Radio interference This product is a "Class A" ITE (Information Technology Equipment). In a domestic environment this product may cause radio interference, in which case the user may be required to take appropriate measures. VCCI-A Aluminum electrolytic capacitors The aluminum electrolytic capacitors used in the product's printed circuit board assemblies and in the mouse and keyboard are limited-life components. Use of these components beyond their operating life may result in electrolyte leakage or depletion, potentially causing emission of foul odor or smoke. As a guideline, in a normal office environment (25 C) operating life is not expected to be reached within the maintenance support period (5 years). However, operating life may be reached more quickly if, for example, the product is used in a hot environment. The customer shall bear the cost of replacing replaceable components which have exceeded their operating life. Note that these are only guidelines, and do not constitute a guarantee of trouble-free operation during the maintenance support period. High safety use This product has been designed and manufactured for general uses such as general office use, personal use, domestic use and normal industrial use. It has not been designed or manufactured for uses which demand an extremely high level of safety and carry a direct and serious risk to life or body if such safety cannot be ensured. 9 1 Introduction Figure 1: PRIMERGY SX910 S1 storage blade The PRIMERGY SX910 S1 storage blade is used as a storage subsystem for the PRIMERGY BX900 S1 blade server and the BX400 S1 blade server and their successor models. The PRIMERGY SX910 S1 storage blade allows an SAS tape drive to be installed together with the corresponding controller and occupies one bay in the PRIMERGY BX900 S1 and BX400 S1 system units. Up to four PRIMERGY SX910 S1 storage blades can be installed in the BX400 S1 system unit. 1.1 Concept and target groups for this manual This operating manual shows you how to install the storage blade in the basic unit, how to start up the storage blade and how to operate it. This operating manual is intended for those responsible for installing the hardware and ensuring that the system runs smoothly. It contains all the information you need to put your PRIMERGY SX910 S1 storage blade into operation. For the Japanese market please use the URL: Performance features The PRIMERGY SX910 S1 storage blade is fitted with a SAS controller of the LSI 1064E type, which controls a tape drive of the LTO3HH, LTO4HH and LTO5HH types with SAS interface. The storage blade has two slots for the SAS controller. This provides the following configuration options: Controller installed in the lower slot The controller accesses the server blade to the left of the storage blade. The tape drive can be used in this way by the server blade on the left. Controller installed in the upper slot The controller accesses the server blade to the right of the storage blade. 15 2 Important notes This chapter provides safety instructions which you must observe when handling your storage blade. 2.1 Safety instructions I The following safety instructions are also provided in the manual "Safety Notes and Regulations" or " 安全上のご注意 ". This device meets the relevant safety regulations for IT equipment. If you have any questions about whether you can install the storage blade in the intended environment, please contact your sales outlet or our customer service team. V CAUTION! The actions described in this manual should only be carried out by technical specialists. Equipment repairs should only be performed by service staff. Any failure to observe the guidelines in this manual, and any unauthorized opening or improper repairs could expose the user to risks (electric shock, fire hazards) or damage the equipment. Please note that any unauthorized opening of the storage blade will void the warranty and exempt the manufacturer from all liability. During installation and before operating the device, observe the instructions on environmental conditions for your device (see section "Technical data" on page 13) If the storage blade has been moved from a cold environment, condensation may form both inside and on the outside of the machine. Wait until the storage blade has acclimatized to room temperature and is absolutely dry before starting it up. Material damage may be caused to the storage blade if this requirement is not met. 16 Safety instructions Important notes For the Japanese market it is not required to transport the device in its original packaging. Check that the rated voltage specified on the device's ID plate is the same as the local line voltage. Never connect or disconnect data transmission lines during a storm (lightning hazard). Make sure that no objects (e.g. bracelets or paper clips) fall into or liquids spill into the device (risk of electric shock or short circuit). Note that proper operation of the system (in accordance with IEC /DIN EN ) is guaranteed only if slot covers are installed on all vacant slots and/or dummies on all vacant bays and the housing cover is fitted (cooling, fire protection, RFI suppression). 16 Operating Manual SX910 S1

17 Important notes Electrostatic sensitive device label 2.2 Electrostatic sensitive device label Modules with electrostatic-sensitive components Systems and components that might be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD) are marked with the following label: Figure 2: ESD label When you handle components fitted with ESDs, you must observe the following points under all circumstances: Remove the power plug before installing or removing components containing ESDs. You must always discharge yourself of static charges (e.g. by touching a grounded object) before working. The equipment and tools you use must be free of static charges. Only touch the components at the positions highlighted in green (touch points). Do not touch any exposed pins or conductors on a component. Use a grounding cable designed for this purpose to connect yourself to the system unit as you install components. Place all components on a static-safe base. I You will find a detailed description for handling ESD components in the relevant European or international standards (DIN EN , ANSI/ESD S20.20). SX910 S1 Operating Manual 17

