1 Software Announcement October 15, 2002 IBM WebSphere Everyplace Connection Manager V4.2 Enables You to Extend Applications to Wireless Devices Over Multiple Networks Overview WECM V4.2 allows enterprises to extend existing applications to mobile workers over many different wireless networks. WECM also allows service providers to provide multiple solutions to their customers. WECM V4.2 renames and reprices IBM Everyplace Wireless Gateway V2.1. These actions simplify the pricing structure and help to more closely align this product with other offerings in the WebSphere Everyplace family of products. WECM V4.2 is functionally the same as Everyplace Wireless Gateway V2.1. Refer to the Statement of Direction in this announcement for information about planned enhancements for WECM. WECM V4.2 is a distributed, scalable, multipurpose UNIX communications platform that supports highly secure data access by both Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and non-wap clients over a wide range of international wireless network technologies, as well as LAN and WAN wireline networks. It integrates the WAP V1.2.1 standard support as defined by the WAP Forum together with award-winning IBM wireless technology for supporting standard Internet Protocols (IP) efficiently and securely over both IP and non-ip wireless bearer networks. WECM V4.2 includes a Secure Remote Access stack, Short Messaging Service (SMS), and a WAP stack. It integrates the supported international networks within a single UNIX gateway. Its ability to connect radio networks to wireline networks means that all supported devices, whether they be mobile or static, can access the network and applications via the same wireless gateway, regardless of the cellular or radio network. Users with different application needs (based on transmission costs, coverage, or devices) can select the best wireless network for their situation. Mobile users can use wired networks as well, such as an ISP connection or an Ethernet in a hotel room, and have highly secure access through the gateway to their applications. 2 Description WebSphere Everyplace Connection Manager (WECM) V4.2 replaces and reprices IBM Everyplace Wireless Gateway V2.1. WECM V4.2 is functionally the same as Everyplace Wireless Gateway V2.1. Refer to the Statement of Direction in this announcement for information about future releases of WECM. WECM V4.2 provides a standard communications interface (TCP/IP) to a variety of wireless, dial-up, and LANs with data optimization and security. The wireless client component of WECM provides an optimized and secure IP tunnel for communication through a variety of wireless and wireline networks. WECM V4.2 supports multiple platforms, including: IBM AIX V4.3.3 or V5.1 Solaris V7 or V8 Windows XP, Windows CE (Handheld PC Professional, Handheld PC 2000, Pocket PC 2000, and Pocket PC 2002) Windows ME and embedded QNX/Neutrino Palm OS 3.5 or 4.0 Clients using Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, or XP The key components of WECM V4.2 are the Wireless Gateway, the Wireless Gatekeeper, and the Wireless Client. Wireless Gateway The Wireless Gateway component of WECM V4.2 integrates data access from wireless and wireline networks so that applications and data can be made available to mobile users. Existing application programs using a TCP/IP interface may use either wireless networks or wireline networks. Using TCP/IP integrates communication under a common interface layer that shields network-specific details from the user application and provides network-specific enhancements such as data compression, data encryption, data optimization, and authentication. Functions that address the mobile and wireless environment include: Network-specific enhancements such as IP tunneling through non-ip wireless networks Header reduction IP data compression and filtering Data encryption for privacy Bi-directional authentication of both the client and the gateway TCP protocol optimization for network latency Dynamic connection suspend/resume for reducing connect time charges and recovery from inadvertently dropped connections A rich set of diagnostic, logging, accounting and management functions WECM supports a wide range of wireless and wireline networks, including cellular, public and private packet radio networks, satellite networks, internet connections, dial and LAN connections. When the Wireless Gateway is configured as a WAP gateway, it performs a protocol conversion to provide communication with WAP clients and HTTP Web servers. The WAP gateway listens for data and messages arriving from WAP clients and translates the Wireless Session Protocol (WSP) requests into HTTP requests that are forwarded to an HTTP proxy. The response headers are converted from HTTP into Wireless Session Protocol (WSP) response headers and the content is encoded from WML or WMLScript into binary XML (wbxml) and forwarded to the WAP client. The WAP gateway support includes: Compliance with the WAP V1.2.1 standard, as defined by the WAP Forum including the push proxy gateway capabilities. Persistent storage of cookies on behalf of WAP clients. Security features based on the WAP Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS) protocol between WAP clients and the WAP gateway. WTLS Class 1 and Class 2 levels are supported. A choice of encryption algorithms and key strengths for both key exchange and bulk encryption methods. Secure HTTP (HTTPS) requests to Web servers using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) made on behalf of WAP clients, and a choice of encryption algorithms and key strengths for both key exchange and bulk encryption methods. WAP user authentication integrated with a third party RADIUS server. Integrates with third-party Network Access Servers such as Cisco to provide user and phone number identification to the gateway and upstream Web applications. Interfaces to IP-capable networks such as Cellular Circuit-Switched Data and IP Packet based networks, as well as SMS network types, for example, SMS-SMPP and SMS-UCP. Network Management of WAP Gateway via Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) standards. Accounting records are stored in a ODBC relational database allowing external applications easy access to billing data. The Wireless Gateway in WECM V4.2 can be configured to be a principal or subordinate node in a cluster of Wireless Gateways. In this manner the Wireless Gateway distributes and services communication requests and provides load-balancing efficiency. You When the Wireless Gateway is configured