Welcome, Introductions and Agenda Overview Rino Marinelli welcomed everyone to the meeting and reminded everyone that the meeting would be operating in strict compliance with CompTIA s antitrust policy. The agenda and purpose of the meeting were reviewed and opened for discussion. Agenda: Open, Welcome & Introductions Big Data trends and future outlook Understanding the Internet of Things Advancing Women in IT (AWIT) - Dream IT Canada s Political and Public Policy Environment You re Hired! Recruiting the Right IT Talent Social Media in the Workplace CompTIA Canadian IT Business Community 2014 Charitable Donation Recipient Misc. & Wrap-Up Mr. Marinelli introduced Bryan L Esperance, Denise Woods-Goldstein and Robert Cosentino as the other CompTIA employee present at the meeting. Mr. Marinelli called on both Kevin Hiebert (Chair) and Doug Brown (Vice Chair) who both introduced themselves and welcomed all participants to the meeting. The attendees were all asked to introduce themselves also. For the numerous first time attendees present (15), Mr. Marinelli proceeded to provide a high level overview of CompTIA. Following this, Doug Brown provided an overview of the community rebrand activities and a demonstration of the new website (that was currently in Beta at the time). Kevin Hiebert continued to provide community updates by discussing the status of community initiatives, charitable donations and concluded with an update on upcoming community events.
3 II. Big Data trends and future outlook Mr. Marinelli introduced Les King, Director Databases, Analytics & Big Data Solutions, IBM who provided this presentation. In his presentation, Mr. King discussed the future of cognitive analytics, the different big data paradigms and discussed the pros and cons of a single consolidated data warehouse approach to analytics. The presentation continued with a discussion that focused on the next generation architecture for big data, along with the big data analytics platform. Mr. King continued to discuss other topics related to the theme of big data including the logical data warehouse, the concepts of Not Only SQL and BigSQL, the future of the logical data warehouse and provided multiple real life examples of these concepts in practice. III. Understanding the Internet of Things Mr. Marinelli introduced Alec Saunders, VP QNX Cloud, QNX Software (BlackBerry) who provided his presentation on the Internet of Things (IoT). Mr. Saunders started his presentation by providing an historical perspective and an evolution to customer centric IoT. He provided some current day examples of everyday items taking advantage of this current IT trend. The presentation continued with a focus on the future economic impact of IoT, and how IoT helps make real time decision making a reality. Mr. Saunders concluded his presentation with a discussion that focused on Project ION, and provided multiple scenarios of how the IoT can greatly improve efficiencies and real time decision making in these following examples: 1) Improve maintenance and performance of IT environments including hardware within networks 2) Optimize supply chain management 3) Optimize customer relationship management 4) Enhancing the customer experience IV. CompTIA: Advancing Women in IT (AWIT) - Dream IT Mr. Marinelli introduced Jean Mork Bredeson, President, Service 800 and Kevin Hiebert, Consultant, The Print Package who jointly provided a presentation on the Dream IT initiative which originated from CompTIA s Advancing Women in IT (AWIT) community. Ms. Bredeson started the presentation with an overview of the AWIT community along with a high level description of the Dream IT initiative.
4 Mr. Hiebert continued the presentation by describing the initiative in deeper details and demonstrated the various resources and tools that are available to promote this initiative across the attendees personal and professional networks. This presentation also included real life women in IT stories followed by a call to action to volunteer for the Dream IT initiative. Lunch & Networking Session During lunch, Jean Mork Bredeson provided a status update of CompTIA s ServiceMetric service quality and customer satisfaction benchmarking program. This program is available exclusively to CompTIA members and provided by Service 800. V. Canada s Political and Public Policy Environment Following the lunch and networking session, Mr. Marinelli introduced Alan Young, Co-President, TACTIX. In his presentation, Mr. Young provided an overview of the current political and public policy environment and the impact on Government IT spending. A political recap and state of the political climate was provided to the audience. Mr. Young continued to discuss the current IT issues within the Federal Government. The discussion focused on certain IT issues that included: 1) Digital Canada 150 2) Canada Anti-Spam Legislation 3) Bill C-8 regarding counterfeit goods 4) Cyberbullying Legislation with respect to Telcos and ISPs 5) Digital Privacy Act 6) Canadian Cloud First initiative Mr. Young concluded his presentation with a high level summary describing the state of future IT government spending and areas of interest for those who sell IT goods and services to the federal government. VI. You re Hired! Recruiting the Right IT Talent Mr. Marinelli introduced John Mehrmann, CEO, Brainhunter who provided a presentation on the best practices of recruiting, hiring and retaining IT talent. Mr. Mehrmann provided an overview of the hiring process in a four step process. The first step, as presented included identifying the corporate needs. A clear outline of your organization, culture and requirements is a crucial first step. The presentation continued with the second step of finding and recruiting the right people. This section also focused on hiring for the millennial generation.
5 Mr. Mehrmann concluded the presentation with the third and fourth steps in the process, mainly assessing skills and on-boarding/training. VII. Social Media in the Workplace Mr. Marinelli introduced Tamara Vorobeitchik, Global Talent Management, Celestica who provided a presentation on driving collaboration through technology and social media. In her presentation, Ms. Vorobeitchik discussed the theme that social media is not about technology but rather people. She continued to discuss social media facts and trends. Her presentation continued to analyze social media in the corporate environment with a specific focus on the millennial generation. The presentation continued to present topics including social media as a competitive advantage, social media etiquette including do s and don ts. Ms. Vorobeitchik concluded her presentation with a case study and examples of how Celestica is incorporating Social Media internally within their corporate processes including the adoption of the Google platform. VIII. CompTIA Canadian IT Business Community 2014 Charitable Donation Recipient Mr. Marinelli introduced the first recipient of our community s charitable donation, Paul Gillespie, President and CEO of KINSA. Mr. Gillespie provided an overview of KINSA and provided an overview to the members of how the donated funds were going to be allocated. Kevin Hiebert and Doug Brown presented Mr. Gillespie a cheque for $5,000. Mr. Marinelli introduced the second recipient of our community s charitable donation, Julian Nadeau, Founder, Code For Kids. Mr. Nadeau provided an overview of Code For Kids and also provided an overview to members describing how the charitable funds were going to be allocated. Kevin Hiebert and Doug Brown presented Mr. Nadeau with a cheque for $5,000. IX. Miscellaneous & Wrap-Up Mr. Marinelli announced the fall ITSS community meeting in Philadelphia on October 21-22, 2014 and encouraged all attendees, if at all possible, to attend and promote the event with their colleagues south of the border who may be interested in attending. Mr. Marinelli reminded members to submit a post meeting survey and provided an open call for nominations for the 2015 Canadian community Executive Council. Thanks were given to participants for attending the meeting and to the participating Executive Council Members. The meeting was then adjourned.
