Pay particular attention to the accompanying manual "Safety Notes and Regulations" and ensure these safety notes are understood before using the product. Keep this manual and the manual "Safety Notes and Regulations" in a safe place for easy reference while using this product. Radio interference This product is a "Class A" ITE (Information Technology Equipment). In a domestic environment this product may cause radio interference, in which case the user may be required to take appropriate measures. VCCI-A Aluminum electrolytic capacitors The aluminum electrolytic capacitors used in the product's printed circuit board assemblies and in the mouse and keyboard are limited-life components. Use of these components beyond their operating life may result in electrolyte leakage or depletion, potentially causing emission of foul odor or smoke. As a guideline, in a normal office environment (25 C) operating life is not expected to be reached within the maintenance support period (5 years). However, operating life may be reached more quickly if, for example, the product is used in a hot environment. The customer shall bear the cost of replacing replaceable components which have exceeded their operating life. Note that these are only guidelines, and do not constitute a guarantee of trouble-free operation during the maintenance support period. High safety use This product has been designed and manufactured for general uses such as general office use, personal use, domestic use and normal industrial use. It has not been designed or manufactured for uses which demand an extremely high level of safety and carry a direct and serious risk to life or body if such safety cannot be ensured. 9 1 Introduction The PRIMERGY BX620 S6 dual server blade is an Intel-based server blade that was designed for operation in the PRIMERGY BX600 S3 basic unit. Up to ten BX620 S6 server blades can be installed in the basic unit and they use the same infrastructure as the predecessor model PRIMERGY BX620 S Documentation overview Concept and target groups This Service Supplement completes the information given in the Operating Manual and the Options Guide of the server blade. 11 2 Procedure V CAUTION! The actions described in this manual should only be performed by service personnel. First of all please familiarize yourself with the safety instructions in the chapter "Safety instructions" on page 13. Make sure that all the manuals you need (see service DVD) are available, printing out the PDF files if necessary. You will definitely need the operating manual for the basic unit. Shut down the server blade correctly, switch it off and remove it from the basic unit as described in the chapter "Replacing components" on page 17. Replace the defective component as described in the relevant chapter. Close the server blade. 13 3 Safety instructions I The following safety instructions are also provided in the manual "Safety Notes and Regulations". This device complies with the relevant safety regulations for data processing equipment. V CAUTION! The actions described in this manual should only be performed by service personnel. Before starting up V CAUTION! During installation and before operating the device, observe the instructions on environmental conditions for your device. If the device is brought in from a cold environment, condensation may form both inside and on the outside of the device. Wait until the device has acclimatized to room temperature and is absolutely dry before starting it up. Material damage may be caused to the device if this requirement is not observed. Transport the device only in the original packaging or in packaging that protects it from knocks and jolts. Installation and operation V CAUTION! Observe the notes on installation and operation in the operating manual of your respective basic unit. When installing the server blade in the basic unit, beware of the energy hazard at the midplane contacts. A short circuit on these contacts can damage the system. Data cables must be adequately shielded to avoid interference. BX620 S6 Service Supplement 13

14 Safety instructions The EN and EN /2 standards apply for LAN cabling. The minimum requirement is the use of a category 5 screened LAN cable for 10/100 Mbit/s Ethernet, or a category 5e cable for Gigabit Ethernet. The requirements of the specification ISO/IEC must also be taken into account. Route the cables in such a way that they do not form a potential hazard (tripping) and cannot be damaged. When connecting the device, refer to the relevant notes in the operating manual for the device. Do not connect or disconnect any data transmission cables during a thunderstorm (lightning hazard). Make sure that no objects (e.g. jewelry, paperclips etc.) or liquids get inside the unit (electric shock hazard, short circuit). In emergencies (e.g. damaged casing, control elements or power cables, penetration of liquids or foreign bodies), switch off the device immediately, unplug it from the grounded power outlets, and contact your customer service team. Proper operation of the system (in accordance with IEC 60950/DIN EN 60950) is only ensured if the casing is completely assembled and the rear covers for the installation openings have been put in place (electric shock, cooling, fire protection, interference suppression). Install only system extensions that satisfy the requirements and rules governing safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and telecommunications terminal equipment. If you install other extensions, you might damage the system or violate these safety regulations. You can find out which system extensions are suitable from the customer service center or your sales outlet. The components marked with a warning label (e.g. lightning symbol) may only be opened, removed or exchanged by authorized, qualified personnel. The hot-pluggable/hot-swappable components are exceptions to this rule. If you cause a defect on the device by installing or exchanging system extensions, the warranty will be invalidated. 14 Service Supplement BX620 S6

