7 Branch Events Events coordinator: Jeremy White The 2012/13 programme comprised 15 events, including Annual Business Lecture: The impact of new technology and new media on the democratic process with Peter Black, AM The Bloodhound SSC The 1000mph car with Prof Hassan & Dr Evans, Swansea university Annual Christmas Family Event: From Silent Night to Slade: Christmas tunes transformed by technology with Wendy Sadler, Science Made Simple. Professional Development Series, with John Mayne, Managing Director of Palladium We worked with the IET, IT Wales, Software Alliance Wales, Swansea University, and other BCS Branches & SGs to deliver joint events We'd like to thank everyone who helped including our presenters, collaborators and hosts

9 Branch Membership The 2012/13 membership 2011/ members in our area Current membership 1686 (as of end August 2013) BCS members can belong to up to 3 branches Low event turnout - greater response to national and Xmas events The 2013/14 membership plan Welcome to branch members Follow-up - personalised invitation s for new members first event. Issues include: Small number of membership attend events Raising awareness of branch and events to non-members Attracting new members.
10 BCS Member Groups Convention Two conventions per year in London, for representatives from all branches These enable us to - promote our branch and remind HQ that South Wales isn't far away - link up with other branches - hear the views, problems and solutions of other branches - understand the way BCS is changing - Put our views, sometimes quite firmly, to HQ staff Focus of last convention (Spring 2013): Engagement with Students and Young Professionals, including - Challenge IT: engaging with the community and schools to promote IT by Coventry Branch - PhD student Doctoral Consortium organised by London Central Branch - Employability of Young Professionals in a Recession, Quality Specialist Group with Hampshire branch (and others)

14 BCS Mid-Wales Representative: Fred Long, Chair BCS Mid-Wales During the Branch: presented a Turing Centenary Event involving four short talks and some short scenes from Catrin Huws play To Kill a Machine ; held three talks; organised two Show and Tell events; ran a pub quiz, jointly with BCSWomen & Aberystwyth University s Department of Computer Science; visited the National Plant Phenomics Centre at Plas Gogerddan near Aberystwyth; sponsored an Android programming family fun day, jointly with Ysgol Bro Ddyfi & BCS Women. On 21 st October 2013 in Aberystwyth, the BCS Mid-Wales is holding its AGM followed by a series of short talks on Happy 100th birthday Maurice Wilkes: an overdue testimonial
