Audible Pedestrian crossing at Indian Lakes Boulevard/Settler s Landing, June 17, 2013 A local news agency did a feature story on a visually impaired citizen that wanted to be able to proceed on his own thru a busy intersection near his home. He contacted the news agency who in turn contacted Staff here at the Traffic Management Center (TMC). Staff had installed this type of equipment at other intersections. We met him at one of the previously done intersections to give him an idea of what to expect. He was very pleased with that example. Staff then went to the citizen s neighborhood and determined the best possible intersection there. The installations began after we reached agreement on the Indian Lakes Boulevard/Settler s landing intersection. The Traffic Engineering bureau provided project funding thru the traffic safety improvement program; ADA compliant ramps were installed along with the audible pedestrian devices. Greg Sawyer (TMC Supervisor) and Steve Smith (Signal Electronics Technician II) were the staff members involved with the project. The citizen was very pleased with the outcome of this project

Regional ITS Architecture Use & Maintenance Workshop Williamsburg, VA, March The purpose of this workshop was to identify what our region had to do to efficiently and productively use and maintain it s architecture. In addition, the workshop was geared to explain how to use our architecture: - In ITS planning and design - In programming/budgeting - In Project Concept of Operations Development - For project implementation The workshop was very well attended with a participant list of 45 attendees from VDOT, FHWA, municipalities and private industry 2

3 III. ITS Virginia, Richmond Virginia, May 16, 2013 Staff (Franklin Hickman) was asked to be a presenter at ITS Virginia 2013 and speak on Funding ITS Projects from the Locality Perspective. He spoke on ITS accomplishments using federal funds and accomplishments using local municipal operating budget funds. The presentation highlighted the projects from the program that were completed with the aid of federal funds i.e. the completion of the Traffic Management Center and installation of a 40 mile fiber optic communications backbone. The projects completed using local funds included: doubling the size of the fiber optic backbone using in-house staff and annual service construction contracts; development of an in-house fiber optic work center which involved sending 12 technicians for fiber optic splicing certification; using staff to convert existing RS232 controllers to Ethernet, saving $1000 per conversion. 3

4 IV. Lincoln Angel Figuereo Retirement, June 01, 2013 Lincoln Figuereo, Traffic Operations Superintendent, retired after 27.5 years of service to the City of Virginia Beach. Angel helped to direct the expansion of a traffic signal network from 150 to 370 signals; the conversion from a DOS based central signal control system to a PC based central system; the movement of our traffic signal control system from a 12x12 cinderblock room to a 5000 square foot Traffic Management Center. Parting gifts presented at a local restaurant Departing comments to staff and associates Angel plans to return home to the Dominican Republic to manage his family farm and other enterprises.
