2 CONNE Science, Education, and EVENT BACKGROUND Welcome to this regional planning event for the future of Cyber Infrastructure (broadband) in our area. This event brings together community and state leaders, from business and government, to focus on the future of Cyber Infrastructure in Southwest New Mexico and alignment with state-wide planning. Cyber Infrastructure (CI) [A Definition]: Comprehensive infrastructure needed to capitalize on dramatic advances in information technology (e.g. networking (broadband), computers, and technical expertise). Often CI resources can be shared for the benefit of multiple stakeholders within a community, state, and country (often being more cost effective). Collaborative planning for Cyber Infrastructure is essential in New Mexico for several important reasons: New Mexico is a large, rural, and diverse state (212,298 square miles, the equivalent of twice of Pennsylvania). The terrain is mountainous desert, checker-boarded with isolated, tiny communities and sovereign tribal lands. The population density averages 17 people per square mile versus the national average of 87. The last-mile build out of high speed networks (CI) in desert or mountainous terrain has been prohibitively expensive. Collaborative planning is expected to lead to more sustainable and affordable long-term solutions. This is one of five regional planning events which will contribute to a state-wide event focused on establishing a strong advisory group to advocate for Cyber Infrastructure (broadband) plans benefiting regions across the state. This expanded collaboration between higher education, communities, business, and state government is intended to lead to a concerted collaborative design to extend and sustain broadband (CI) to serve all constituencies, in advance of future New Mexico legislative sessions. Each regional planning event will address how the availability of quality Cyber Infrastructure (broadband) impacts 1) Economic Development; 2) Scientific Research and Education; and 3) Technical Design and Management of Cyber infrastructure (e.g. Networking, Computing, and related Support). New Mexico Highlands University is proud to host this regional planning event in partnership with the National Science Foundation, University of New Mexico (UNM), New Mexico State University (NMSU), New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT), NM Partnership, NM Technology in Education (NM TIE), and other partners.