15 Safety instructions V CAUTION! Only set the resolutions and refresh rates specified in the operating manual for your monitor. Batteries V CAUTION! Otherwise, you may damage the monitor. If you are in any doubt, contact your sales outlet or customer service center. Incorrect replacement of batteries may lead to a risk of explosion. The batteries may only be replaced with identical batteries or with a type recommended by the manufacturer. Do not throw batteries into the trash can. Batteries must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations concerning special waste. Replace the lithium battery on the system board in accordance with the instructions in the service supplement for the server blade. All batteries containing pollutants are marked with a symbol (a crossed-out garbage can). In addition, the marking is provided with the chemical symbol of the heavy metal decisive for the classification as a pollutant: Cd Cadmium Hg Mercury Pb Lead BX620 S6 Service Supplement 15

16 Safety instructions Modules with Electrostatic-Sensitive Devices Modules with electrostatic-sensitive devices are identified by the following sticker: Figure 1: ESD label When you handle components fitted with ESDs, you must always observe the following points: Switch off the system and remove the power plugs from the power outlets before installing or removing components with ESDs. You must always discharge static build-up (e.g. by touching a grounded object) before working with such components. Any devices or tools that are used must be free of electrostatic charge. Wear a suitable grounding cable that connects you to the external chassis of the system unit. Always hold components with ESDs at the edges or at the points marked green (touch points). Do not touch any connectors or conduction paths on an ESD. Place all the components on a pad which is free of electrostatic charge. I For a detailed description of how to handle ESD components, see the relevant European or international standards (EN , ANSI/ESD S20.20). 16 Service Supplement BX620 S6

When handling systems and boards, make sure you observe the safety instructions in the chapter "Safety instructions" on page Preparation If you want to replace components which are not hot-pluggable, you must remove the server blade from the basic unit and open it. Exit all applications and shut down the server blade correctly. Press the On/Off button on the server blade control panel. BX620 S6 Service Supplement 17

20 Preparation Opening the server blade Figure 4: Removing the cover Press the two touch points (1) of the cover simultaneously to disengage it, and slide back the cover as far as it will go in the direction of the arrow (2). Take off the cover. The server blade components are now freely accessible. Closing the server blade To close the server blade, follow the instructions above in reverse order. 20 Service Supplement BX620 S6

21 Replacing the control panel board 4.2 Replacing the control panel board V CAUTION! Make sure you observe the safety notes in the chapter "Safety instructions" on page 13. The electronic elements of the control and connection panel of the server blade are located on a board that is connected to the system board of the server blade via a foil cable. Remove the control panel board from the server blade chassis. 23 Replacing processors 4.3 Replacing processors V CAUTION! Make sure you observe the safety notes in the chapter "Safety instructions" on page 13. You can install one or two processors in the PRIMERGY BX620 S6 server blade. V CAUTION! Always use processors of the same type. All processors must have the same frequency and cache size. For multi-processor mode use a suitable multi-processor operating system. Never touch the processor core. The thermal paste must be intact for mounting the processor. Never install a processor without a heat sink! The processor is likely to overheat, which may cause damage to the processor and the system board. Requirements The server blade has been removed from the basic unit. The cover of the server blade has been removed. BX620 S6 Service Supplement 23

V CAUTION! To avoid damaging the pins, do not force the processor into the socket. Never touch the underside of the processor. Even light contaminants, such as oil from human skin, can destroy the processor or impair its functionality. BX620 S6 Service Supplement 27

29 Replacing processors Installing the heat sink V CAUTION! Before installing the heat sink, check that the thermal paste is intact. If it is not, you must do the following before reinstalling the heat sink: Remove any remnants of the heat sink compound from the bottom of the heat sink and clean the top of the processor. Use a lint-free isopropyl alcohol wipe (e.g. CleanTex TexPad 801, available from specialist dealers). Apply a new film of heat sink compound to the bottom of the heat sink (half a pea-sized amount). Figure 13: Fastening the processor heat sink Place the heat sink carefully on the CPU. V CAUTION! Make sure that the heat sink is not tilted when it is installed to ensure a sufficient cooling of the processor. Fix the heat sink by fastening the four premounted screws in diagonally opposite sequence. BX620 S6 Service Supplement 29

30 Installing/removing the system board 4.4 Installing/removing the system board V CAUTION! Make sure you observe the safety notes in the chapter "Safety instructions" on page 13. Usually, the system board is not removed but replaced completely with the housing. You only need to remove it to replace the TPM. V CAUTION! Before replacing the system board, ask whether the customer uses the TPM functionality. If the customer uses the TPM functionality, proceed as follows: Requirements Ask the customer to make TPM backup copies. For security reasons, customers must also restore the TPM data themselves. Deactivate the TPM in the system BIOS (see Fujitsu Technology Solutions BIOS manual). Remove the TPM from the old system board and install it on the new board (for a description, see section "Replacing the TPM" on page 32). Once you have installed the new board, you must reactivate the TPM. Be careful not to delete the TPM data! (see Fujitsu Technology Solutions BIOS manual.) The server blade has been removed from the basic unit. The cover of the server blade has been removed. The hard disk modules are removed. The storage module has been removed. The cable to the control panel board has been removed. 30 Service Supplement BX620 S6

