Of Central Pennsylvania The AST Takes Cumberland Valley High School s Technology Class s Mirror Box Project to the 2009 ACA Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Starting almost a year ago in 2008, the senior Technology Class at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, PA, was studying manufacturing. The class, led by senior David Washburn, took on the project of manufacturing a product from scratch to a finished product that could be used to help others. In this instance, the product: twenty Mirror Boxes for limb loss persons experiencing phantom pain, or phantom sensation. The idea for the manufacturing the Mirror Boxes originated with Mrs. Kathy Heisler, a psychology teacher, and a part of the special Richard Nickle, AST President, takes his turn covering the AST Non-profit needs student staff. She spoke about Display Table at the recent ACA Conference, displaying a Mirror Box, a tool Phantom Pain on several occasions at AST used in working with phantom pain and phantom sensation. Of the many Meetings, and welcomed members of the AST persons who came by the table to test the Mirror Box, many were surprised to speak to her psychology classes about limb at how they worked. One women with partial limb loss of both hands, for the loss. first time, was able to move her single residual thumb, and felt her thumb on her hand without a thumb move. This is fooling the brain visually. As is done with a manufactured product, the Mirror Boxes were made available to physical therapy and rehabilitation clinics in the area around Mechanicsburg and beyond. AST Wants PA HB 1333 Prosthetic Parity Passed for all Amputees: AST is planning to make PA HB 1333 Prosthetic Parity Bill a Pennsylvania legislative priority this coming Fall.