to be a messaging gateway, it enables a Web application server to send messages to a client, such as a pager or a phone in a wireless network. In a WAP network, the messaging gateway is a push proxy gateway (PPG). The messaging gateway supports several types of message modes: SMS, short message delivery over proprietary networks, WAP push, , and simple network paging protocol (SNPP). Examples of message operations include news, stock quotes, pager messages, broadcast messages, and notification of events such as arrival. Wireless Gatekeeper The Wireless Gatekeeper component of WECM V4.2 is an easy-to-use administrative interface that enables you to remotely define and manage any number of WECM Wireless Gateways from a variety of platforms, such as AIX, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows XP, Linux, and Solaris. The Wireless Gatekeeper can help you to securely configure wireless gateways, register users and mobile devices, specify logging and tracing controls, and perform other administrative tasks. The administration and configuration data is stored in a centrally configured LDAP directory. Multiple Wireless Gatekeepers can be defined to flexibly distribute administrative permissions

3 and responsibilities. If you use the Wireless Gateway exclusively to support WAP clients, you can configure the Wireless Gatekeeper to display only WAP-related resources, thereby simplifying the administration process. Wireless Client The Wireless Client in WECM is software that runs locally on mobile devices. The Wireless Client code: Enables the interface to the wireless/wireline modems or adapters Optimizes with security the applications IP data communications Implements dynamic connection suspend/resume Provides a full function interface for starting and stopping communication with Wireless Gateway After the authenticated network connection to the Gateway is made, the Gateway assigns the client IP address (intranet or Internet) and via the Wireless Client, the IP applications on the mobile device can run wirelessly using the standard TCP/IP provided by the operating system on the mobile device. The functionality offered by the Wireless Client, in conjunction with the Wireless Gateway, enables improved performance and security. Since the Wireless Client is positioned below TCP/IP, network-specific details can be shielded from view inside a common interface layer. To the end user or application developer, or administrator, a radio network becomes just another network that does not require any specialized communication protocols or programming. Standard IP routing is supported, even over non-ip wireless bearer networks, permitting unbroken, end-to-end TCP sessions between applications on the mobile device and the application servers in the enterprise network. The Wireless Client is supported for use on devices running Windows CE Handheld PC Pro, Windows CE Handheld PC 2000, Windows CE Pocket PC 2002, Palm OS 3.5 and 4.0, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows ME, and Windows XP. Support for WAP Gateway The Wireless Gateway, when configured as a WAP Gateway, provides connectivity for multi-vendor WAP 1.1 and WAP 1.2 client devices. WAP cell phones and WAP PDAs can connect to the WECM Wireless Gateway using a WAP microbrowser. The Wireless Gateway fully supports the WAP Wireless Session Protocol (WSP) to link the WAP microbrowser with connection-oriented and connectionless, security-enriched and non-secure, WAP services. Support for Standard PPP clients Another broad category of mobile client connectivity that is supported by WECM V4.2 is comprised of devices that can establish a Point to Point Protocol (PPP) connection to the gateway as the Network Access Server. For this PPP client support, no Wireless Client software needs to be present on the mobile device. With PPP connections, performance optimization is much less and security functionality is restricted to authentication (no encryption). With PPP connections, you will not receive the benefits of the Wireless Client such as data optimization. Replacement for Everyplace Wireless Gateway WebSphere Everyplace Connection Manager is a replacement product for Everyplace Wireless Gateway V2.1. Customers who have Everyplace Wireless Gateway installed and whose Passport Advantage coverage period is still valid are eligible to receive WECM for no additional charge, according to the terms of their Passport Agreement. The Everyplace Wireless Gateway user licenses of each eligible customer will be converted to a quantity of WECM processor licenses equal to the number of processors on which Everyplace Wireless Gateway was installed. New customers should purchase WECM V4.2 in a quantity equal to the number of processors on which they plan to use WECM V4.2. Product Positioning WECM V4.2 extends the IBM Application Framework for e-business and allows customers to extend their existing applications to the mobile portion of their workforce, over many different wireless networks, in an optimized manner that promotes security. This lets enterprise customers, suppliers, and employees conduct business virtually anywhere, anytime. WECM can be used together with other products in the WebSphere Everyplace family to enable highly secure wireless access and e-business. 5 IBM US Announcement Supplemental Information October 15, 2002 Benefits Companies can efficiently and in a more secure manner extend their e-business IP networks and applications out to mobile devices over wireless and wireline networks. Companies can support multiple networks (both wired and wireless), which enables mobile users to use the network that meets their individual needs and cost objectives. WECM supports applications using industry-standard sockets programming interface, so users do not need to learn special programming interfaces or proprietary tools and protocols. In effect, TCP/IP applications can run unchanged with wireless networks. The comprehensive network access solution features bi-directional user and server authentication and data encryption for security. WECM data compression and header reduction helps enable faster response times and lower data volumes over the network. WECM automatically disconnects from connection-oriented dial networks during idle periods and reconnects for new data transmissions. This lowers connection fees and preserves a virtual connection when the physical connection is dropped accidentally or intentionally. WECM provides its own Java user interface that enables easy setup and configuration across multiple platforms.