Lift the system board carefully out of the chassis and place it on an antistatic surface. Installing the system board To install the system board, follow the removal instructions in reverse order. 32 Replacing the TPM 4.5 Replacing the TPM V CAUTION! Make sure you observe the safety notes in the chapter "Safety instructions" on page 13. Requirements The server blade has been removed from the basic unit. The cover of the server blade has been removed. V Caution Advise the customer that he must provide you with TPM backup copies. For security reasons, the TPM must be restored/re-saved by the customer. If the customer DOES NOT have a backup copy available, inform him that replacing the TPM will cause him to lose all his data. Remove the system board as described in section "Installing/removing the system board" on page 30. Turn the system board so that the components face down and place it carefully on a smooth, antistatic surface. 33 Replacing the TPM Turn the TPM screw (see photo) with a fine screwdriver (e.g. watchmaker's screwdriver). V CAUTION! To undo the TPM screw, you must turn it to the right! If you turn it to the left, you may tear the thin metal bar and may not be able to remove the screw at all. Remove the defective TPM on the top. 34 Replacing the TPM 2 1 Figure 17: Installing the TPM Plug the new TPM onto the system board (1). Attach the TPM with the TPM screw (2). I Tighten the screw with a torque of 0.6 Nm. Install the system board and the components you have removed as described in section "Installing/removing the system board" on page 30. Close the server blade, reinsert it in the system unit and switch it on as described in section "Preparation" on page Service Supplement BX620 S6

35 Replacing the UFM 4.6 Replacing the UFM V CAUTION! Make sure you observe the safety notes in the chapter "Safety instructions" on page 13. The UFM can be used as an optional memory for software (e.g. VMware) or as a software dongle. Requirements The server blade has been removed from the basic unit. The cover of the server blade has been removed. Figure 18: Removing the UFM Press the top of the UFM spacer of the defective UFM (see arrow) together using a gripper. Pull the defective UFM out of its socket on the system board and remove it. The UFM spacer remains on the system board. BX620 S6 Service Supplement 35

37 Replacing the battery 4.7 Replacing the battery To allow permanent saving of the system information, a lithium battery is installed which supplies the CMOS memory with power. When the battery charge becomes too low, a corresponding error message is displayed. In this case, the lithium battery must be replaced. When you look at the server blade from the front, the CMOS battery is located at the right edge of the blade housing (see figure 20 on page 38). V CAUTION! Observe the safety notes and the information on handling batteries in section "Batteries" on page 15. Incorrect replacement of batteries can lead to risk of explosion. The batteries must be replaced with an identical battery or with a battery type recommended by the manufacturer. V CAUTION! Make sure you insert the battery the right way round. 38 Replacing the battery Figure 20: Replacing the CMOS battery Press the metal clip in the direction of the arrow (1) and remove the battery from its holder (2). Take an identical lithium battery, press the metal clip in the direction of the arrow (3), and insert the lithium battery into the holder (4). I Avoid any contamination of the battery contact areas by grease etc. Remove any existing fingerprints. When inserting the battery, hold it only at the edges. 38 Service Supplement BX620 S6

43 Recovering the server blade BIOS 5.4 Recovering the server blade BIOS This section describes how to recover the BIOS of a server blade in the event of an error. V CAUTION! This procedure should be used in the event of an error only. Requirements The basic unit is connected to the mains. The server blade has been switched off. There is an external USB floppy disk drive. Creating a BIOS flash floppy disk Extract the BIOS update ZIP archive file on a PC hard disk. I The data for creating the BIOS flash floppy disk is contained in the software pool Insert an empty floppy disk into the floppy disk drive. Run the downloaded FSC_nnnn.exe file and follow the instructions on the screen to create a BIOS flash floppy disk. Recovering the server blade BIOS Connect the monitor, keyboard and mouse to the KVM connector on the rear of the blade server chassis, see operating manual. Remove the server blade from the blade server chassis (see page 18) and open it. Set switch 3 of the DIP switches on the system board figure 23 on page 41) to ON. Close the cover of the server blade and reinstall it in the blade server chassis, see page 19). Insert the BIOS flash floppy disk in a USB floppy disk drive and connect the floppy disk drive to the USB port of the server blade using the USB breakout cable, see operating manual. 44 Recovering the server blade BIOS Press the KVM button on the control panel of the server blade (see operating manual) to switch the keyboard, mouse and monitor of the KVM blade to the server blade. Switch on the server blade, see operating manual. After a short beep, the BIOS is uploaded. The status of the flash process is displayed on the KVM console. After the flash is completed, instructions are displayed for the following procedure: Switch off the server blade. Remove the server blade and open it. Set switch 3 of the DIP switches on the system board to OFF. Close the server blade and reinstall it. Now you can put the server blade back into operation. 44 Service Supplement BX620 S6
