3 The President s Message by Michael S. Sherber, P. E.; LEED AP, HPDP; CT ASHRAE President April, 2012 Our March dinner meeting held jointly with CT ASPE at the City Steam brew pub was a success with a large turnout. The program was on geo-exchange, also known as ground source heat pumps. We have two worthwhile programs coming up over our last two dinner meetings. Our April dinner meeting will be on chilled beams with Darren Alexander PE, TWA Panel Systems, Inc. as our speaker. Our April program will also be both Research Promotion Night and Student Activities Night. Make sure you block out Thursday, April 19, 2012, 1:00 PM - $4:00 PM EDT, for the ASHRAE webinar on Dedicated Outside Air Systems (DOAS). The three presenters will be Tim McGinn, PE, LEED AP who is a principal of DIALOG in Calgary, Alberta; Dr. Stan Mumma, PhD, PE, who is Professor Emeritus from Penn State; and John Murphy, LEED AP, who is an applications engineer for the Trane Company. If you do not want to stay hunched over your PC screen for three hours in past years The Trane Company has sponsored a room to watch the webinar at their Rocky Hill offices. Check our website and elsewhere in this newsletter for details. At the Chicago Winter Meeting Dr. Mumma was one of the speakers at a seminar session on DOAS that I chaired and I can say from firsthand experience that he is an excellent speaker and well worth listening to. Our May dinner meeting, which is the final dinner meeting of this ASHRAE year, will be Energy Analysis, Option or Necessity? given by ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Julian de Bullet. This is our second DL dinner presentation of the year which is a testament to good job that President-Elect and Program Chair Fran Brancieri has done this year. Most chapters are lucky if they can get one DL for a dinner meeting during the year. The May dinner meeting is also Past President s Night. Michael S. Sherber, P. 6 Research Promotion By Edward Gutowski, PE, LEED AP, HPDP Chairman: Research Promotion April 2012 At this April s Connecticut ASHRAE meeting we will raise awareness of the goals we set out to achieve as a Chapter and to bring to light some of the work that is going on in Society right now by having our spring research promotion night. Part of who we are as a group and what we say in one voice is achieved through the efforts of our Research Promotion campaign. The economy is still recovering and many are gaining their footing again, it is our hope that you help keep the voice of our Chapter strong by contribution to the 2012 campaign. Connecticut is blessed with opportunities for many capable and competent people that make up the HVAC&R industry here at home. If you are one of these fortunate many please consider a contribution in any amount that will help make our industry stronger for our future and send a message to all that Connecticut and Western Massachusetts values the advancement of the arts and sciences of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigerating to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world. 10 News from ASHRAE Operation and Maintenance Guideline from ASHRAE Now Available ATLANTA A newly published guideline from ASHRAE gives facility managers and building operating staff a strong foundation on which to improve performance of all buildings. ASHRAE Guideline , Sustainable, High Performance Operation and Maintenance, provides guidance on optimizing operation and maintenance of buildings to achieve the lowest economic and environmental life cycle cost without sacrificing safety or functionality. The guideline will assist those who operate and maintain buildings to achieve high performance: safe, productive indoor environments; low economic life cycle cost; low energy, water and resource use; and low impacts on the environment, Michael Bobker, chair of the Guideline 32 committee. The guideline applies to all buildings, not just new ones. We believe that all buildings can move toward sustainable high performance in their operations and maintenance. The guideline applies to the ongoing operational practices for buildings and systems with respect to energy efficiency, occupant comfort, indoor air quality, health and safety. These systems include the building envelope, HVAC&R, plumbing, complementary energy systems, and utilities and electrical systems. Modern air conditioning systems protect the health, comfort and productivity of building occupants, ASHRAE Presidential Member Bill Harrison, whose presidential theme focused on the need for operation and maintenance, said. Unfortunately, they consume a lot of energy while providing these benefits. When these systems are not operated properly, the energy they use can increase by 50 percent or more. ASHRAE Guideline 32 helps building owners and managers evaluate and eliminate the wasted energy caused by poor operating procedures. The elimination of non-value producing energy helps protect our environment while saving the building owner money. Guideline 32 provides a no regrets path to improving energy efficiency in our buildings. The guideline contains recommendations for three levels of building oversight: senior managers, facility managers and technicians. Checklists for tracking that appropriate steps are being taken to move toward high-performance operation and maintenance are included for each. Among the items on the checklist are: Technicians Develop an HVAC system maintenance program using ANSI/ASHRAE/ACCA Standard 180, Standard Practice for Inspection and Maintenance of Commercial Building HVAC Systems Maintain access and code required clearances to all HVAC and electrical equipment Facility managers Develop and implement protocols for good facility/system documentation Establish performance baselines and targets. Institute a system for regular reporting and evaluation. Senior managers Assess buildings, workforce, practices, management tools and systems Measure and report on building performance as part of regular business analytics The cost of ASHRAE Guideline 32, Sustainable, High-Performance Operations and Maintenance, is $69 ($59, ASHRAE members). To order, contact ASHRAE Customer Contact Center at (United States and Canada) or (worldwide), fax , or visit ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a building technology society with more than 50,000 members worldwide. The Society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability within the industry. Through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow s built environment today.
