1 Plymouth Canton al Park Course Syllabus Course Name: Introduction to Computer Programming Course Number: Course Description: 0.5 Credits (1 semester course) This course teaches students algorithm design, problem solving, and applied mathematics through the use of the C++ programming language. The students will be introduced to all of the following essential components of programming: variables, arithmetic, conditional structures, iterative structures, subroutines, input/output, data structures, and object oriented programming. The C++ language and associated technology will be used due to its common use in professional practice and it s similarity to other high-level languages such as Python and Java. In addition to the technical aspects of programming, the course will cover such topics as ethical use of computing technology, binary representation of information, the Von Neumann architecture, compilers, integrated development environments, debuggers, grammars and the history of computer science. Course Design: Computer Science is the study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation, and of practical techniques for their implementation and application in computer systems. In Introduction to Computer Programming we will focus on five major themes: social responsibility with technology, hardware/software relationships, program implementation, and procedural programming and algorithms. This course is designed to introduce you to the basics of computer science and algorithm development using tools that engage your creative instincts. My personal desire for this class is to see you develop your analytical skills, and to enjoy the potential of using computers as a tool for solving problems. The programs will be written using the C++ programming language and the Code::Blocks development environment. Each project will build off of the previous components we have completed in class so it is vital that you stay on top of things. A large part of class time is spent at the computer working on developing algorithms and writing code. Assignments are used both to introduce and reinforce concepts and to give the students practice in designing programs and learning the basic concepts of a computer language. 2 Plymouth Canton al Park Course Materials/Resources: Textbook: Software: Technology: The textbook will mostly be used as a supplement in this course we will mostly be using notes sheets. The name of the book for this course is titled C++ for You++ by Litvin and Litvin. I will provide notes and tutorials to help you learn to program with C++, and there are online resources that we will reference when needed. Before exams and quizzes, we will provide reviews to help you prepare. We have a classroom set of textbooks, but students who wish to check one out may do so. o Code::Blocks development environment o SDL Library The classroom has a set of HP desktop computers which will be equipped with Code::Blocks IDE, Google Chrome, Paint.net, Allegro Library, and SDL Library. This course counts towards your online learning experience here at PCEP. Many universities and most high schools use tools to allow students to extend their learning beyond the set classroom schedule, and we will do the same for this course. Each student will be given the option of using a classroom flash drive. The flash drive must be returned at the end of the semester. If lost/damaged, the student must pay $5.00 to the school for a replacement. The student does not have to borrow one if they do not want to. The two major tools we will use to address the requirements of an online learning environment course are: Google Platform: In this course you will be asked to amass all your work in one location. This will allow you to better reflect on your personal progress and will improve our ability to collaborate amongst each other. The Google platform (including Gmail and Google Drive) has been adopted by the district this school year. Google Drive allows you to store your assignments in a cloud computing environment, meaning that it is available to you wherever you have access to the Internet and a web browser. I will be creating a folder for each of you, and we will share this space during the semester. Communication tools exist so that all the work that is stored in the folder can be collaborated on if necessary. It should be noted that the service is free to all students. 6 Plymouth Canton al Park Course Requirements: Students in this class will be required to do the following things: 1. Students should come to class prepared every day with a writing implement and a 3-ring binder. Ideally, all course materials would be provided electronically, but there will be weekly printed notes, as well as other handouts. Students should be dating their notes, homework, quizzes and tests and organizing these items so they are easily accessible for future reference. 2. Students will be required to make the best use of class time in order to keep pace with the curriculum. 3. Students will be required to have submitted a signed Acceptable Use Policy form before accessing the computers. (This would have been done at initial registration.) Grading Scale: A+ 100% A 93-99% A % B % B 83-86% B % C % C 73-76% C % D % D 63-66% D % E 59 & below Grading System: All assignments are given points or checked off. Each card marking, points are added. Your grade is based on the percentage you earned from the total possible points. Loss of points: Assignments not completed, incomplete, lacking neatness, or labeled improperly. Also, wasting class time, or displaying unprofessional conduct will result in loss of points. Documents or presentations which contain improper or inappropriate items will be given a 0 grade. Grades will be based on weighted averages in the following areas: Projects and Practices: 45% The bulk of this course is developing skills through programming assignments and projects. These will cover a variety of subjects but will include a significant amount of mathematics. All assignments will be able to be completed in class. Tests/Quizzes: 35% I will give quizzes on an approximate bi-weekly basis. They will cover concepts developed in the programming projects and reviews done in class. Final Project/Final Exam: 20% There will be a culminating final project/presentation at the end of the semester. This will take approximately 4 weeks to complete. 