Starting up the server for the first time When starting up a PRIMERGY CX122 S1 server node for the first time, there are several installation options, depending on the system configuration. For further information, please refer to section "Configuring the server" on page 45. System already installed Hard disk drives installed - Local boot Ê Press the On/Off button (item 5 in figure 10 on page 41). The server is switched on, performs a system test and boots the operating system. No hard disk drives installed - iscsi boot iscsi (Internet SCSI) is a protocol for linking servers and data storage facilities, similar to the Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP). iscsi means SCSI over Internet Protocol. iscsi boot allows a server to be booted remotely from a drive in an iscsi-based Storage Area Network (SAN). For further instructions, please refer to the iscsi Boot for PRIMERGY Servers with Intel Network Controllers installation and configuration guide, available from the ServerView Suite DVD 2 or at 44 Operating Manual CX122 S1

46 Configuring the server When starting up a PRIMERGY CX122 S1 server node for the first time, there are several installation options, depending on the system configuration: Hard disk drives installed - Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) boot (recommended) PXE boot requires your machine's BIOS to make a request of a TFTP server for a bootable image (the equivalent of inserting a CD and booting). It is the environment that allows devices to boot up via their network interface. When shipping, the boot sequence of each PRIMERGY CX122 S1 server has been configured to network booting. Right after the power on self test process (POST), the system will execute the PXE bootstrap session, looking for DHCP servers from the network. After selecting the required PXE boot server, the bootstrapping process begins and the PXE firmware asks for the exact path of the NBP (Network Bootstrap Program). After receiving this path, the download process begins. This is done via the Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP, UDP, port 69). Ê Dedicate one server from your network to be a PXE server with the DHCP and TFTP services configured and running. Ê Press the On/Off button (item 5 in figure 10 on page 41). Ê The PXE server will reply to your server s PXE boot request and aid the client system during its bootstrap session. Follow the on-screen instructions. 46 Operating Manual CX122 S1

47 Configuring the server Hard disk drives installed - Local USB installation Instead of network booting, you can also boot and install your PRIMERGY CX122 S1 server node from local USB media. Ê Ê Ê Ê Connect a USB storage medium (hard disk drive, optical drive or flash media) containing a bootable image to your server. Connect a USB mouse / keyboard and VGA display to your server. Switch on the display. Make sure that none of the servers from your network has been dedicated to be a PXE server. Ê Press the On/Off button (item 5 in figure 10 on page 41). Ê Your PRIMERGY CX122 S1 server node will boot from the local disk image. Follow the on-screen instructions.
