City of Virginia Beach Intelligent Transportation Systems Workshop, November 2 and 3, 2011 The City of Virginia Beach Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Workshop was organized and planned by the City s On-Call ITS engineering services consultants, Grice Consulting Group. John Funny, of Grice Consulting Group, hosted the ITS Workshop. The Workshop was located at the Advanced Technology Center, on the Tidewater Community College Virginia Beach campus. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss the City s existing ITS infrastructure, identify its goals and objectives for the system, and receive input from the City s stakeholders on their ITS concerns. The City Stakeholders and Partners are considered the organizations that would benefit from the advantages of traffic management, using Intelligent Transportation Systems components. With the participation of the various City Stakeholders and Partners, the Workshop was very successful in achieving its goals. Several of the objectives included: Defining the meaning of ITS Explaining the impact of traffic conditions without ITS Determining how ITS can be utilized to improve traffic conditions Defining who benefits from ITS Determining the stakeholders roles, and responsibilities, in the use and advancement of ITS initiates The City of Virginia Beach Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Workshop agenda consisted of two half day Workshops. The first day consisted of mostly members of the City of Virginia Beach Stakeholders and Partners, organizations and agencies. This Workshop started with an overview of the Traffic Management Center and the various Intelligent Transportation System components. The Workshop sessions went on to discuss the before mentioned goals and objectives of the ITS systems. The first day Workshop ended with a group discussion, in which all the Stakeholders and Partners were asked to define their User Needs. This can be best described as the way in which the individual Stakeholder can benefit from the use of the City of Virginia Beach Traffic Management Center, and the Intelligent Transportation Systems components. The second day of the workshop had more of the technical experienced Stakeholders involved with the group sessions. On this day, one of the discussions consisted of stories in which Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) were used to improve traffic congestion conditions in the other metropolitan areas. The future of ITS development was brought to attention during another session. The agenda ended with separate discussions on travelers benefits of ITS components, vehicle communication using ITS technology, use of roadside ITS components, and advancements in Traffic Management Center development.

3 Oleg Pekeman, TransCore, leads a discussion on the various aspects of Traffic Management Center development, and the New York City ITS infrastructure II. TMC Tour for Scout Troops 179 and 362, Sunday, November 6, 2011 George Hardin (Signal Timing Engineer), Brain Proctor & Dempsey Bruton (Traffic Engineering Bureau) hosted a tour of the Traffic Management Center for two Scout Troops. The Scouts were shown the TMC video wall and given a demonstration of the operations of the City s traffic cameras and traffic signals. The Troops were also shown several of the traffic control devices that are on display in the TMC.

4 A total of 45 Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts participated in the event. III. Traffic Management Operations Division Response Information Some of the vital statistics we address each month 1.
