1 TEACHER CHECKLIST 5. Your Deposit If your group is purchasing lunches from the Smart Café or seeing an IMAX film, please make sure your deposit of $2 per lunch and/or $2 per ticket reserved is at McWane Science Center one week prior to your visit. If your school does not permit pre-paid deposits, please return a signed copy of the confirmation letter in lieu of deposit. Deposits may be mailed to th Street North, Birmingham, AL 35203, or the form faxed to Lunch Plans Whether you are bringing your lunch or ordering $5.00 group lunches from the Smart Café, you MUST make a reservation in advance. All groups are allotted 20 minutes to eat and reservations are set up every half hour from 10:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. Contact reservation specialists for a reserved lunch time or reservations@mcwane.org. Bringing your lunch Box and label your lunches for easier distribution. Bring one cooler, if possible, for your non-carbonated beverages. Your group will be responsible for placing your lunches in pre-labeled bins available upon your arrival Line up at the lunchrooms 5 minutes prior to your scheduled time. Order your lunch (separate charge): Fill out and fax your Smart Café Menu at least one week prior to your visit (Fax: or to reservations@mcwane.org) Select only one option for your entire group Make sure a $2 per lunch deposit or signed confirmation letter is at McWane Science Center at least one week prior to your visit. (200 19th Street North, Birmingham, AL 35203; Fax: ; reservations@mcwane.org) Line up at lunch rooms 5 minutes prior to your scheduled time. 3. Get Ready Please keep these things in mind when you re preparing for your trip. Carbonated beverages or commercially prepared foods will not be allowed into McWane Science Center. McWane Science Center is a gum free environment. Backpacks will only be allowed if carried by an adult. Due to space limitations, please discourage students from bringing individual coolers. McWane Science Center is not responsible for lost or stolen items. IMAX films may sell out without notice. If any adults choose to come with the group, but have not been added to your reservation, please stress to them that they may not be able to attend the IMAX film with the group. Please contact our reservations specialists to confirm your attendance numbers at least one week prior to your arrival: (205) or reservations@mcwane.org For grades K-6, you need one adult for every six students. For middle school (6-8), you need one adult for every eight students. For high school (9-12), you need one adult for every ten students. For all ages, maximum adult-to-student ratio: 1 adult for every 2 students. Any adults on your reservation over this ratio will be charged regular group rates, not chaperone rates. 2. Get set! Parking at McWane Science Center Arriving by Bus Please put the name of the school in the window of the bus. All buses should unload students at the 2nd Avenue North unloading area. One adult should check entire group in at visitor counter All other visitors should stay on the bus until a McWane Science Center staff member has greeted them. Buses park for free in a remote lot and bus drivers will be driven back to McWane Science Center by shuttle. Arriving by Car All cars should proceed directly to the parking deck on 2nd Avenue North. Please proceed to the Grand Lobby where a McWane Science Center staff member will greet you. It is $5.00 to park in the parking deck. Parking deck tokens may be purchased at the Ticket Counter. Parking is not included in any ticket charge or group reservation 1. Go! Before you get on the bus, please do these two things: How many people do you have? (These numbers will be used to check-in your group.) Students Teacher Chaperones Hand out the Chaperone Checklist (attached).