18 CE conformity Important notes 2.3 CE conformity The system complies with the requirements of the EC directives 2004/108/EC regarding "Electromagnetic Compatibility" and 2006/95/EC "Low Voltage Directive". This is indicated by the CE marking (CE = Communauté Européenne). 2.4 FCC Class A Compliance Statement If there is an FCC statement on the device, it applies to the products covered in this manual, unless otherwise specified herein. The statement for other products will appear in the accompanying documentation. NOTE: This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a "Class A" digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC rules and meets all requirements of the Canadian Interference-Causing Equipment Standard ICES-003 for digital apparatus. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in strict accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no warranty that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. Increase the separation between equipment and the receiver. Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/tv technician for help. Fujitsu is not responsible for any radio or television interference caused by unauthorized modifications of this equipment or the substitution or attachment of connecting cables and equipment other than those specified by Fujitsu. 19 Important notes RFI suppression The use of shielded I/O cables is required when connecting this equipment to any and all optional peripheral or host devices. Failure to do so may violate FCC and ICES rules. WARNING: This is a class A product. In a domestic environment this product may cause radio interference in which case the user may be required to take adequate measures. 2.5 RFI suppression All other equipment which is connected to this product must also have radio noise suppression in accordance with EC Guideline 89/336/EEC. Products which meet this requirement are accompanied by a certificate to that effect issued by the manufacturer and/or bear the CE mark. Products which do not meet this requirement may be operated only with the special permission of the BZT (Bundesamt für Zulassungen in der Telekommunikation). 2.6 Notes on transportation I Only transport the storage blade in its original packaging or in suitable packaging which protects it from knocks and jolts. For the Japanese market it is not required to transport the device in its original packaging. Do not unpack the storage blade until it is at its installation location. SX910 S1 Operating Manual 19

20 Environmental protection Important notes 2.7 Environmental protection Environmentally-friendly product design and development This product has been designed in accordance with the Fujitsu standard for "environmentally friendly product design and development". This means that key factors such as durability, selection and labeling of materials, emissions, packaging, ease of dismantling and recycling have been taken into account. This saves resources and thus reduces the harm done to the environment. Further information can be found at: (for the EMEA market) (for the Japanese market) Energy-saving information Devices that do not need to be constantly switched on should be switched off until they are needed as well as during long breaks and after completion of work. Packaging information This packaging information doesn t apply to the Japanese market. Do not throw away the packaging. You may need it later for transporting the system. If possible, the equipment should only be transported in its original packaging. Information on handling consumables Please dispose of printer consumables and batteries in accordance with the applicable national regulations. In accordance with EU directives, batteries must not be disposed of with unsorted domestic waste. They can be returned free of charge to the manufacturer, dealer or an authorized agent for recycling or disposal. 20 Operating Manual SX910 S1

21 Important notes Environmental protection All batteries containing pollutants are marked with a symbol (a crossed-out garbage can). They are also marked with the chemical symbol for the heavy metal that causes them to be categorized as containing pollutants: Cd Cadmium Hg Mercury Pb Lead Labels on plastic casing parts Please avoid sticking your own labels on plastic parts wherever possible, since this makes it difficult to recycle them. Returns, recycling and disposal Please handle returns, recycling and disposal in accordance with local regulations. The device must not be disposed of with domestic waste. This device is labeled in compliance with European directive 2002/96/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). This directive sets the framework for returning and recycling used equipment and is valid across the EU. When returning your used device, please use the return and collection systems available to you. 23 3 Installation V CAUTION! Follow the safety instructions in the chapter "Important notes" on page 15. The storage blade should not be subjected to any extreme environmental conditions (see section "Technical data" on page 13). Protect the storage blade from dust, humidity and heat. Make sure that the storage blade is acclimatized for the time indicated in this table before putting it into operation. Temperature difference ( C) Minimum acclimatization time (hours) Table 1: Acclimatization time In table "Acclimatization time", the temperature difference refers to the difference between the operating environment temperature and the temperature to which the storage blade was exposed previously (outside, transport or storage temperature). 24 Installation procedure 3.1 Installation procedure Ê Ê Ê Unpacking a storage blade (see the next section on this page). Installing a storage blade in the system unit (see the section "Installing/removing a Storage Blade" on page 25). Putting a storage blade into operation (see the section "Putting the Storage Blade into operation" on page 41 in the chapter "Installation and operation"). 3.2 Unpacking a Storage Blade V CAUTION! Ê Ê Ê Follow the safety instructions in chapter "Important notes". Do not unpack the storage blade until it is at its installation location. Transport the storage blade to the place where you want to set it up. Unpack all individual parts. Keep the original packaging in case you want to transport the storage blade again (applies only to EMEA market). Check the delivery for any damage during transport. Ê Check whether the items delivered match the details on the delivery note. The product name and serial number of the product can be found on the ID card (see section "ID card" on page 38). Ê Notify your supplier immediately should you discover that the items delivered do not correspond to the delivery note. 24 Operating Manual SX910 S1