9 Plymouth Canton al Park Course Policies & Expectations Late Work: (work turned in after determined / assigned due date): Late work is accepted, but it is expected that you will make up this work outside of class time and will commit to keeping pace with the new material as it is presented. Tests/Quizzes must be taken the day they are assigned (or immediately upon returning from excused absence, at before/after school or at lunch) Make-up: It is the student s responsibility to get any make up work missed due to an excused absence. I will not seek out students to give them assignments or remind them of due dates. Class Rules 1. You may use the Internet for educational purposes only. You may not download anything without permission from the instructor. No games of any kind are allowed. 2. Students are expected to operate the computer equipment properly. Damage due to equipment misuse may result in loss of computer privileges, or even withdrawal from the class. A student s unauthorized use of the network will be handled by administration. 3. If you are frequently disrespectful of the given class time to complete work on the computer, you will be removed from the machine. The amount of time you are pulled from the machines will depend on how often you are found in violation of lab rules. 4. Sharing work or copying another student s assignment is considered cheating. If a student is caught cheating, the school policy will be enforced. 5. Beverages, food, and candy are not allowed in the lab. 6. Permanent seats will be assigned. Students must sit in these seats unless otherwise instructed. 7. Respect and courtesy must be displayed to fellow students and staff at all times. 8. Use of the hall pass for specific destinations will be permitted at the teacher s discretion. A student who goes elsewhere is considered absent (unexcused) and cannot use the pass for the remainder of the semester. Only one student will be allowed to leave the lab at any time. 10 Plymouth Canton al Park Dear Families, Message to Families My name is Heather Duff and I will be your student s computer programming teacher this semester at Canton High School. This is my eleventh year teaching after a career as an Accountant, and my seventh year at Canton. I am a graduate of and have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to come back home. I strive to help our students to develop their computer programming abilities and problem solving skills, and to work with them to improve their selfconfidence. I know that we will have a great time learning computer programming this semester. Although the students will be learning how to program using C++, this program is just a tool for the students to work at a higher level of thinking in order to problem-solve and use logical thinking skills. The students do learn commands that deal with output including algorithms, math problems, loops, and graphics, however they also learn how to use problem-solving skills to figure out how to achieve these desired outputs. I believe strongly that your child will have a successful school year if we can communicate on a regular basis. Please read the course syllabus and fill out the information below. 11 Plymouth Canton al Park What you can do to help your child succeed 1. Ask your student when the next quiz or test is. The day before the quiz, ask if they need any help or how they plan on studying. A day or two after the quiz, ask them how they ve done. If you aren t getting information from them, there may be a problem. 2. Your student will be using software to help develop programs, and all of this can be obtained for free and downloaded from the web. The students can arrange to come work in the classroom outside of class time, but the students may like to work at home as well. If you can do this, please ask to see their work and ask about their assignments. 3. If you and your student aren t content with a grade or level of understanding at any point in the class, contact me. I stress to the students that improving their grade cannot happen overnight (i.e. waiting until the very end of the quarter or semester). If we can communicate, we can help to make the necessary improvements and changes. 4. Be positive! Your student needs you to encourage them. I find many of the students that I work with in computer programming and coding have convinced themselves that they are incapable of success. You and I can encourage them to keep trying and to not let small setbacks consume them. 5. Stay in touch with me. I will check my regularly throughout the day, so this is the best method to get a hold of me. What I think is important for your child to succeed 1. Practice, practice, practice. I try not to overwhelm the students by assigning big projects until they ve had the opportunity to develop the skills required. That being said, the more you practice any skill, the easier it will be to repeat it when asked and the easier future concepts will be that build off that skill. 2. Becoming a good problem solver requires a lot of effort. It helps to write out the steps of the algorithm first and keep notes within the program as you start to code. It also helps to work on expressing ideas clearly and exactly. Programming can be frustrating, but will do wonders for the conceptualization of challenging ideas as your student works towards college and professional work. 3. Help is available.