3 PARKING GENERAL INFORMATION McWane Science Center is located in the heart of downtown Birmingham. McWane Science Center is easily accessible from Interstate 65, Interstate 59/20, Highway 31, and Highway 280. FROM MONTGOMERY/ HOOVER: Take I-65 North to exit 260-B. Follow 3rd Avenue North to 19th Street North. Turn right. McWane Science Center is located on the corner of 2nd Avenue North and 19th Street North. FROM HUNTSVILLE/ GARDENDALE: Take I-65 South to exit 260. Turn left at 4th traffic signal. Follow 3rd Avenue North to 19th Street North. Turn right, McWane Science Center is located at the corner of 2nd Avenue North and 19th Street North. FROM CHATTANOOGA/GADSDEN: Take I-59/20 South/West to exit 125-B. Turn left. Follow 22nd Street North to 2nd Avenue North. Turn right, McWane Science Center is located at the corner of 2nd Avenue North and 19th Street North. FROM TUSCALOOSA/BESSEMER: Take I-59/20 North/East. Exit on 17th Street North to 3rd Avenue North. Turn left onto 3rd Avenue North. Turn right onto 19th Street North. McWane Science Center will be on your right at the corner of 19th Street North and 2nd Avenue North. FROM AUBURN/INVERNESS: Take Hwy 31/280 to the 2nd Ave. North exit. Follow 2nd Ave. North. McWane Science Center is located at the corner of 2nd Avenue North and 19th Street North. BUS DRIVERS: Please pull into the unloading zone on 2nd Ave to unload your buses. If there are many buses, the secondary unloading zone is on 19th Street. Please wait for a staff member to direct you to parking. If there is no space available in either unloading zone, please do not double park to unload. Circle the block until a space becomes available or a staff member otherwise directs you. 4 Inside the museum Inside the museum, four floors of interactive exhibits celebrate science and wonder. The first step in planning your memorable field trip adventure is learning about the exhibits you ll experience in the museum. Below is a brief overview of what is inside McWane Science Center. You can also learn more about every exhibit online at Lower Level Ocean Journey River Journey Shark & Ray Touch Tank Explore the aquarium that features over fifty species of marine life in a wide variety of salt and fresh water tanks. Highlights of Alabama s largest aquarium include the popular Shark and Ray Touch Tank, an octopus, jellyfish, and a variety of fresh water fish. ENHANCE YOUR FIELD TRIP OCEAN JOURNEY Create a fun field trip package with a showing of The Last Reef in IMAX or reserve a Life Science Program for your class. Level One Science Quest Rushton Theater Just Mice Size Bubble Room Demonstration Station Protozone Your students can lie on a Bed of Nails, test out the pulley chairs, experiment with bubbles and interact with dozens of other exhibits inside the museum adventure halls. Young guests can also explore the Just Mice Size exhibit designed for children kindergarten and younger. Several live science demonstration areas are also on this level. 5 Level Two Alabama Dinosaurs NatureScope Ice Age Alabama Exhibit High Cycle NOAA Science on a Sphere Take a walk through Alabama s natural history on the second floor of the museum. This is where you ll find the Alabama Dinosaur exhibit featuring rare finds from the Alabama tyrannosaur to dangerous raptors. Your class can also meet the faces and fins that swam in Alabama s oceans 80 million years ago in the Sea Monsters of Alabama exhibit that includes a giant sea turtle and the great prehistoric predator, the Mosasaur. ALABAMA DINOSAURS ENHANCE YOUR FIELD TRIP: Create a Natural History package when you plan to see Titans of the Ice Age in IMAX during your visit or reserve a Natural History Program for your class. Your group can also take a walk on the wild side in the NatureScope exhibit that is home to the Birmingham Audubon Society office and interactive nature exhibits about birds and bugs. SEA MONSTERS ENHANCE YOUR FIELD TRIP: Reserve one of the Audubon programs. Before you head on to explore the rest of the museum, be sure to take a ride on the daring High Cycle as you defy gravity by riding a bike across a high-wire two stories above the ground! NATURESCOPE HIGH CYCLE SCIENCE ON A SPHERE ICE AGE ALABAMA EXHIBIT PRESENTED BY LINN-HENLEY CHARITABLE TRUST Level Three Art & Technology Seasonal Exhibit Space Imagination Playground Classrooms On the third floor you will discover exciting interactive exhibits about Art & Technology. Classes can also construct anything they can dream up in the Imagination Playground. The third floor is a location for seasonal exhibits including our popular exhibit Winter Wonderland (November 23, 2012 January 6, 2013) that features a snow room, slide and a giant collection of model trains. BUTTERFLY WALL ENHANCE YOUR FIELD TRIP: Create a holiday package when you plan to see Rocky Mountain Express in IMAX during your visit. 3
