3 Metasys Smoke Control Wiring Overview In order for Metasys field wiring to comply with the National Electric Code (NEC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) specifications for smoke control systems, power limited wiring must be separated from non-power limited wiring. Field wiring terminals that are used for power limited wiring must be labeled as such. If terminals are not labeled, they are regarded as non-power limited. Some Metasys hardware may be used in both power limited and non-power limited circuits. These circuits must be segregated during system design to comply with the appropriate codes. For example, if several FM-IUN102 modules are used in power limited circuits while several other FM-IUN102 modules are used in non-power limited circuits, they must be segregated. In base frame configurations, the 1/4 inch solid barrier between Field Terminal Blocks (TBFs) is the separation required for power limited/non-power limited circuits. Therefore, the wiring system must be designed in groups, with each TBF bay being chosen to house all power limited or non-power limited field wiring. See the Wiring Segregation section in this document for details on wiring segregation requirements for Metasys products. In order to meet the requirements of Underwriters Laboratories (UL) under UL 864 UUKL Smoke Control, some of the Metasys field wiring must be protected by installing transzorbs or Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs). This is only required if the field wiring to the monitored and controlled equipment leaves the room where the controller is installed. A more detailed description of the requirements including tables showing which point types require protection may be found in the Metasys Field Interface Point Types section and the Smoke Control I/O Wiring Transient Protection Requirements section in this document. 5 Power Entry Input power (120 VAC) must be brought into the enclosure in the corner nearest its termination location. For example, the EN-EWC10-45 Series enclosure has a conduit entry area molded into the cover (Figure 1). Power must be brought into these locations based on where the power box is located. For the EN-EWC100, 200, and 500 Series enclosures, power must be brought into the enclosure in the upper right corner. No other wiring can be located in this power wiring area (Figure 1). 6 Metasys Field Interface Point Types Type 1, Pneumatic Modules (No Separation Concerns) Type 2, Modules Rated as Power Limited Only For Type 1 modules (pneumatic only), field connections are made to the modules via air lines. Therefore, these modules may be placed anywhere in a system. In application specific products, this is not a problem since all field wiring is power limited. 7 Type 3, Modules Rated as Both Power Limited and Non-power Limited (Application Specific) For Type 3 modules (power limited/non-power limited), it is up to the system designer to ensure that modules are segregated, based on application. For example, if several FM-IUN102 modules are used to sense line voltage, they cannot all reside in the same base frame bay as power limited modules. The system must be configured to group the FM-IUN102 modules being used for 1K RTD applications with other power limited wiring. The FM-IUN102 modules used to sense line voltage must be grouped in a bay with other non-power limited modules. In base frame applications, wiring must be grouped by bays. Each bay in a base frame must be dedicated as either power limited or non-power limited. Base frames are shipped with a label on each bay stating Power Limited Field Terminal. When configuring a base frame, and using a bay for non-power limited field connections, you must use a permanent black marking pen to cover the wording in the label. The only bays that should display this label must be totally dedicated to power limited field wiring. Bays that do not display this label must be totally dedicated to non-power limited field wiring. In no case should power limited field wiring be mixed with non-power limited field wiring. The XTM/XPx-xxx product line has labels displaying whether or not it is power limited or non-power limited. For the XPx modules shown in Table 1, if the field wiring is non-power limited, the power limited label must be covered with a black permanent marking pen as explained above. For a specific module, only one type of wiring may be used per side on the module. Table 1: Power Limited and Non-Power Limited Modules Module Type FM-IBN101 NU-XBN101 FM-IUN102 FM-ORE101 FM-ORL101 FM-ORM101 NU-XRE101 NU-XRL101 NU-XRM101 XPE-4xx-5 XPL-4xx-5 XPM-4xx-5 Input (No Relay): Connect these inputs to a UL Listed Class II or Class III source of power supply to be considered a power limited module. If not connected as described above, follow the guidelines defined in the Wiring Segregation section of this document. Strictly Relay Contact: Connect these contacts to a UL Listed Class II or Class III source of power supply to be considered a power limited module. If not connected as described above, follow the guidelines defined in the Wiring Segregation section of this document. Input (also with Relay): Connect these contacts to a UL Listed Class II or Class III source of supply to be considered a power limited module. 8 Wiring Segregation Since the AHU (Air Handling Unit), VAV (Variable Air Volume) Controller, UNT (Unitary) Controller, VMA (Variable Air Volume Modular Assembly), contain only power limited field connections, they are not discussed here. In base frame applications, power limited/non-power limited wiring must be positively segregated. N1 and N2 communication lines are considered power limited and must be routed only with other power limited wiring. The cable trays provided in the EN-EWC Series base frame enclosures must be used to separate power limited from non-power limited wiring (Figure 2). You must decide whether to use the inner or outer tray for a particular type of wiring. Then decide how the wiring will exit the enclosure, while keeping the segregation between power limited and nonpower limited wiring. Field wires must be taken from the field wiring terminals, directly into the cable trays (Figure 3). The XTM/XPx product line is handled in a similar way (Figure 4). There are no wire trays so cables must be wire tied off to maintain segregation. For more wiring information on the XTM/XPx product line, see XTM-105 Extension Module, XPx-xxx Expansion Modules Technical Bulletin (LIT ). To meet this requirement, some of the Metasys field wiring must be protected by either transzorbs or MOVs. If the hardware you are using is not mentioned in the following sections, no transient protection is required. When installing the transient protectors (MOVs, transzorbs), care must be taken when installing a protector in close proximity to other protectors. Before the protective device is installed in the terminal block, it must be twisted together with the field lead and inserted into the terminal block as one wire. The wire must be twisted tightly around the transient protection device a minimum of two turns before it is inserted into the terminal block (Figure 5). All field wiring, with the exception of the N2, must be kept in the room the controllers are mounted in. When using the DX-9100/9120 product line for Listed Smoke Control, there are only two I/O restrictions. The DX-9100-xxxxF base must be used. This base has the transient protection already installed. Also, when using the XP-9102, if the field wiring leaves the room the XP-9102 is installed in, the protection shown in Table 2 must be installed. The MOV must be a Johnson Controls Code No. SMOKE-MOVKIT. For further information on the DX-9100/9120 product line, refer to the DX-9100/9120 Applications section, under the Smoke Control tab of the Metasys Network Technical Manual (FAN 636).
