1 Hardware Announcement October 18, 2005 New Advanced Connectivity Technology console management switches and conversion options for IBM xseries and BladeCenter systems Overview New ACT switches are a high-function, economical, and space-efficient alternative to current KVM solutions used to cable and manage rack servers. By using CAT5 cabling instead of bulky, cumbersome KVM cables, this set of products is an innovative solution for setting up and monitoring multiple racks with multiple servers from one or more consoles. These powerful switches support nearly all xseries servers. They allow three levels of tiering. Benefits Highly scalable; support for up to 16 servers per chain, up to 2,048 servers when tiering Up to eight chains to a Local 2 x 8 Up to 16 chains to either Global Investment protection; backward-compatible with existing xseries servers Easy and less expensive to deploy than traditional KVM solutions The conversion options allow switch cable plugging into either a PS/2 KVM port or a USB KVM port on the back of a server. Innovative design The new ACT switches are easy to install. The cabling is handled outside the server as opposed to solutions that require a PCI card to convert KVM signals for CAT5 cabling. ACT eliminates the need to: Open the server to install it Use a valuable PCI slot Rerun wiring if the server is taken off line Accept a high level of system blocking Setup and management made easy Powered by intuitive OSDs for simplified setup and management applications Local 2 x 8, which includes On Screen Configuration and Reporting (OSCAR) for IBM; support for local management Global (2 x 16 or 4 x 16), which includes OSCAR for IBM and Java -based Virtual Console Software; support for local and remote management Three-year limited warranty IBM 10GbE SR Server Adapter Option This adapter is the first PCI-X bit, 266 MHz 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapter in the industry. It delivers full 10 Gigabit Ethernet performance for xseries server systems (10x the performance of today s Gigabit Ethernet). The adapter operates over industry-standard optical fiber multimode (850 nm SR) cabling with XPAK module and LC connectors. Product positioning ACT is one of three xseries connectivity solutions that enable multiple rack-mounted xseries servers to be connected and monitored through a single console. These solutions are: Traditional KVM Cost-effective for small installations, but takes up more rack space and requires cumbersome cabling. Innovative ACT Uses CAT5 cabling and external conversion options attached to remote or local switches to monitor and manage large numbers of servers containing either USB or KVM ports. Allows chaining of systems together to help reduce cable clutter. PS/2 KB and mouse ports. The Global 2 x 16 and Global 4 x 16 contain OSCAR for IBM for applications used for local management of xseries servers attached to them. In addition, these options contain Virtual Console software used for remote management of xseries servers from up to four clients attached through the LAN

6 Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eserver system. It is designed to monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU, at your request, you will be charged for the installation. You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it, at no additional charge under the type of warranty service specified below, on-site service. Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next-business-day (NBD) delivery. IBM specifies in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. On-site service is not available in all countries, and some countries have kilometer or mileage limitations from an IBM service center. 7 Maintenance services ServicePac, ServiceSuite, and ServiceElect ServicePac, ServiceSuite and ServiceElect provide hardware warranty service upgrades, maintenance, and selected support services in one agreement. Warranty service upgrade: During the warranty period, warranty service upgrade provides an enhanced level of on-site service for an additional charge. A warranty service upgrade must be purchased during the warranty period and is for a fixed term (duration). It is not refundable or transferable and may not be prorated. If required, IBM will provide the warranty service upgrade enhanced level of on-site service acquired by the customer. Service levels are time objectives and are not guaranteed.
