matrx. Further, (4.13) ((rot v ) v j ) rot W j = x. <j <j Thus, span {rot W j : v, v j m} P1 Λ1 (m). Proof. By the same argument as the proof of (4.3) n Corollary 4., the dentty (4.1) follows mmedately from (4.9). For (4.13), observe that settng ω := 1 H 0 Λ (R ), we have that Φ(κω) = rot. Therefore, (4.10) mples that (rot v ) v j ) W j = rot x. Applyng rot to both sdes of the above equaton completes the proof. <j Theorem 4.8. Let m be a convex polyhedron n R 3 wth vertex set {v } and an assocated set of generalzed barycentrc coordnates {λ }. Then (4.14) W jk ((v j v ) (v k v )) T = I, 11
and (4.15) (v (v j v k ))W jk = x. Thus, span {W jk : v, v j, v k m} P1 Λ (m). Proof. We adopt the shorthand notatons ξ jk := λ λ j λ k, z jk := (v j v ) (v k v ), v jk := v (v j v k ). For (4.14), we re-wrte (4.5) as ξ jk z T jk = I.,k Observe that ξ jk z T jk = ( ξ kj )( z kj ) T = ξ kj z T kj and z jk = 0 f, j, k are not dstnct. Thus, I = ξ jk z T jk + ξ kj z T kj. k<<j j<k< <k<j k<j< j<<k The two summatons have dfferent labels for the ndces but are otherwse dentcal. Therefore, I = ξ jk z T jk + ξ jk z T jk + T ξ jk z jk = k<<j j<k< ξ jk z jk T + ξ jk z jk T + ξ kj z kj T = T (ξ jk + ξ jk + ξ kj )z jk = W jk ((v j v ) (v k v )) T. For (4.15), we take A as the dentty, and re-wrte (4.6) as v jk ξ jk = x.,k Observe that v jk ξ jk = ( v kj )( ξ kj ) = v kj ξ kj and v jk = 0 f, j, k are not dstnct. Thus, x = v jk ξ jk + v kj ξ kj. k<<j j<k< k<<j <k<j k<j< j<<k The rest of the argument follows smlarly, yeldng x = v jk ξ jk + v jk ξ jk + v jk ξ jk = (v (v j v k ))W jk. Note that H 0 Λ 3 (m) s generated by the volume form η = dxdydz and that κη has vector proxy x. Thus, by (.1), we have shown that the span of the W jk functons contans the vector proxy of any element of P 1 Λ (m). Remark 4.9. There are some addtonal constructons n ths same ven that could be consdered. On a polygon n R, we can defne W jk n the same way as (.1), nterpretng as the two dmensonal cross product. Lkewse, on a polyhedron n R 3, we can defne W jkl accordng to formula (.10), yeldng functons that are summatons of terms lke λ ( λ j ( λ k λ l ). These constructons wll yeld the expected polynomal reproducton results, yet they are not of practcal nterest n fnte element contexts, as we wll see n the next secton. 1 j<k<

Here, v and e denote the number of vertces and edges n the polygonal element m. The column # constructon gves the number of bass functons we defne (cf. Table 1.1), # boundary gves the number of bass functons related to nter-element contnuty, and # polynomal gves the dmenson of the contaned space of polynomal dfferental forms. 5. Polygonal and Polyhedral Fnte Element Famles. Let M be a mesh of convex n-dmensonal polytopes {m} n R n wth n = or 3 and assgn some orderng v 1,..., v p to all the vertces n the mesh. Fx an assocated set of generalzed barycentrc hat functons ˆλ 1,..., ˆλ p as n Secton 3. In Table 1.1, we lst all the types of scalar-valued and vector-valued functons that we have defned ths settng. When used over all elements n a mesh of polygons or polyhedra, these functons have global contnuty and polynomal reproducton propertes as ndcated n Table 1.. These two propertes global contnuty and polynomal reproducton are essental and ntertwned necesstes n the constructon of HΛ k -conformng fnte element methods on any type of doman mesh. Global contnuty of type HΛ k ensures that the pecewse-defned approxmate soluton s an element of the functon space HΛ k n whch a soluton s sought. Polynomal reproducton of type P 1 Λ k or P 1 Λk ensures that the error between the true soluton and the approxmate soluton decays lnearly wth respect to the maxmum dameter of a mesh element, as measured n HΛ k norm. On meshes of smplcal elements, the bass functons lsted n Table 1.1 are known and often used as local bases for the correspondng classcal fnte element spaces lsted n Table.1, meanng our approach recaptulates known methods on smplcal meshes. Relaton to quadrlateral and serendpty elements. Consder the scalar b-quadratc element on rectangles, whch has nne degrees of freedom: one assocated to each vertex, one to each edge mdpont, and one to the center of the square. It has long been known that the serendpty element, whch has only the eght degrees of freedom assocated to the vertces and edge mdponts of the rectangle, s also an H 1 -conformng, quadratc order method. In ths case, polynomal reproducton