They provide the server blades in the adjacent slots to the right or left with backup functionality. Different configurations of the storage blades can be operated in the system unit. 26 Installing/removing a Storage Blade Removing the dummy module Any unused slots on the front of the system unit are fitted with appropriate dummy modules to comply with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations and to ensure sufficient cooling of the system components. The power supply unit slots on the back do not necessarily have to be populated. To add a storage blade, you must first remove a dummy module from the relevant slot. 1 Figure 4: Remove the dummy module Ê Push up the release lever (1) and pull the dummy module out of the slot by its handles. V CAUTION! Keep the dummy module for future use. If you remove a storage blade or a server blade and do not replace it with a new one, you must reinstall the dummy module due to cooling, to comply with EMC regulations, and to protect against fire. 26 Operating Manual SX910 S1

27 Installing/removing a Storage Blade Installing the dummy module Slide the dummy module with the release lever down into the empty slot until it clicks into place. Installing the storage blade The PRIMERGY SX910 S1 storage blade can be installed during operation and is recognized by the management blade. You must restart the related server blade to enable the storage blade to communicate with the server blade, see the section "Putting the Storage Blade into operation" on page 41. V CAUTION! Follow the safety instructions and information in section "Electrostatic sensitive device label" on page Figure 5: Unlocking and installing the storage blade I Make sure the storage blade is installed the correct way round. The control panel must be in the area at the top. Ê Undo the locking mechanism (1) of the release lever. SX910 S1 Operating Manual 27

Ê Ê Ê Switch the server blade off: either using the On/Off button on the server blade or using the Web interface of the management blade (see the "PRIMERGY BX900 Blade Server Systems ServerView Management Blade S1 User Interface Description" manual). Undo the locking mechanism of the release lever. Open the release lever. Ê Pull the storage blade out of the slot. V CAUTION! They provide the server blades in the adjacent slots to the right or left with backup functionality. 31 Installing/removing a Storage Blade Removing the dummy module Any unused slots on the front of the system unit are fitted with appropriate dummy modules to comply with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations and to ensure sufficient cooling of the system components. To add a storage blade, you must first remove a dummy module from the relevant slot. 32 Installing/removing a Storage Blade Installing a dummy module Any unused server blade or storage blade slots must be fitted with dummy modules to comply with EMC regulations for the system and to ensure sufficient cooling of the components. Figure 9: Dummy server blade module The handle (1) is movable and acts as a release lever. It must be at the bottom when you install the dummy module in the system unit. 38 Control and display elements Installation and operation ID card You can pull out the ID card (see figure 12 on page 37 above) as far as it will go and push it back in again. The ID card contains various system information, such as the product name, serial number, order number, MAC addresses and DNS name (in the Japanese market, only the product name and the serial number). 38 Operating Manual SX910 S1

39 Installation and operation Control and display elements Controls and indicators on the tape drive This section describes the controls and indicators on the LTO-4 tape drive. For information about the LTO-3 and LTO-5 tape drive please refer to the "LTO-3 Half-Height SAS Tape Drive" manual, "LTO-5 Half-Height SAS Tape Drive" manual, " 内蔵 LTO3 ユニット取扱説明書 " (for the Japanese market) and " 内蔵 LTO5 ユニット取扱説明書 " (for the Japanese market). 41 Installation and operation Putting the Storage Blade into operation 4.2 Putting the Storage Blade into operation The PRIMERGY SX910 S1 storage blade can be installed during operation and is recognized by the management blade. You must restart the related server blade to enable the storage blade to communicate with the server blade. Make sure that the storage blade is inserted correctly in the system unit (see the section "Installing/removing a Storage Blade" on page 25). Ê There are two ways of restarting the server blade(s) related to the storage blade: By pressing the On/Off button on the control panel of the server blade Via the Web interface of the management blade (see the "PRIMERGY BX900 Blade Server Systems ServerView Management Blade S1 User Interface Description" or "PRIMERGY BX400 Blade Server Systems ServerView Management Blade S1 User Interface Description" manual). As soon as the related server blade is in operation, the storage blade's power indicator lights up green. You can now configure the storage blade's tape drive. SX910 S1 Operating Manual 41

43 5 Troubleshooting and tips V CAUTION! Follow the safety instructions in chapter "Important notes" on page 15. If the power-on indicator of the storage blade (see figure 12 on page 37) remains dark after you have switched on the related server blade, follow these instructions: All information on troubleshooting faults that may occur when operating server blades or storage blades in the PRIMERGY BX900 S1 system unit and PRIMERGY BX400 S1 system unit are described in the operating manual for the corresponding system unit. If a fault occurs, try to correct it as described: in the chapter "Troubleshooting and tips" in the operating manual for your system unit, in the chapters for the installed components, in the documentation for the connected devices, in the help systems of the individual programs used. If you do not manage to correct the problem, proceed as follows: Ê Ê Ê Make a note of the steps you have taken and the situation in which the fault occurred.
