1 INTRODUCTION Using Application and WorksheetFunction objects Excel provides a large number of built-in functions that can be used to perform specific calculations or to return information about your spreadsheet data. These functions are organized into categories (text, logical, math, etc.) to help you locate the function you need from the Excel menu. In week 3, we learned how to use the functions: Sum SumIf Count CountIf CountBlank CountA Round Average AverageIf Min Small Max Large. Here is an example to remind you with the most important functions. VBA on the other side, offers a decent assortment of built-in functions too, but you might not always find exactly what you need. Fortunately, you can use most of Excel s worksheet functions (the one above and more) in your VBA procedures. The only worksheet functions that you cannot use are those that have an equivalent VBA

2 function. For example, you can t use Excel s RAND function (which generates a random number) because VBA has an equivalent function: Rnd. VBA makes Excel s worksheet functions available through the Application object or the WorksheetFunction object, which is contained in the Application object. As you can notice from these function, they are working on a group of values and not only single value. Therefore, you need to work on Range. Here s the general syntax of using the functions provided by the Application and WorksheetFunction objects. General syntax VaraibleName = Application.FunctionName(RangeVaraible) OR VaraibleName = WorksheetFunction.FunctionName(RangeVaraible) OR VaraibleName = Application.WorksheetFunction.FunctionName(RangeVaraible) There is a dot (.) between the Application and FunctionName, and also between the WorksheetFunction and FunctionName and between Application and WorksheetFunction. EXAMPLE OF USING APPLICATION AND WORKSHEETFUNCTION Let s suppose that we have the following data in Excel sheet.