requres the contanment of P Λ 0 (m) n the span of the bass functons, meanng at least sx functons are requred per element m M. To ensure global contnuty of H 1, however, the method must agree up to quadratcs on each edge, whch necesstates the eght degrees of freedom assocated to the boundary. Therefore, the serendpty space assocated to the scalar b-quadratc element on a rectangle has dmenson eght. In a prevous paper [41], we generalzed ths serendpty reducton to P Λ 0 (M) where M s a mesh of strctly convex polygons n R. For a smple polygon wth n vertces (and thus n edges), polynomal reproducton stll only requres 6 bass functons, whle global contnuty of H 1 stll requres reproducton of quadratcs on edges, leadng to a total of n bass functons requred per element m M. Gven a convex polygon, our approach takes the n + ( n ) parwse products of all the λ functons and forms explct lnear combnatons to yeld a set of n bass functons wth the requred global H 1 contnuty and polynomal reproducton propertes. 13
Reducton of bass sze. A smlar reducton procedure can be appled to the polygonal and polyhedral spaces descrbed n Table 1.1. A key observaton s that the contnuty results of Theorems 3.3 and 3.5 only rely on the agreement of bass functons whose ndces are of vertces on a shared boundary edge (n D) or face (n 3D). For example, f vertces v and v j form the edge of a polygon n a D mesh, H(curl, M) contnuty across the edge comes from dentcal tangental contrbutons n the λ λ j and λ j λ functons from ether element contanng ths edge and zero tangental contrbutons from all other bass functons. Thus, bass functons whose ndces do not belong to a sngle polygon edge (n D) or polyhedral face (n 3D) do not contrbute to nter-element contnuty, allowng the bass sze to be reduced. n k space # constructon # boundary # polynomal 3 0 P 1 Λ 0 (m) v v 4 P1 Λ0 (m) v v 4 ( ) ( f ) v 1 P 1 Λ 1 (m) v a (v a 1) e 1 a=1 ( ) ( f ( ) ) v P1 va Λ1 (m) e 6 a=1 ( ) v f P 1 Λ v a (v a 1)(v a ) (m) a=1 ( ) v f ( ) v P1 Λ (m) ( ) a=1 v 3 P 1 Λ 3 (m) ( ) v P1 Λ3 (m) Table 5.: The n = 3 verson of Table 5.1. Here, f denotes the number of faces on a polyhedral element m and v a denotes the number of vertces on a partcular face f a. The entres of the # boundary column are determned by countng functons assocated to each face of the polyhedron and, n the k = 1 cases, accountng for double-countng by subtracton. To quantfy the extent to whch the bases we have defned could be reduced wthout affectng the global contnuty propertes, we count the number of functons assocated wth codmenson 1 faces for each space consdered. For a polygon n D, the results are summarzed n Table 5.1. The k = 0 case s optmal n the sense that every bass functon λ contrbutes to the H 1 -contnuty n some way, meanng no bass reducton s avalable. In the k = 1 cases, the number of bass functons we construct s quadratc n the number of vertces, v, of the polygon, but the number assocated wth the boundary s only lnear n the number of edges, e. Snce e = v for a smple polygon, ths suggests a bass reducton procedure would be both relevant and useful; the descrpton of such a reducton wll be the focus of a future work. In the k = cases, our procedure constructs O(v 3 ) bass functons but no nter-element contnuty s requred; n these cases, a dscontnuous Galerkn or other type of fnte element method would be more practcal. For a polyhedron m n 3D, the results are summarzed n Table 5.. As n D, the bass for the k = 0 case cannot be reduced whle the bases for the k = n cases would not be practcal for mplementaton snce no nter-element contnuty s requred. In the k = 1 cases, the number of bass functons we construct s agan quadratc n v, whle the number of bass functons requred for contnuty can be reduced for non-smplcal polyhedra. For nstance, f m s a hexahedron, our constructon for P 1 Λ 1 gves 56 functons but only 48 are relevant to contnuty; n the P1 Λ1 case, we construct 8 functons but only 0 are relevant to contnuty. In the k = cases, a smlar reducton s possble for non-smplcal polyhedra. Agan n the case of a hexahedron, we construct 168 functons for P 1 Λ 1 and 56 functons for P1 Λ1, but the elements requre only 7 and 4 functons, respectvely, for nter-element contnuty. 14
Current and future drectons. It remans to dscover addtonal propertes of Whtney-lke bass functons bult from generalzed barycentrc coordnates and ther use n fnte element methods.
