Overview The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway solution, comprised of IBM System Storage V2.3 software and the IBM System Storage TS7650G Deduplication Server (3958-DD3) hardware, is designed to address the disk-based data protection needs of enterprise data centers. V2.3 is enhanced to include IP Replication, IBM i support, and a low-cost "no deduplication" licensing option. 2 The TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway solution is an enterprise-class data protection platform designed to protect business information while reducing the amount of physical disk storage space required and improving the reliability and quality of backups. Deploying the TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway solution can help your business more efficiently protect and manage data, at lower cost. Key prerequisites IBM System Storage V2.3 software requires the IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway hardware (3958 Model DD1 or DD3). Using the V2.3 IP Replication function on a TS7650G Model DD1 Server requires a second Ethernet adapter to be installed on the Model DD1. Planned availability date September 4, 2009 Availability of programs with encryption algorithm in France is subject to French government approval. Cryptography in this product is limited to password encryption, authentication or digital signature. Description IBM System Storage V2.3 enhances the previous functionality by adding support for IP replication, IBM i attachment, and a low-cost "no deduplication" licensing option. The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway is a virtual tape library (VTL) that is designed to backup applications as one or many automated tape libraries, without changing existing backup policies, practices, or procedures. The backup application accesses virtual tape drives, robotics, and cartridges just as it would in a physical tape library environment. This solution is designed to support: Backup applications designed for use with tape storage Use of disk as a backup medium with existing tape backup applications Emulation of the IBM TS3500 tape library with IBM Ultrium 3 tape drives Emulation of the Quantum P3000 tape library with DLT or IBM Ultrium 2 tape drives Path failover Optional clustering support for higher availability and performance Optional replication support to allow virtual cartridges to be copied to a target Scalabilty up to 1 PB The TS7650G is designed for open systems attached to SAN environments over Fibre Channel (FC) connections. It can help data centers improve their data protection operations, while reducing the storage required. The TS7650G features HyperFactor technology, a data deduplication technology that searches for redundancy in the data while it is backed up. It stores only the unique data, but tracks all references, maintaining the quality of backup data. 3 space saved through elimination of redundant data, organizations can retain more backups "online" for a longer period of time, which can help enable them to recover critical data and files more quickly. Typical VTL solutions provide about 2:1 compression of the data backed up. The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway, using HyperFactor data deduplication technology, reduce the amount of storage capacity required by up to 25 times or more. ProtecTIER's IP replication function addresses two of the biggest requirements in a deduplication environment today: DR capabilities and off-site storage/archival. ProtecTIER IP replication provides a simple, affordable, over the WAN method to move data to a remote DR site, and supports Tape archiving capabilities outside of the primary production environment. IP replication only transmits deduplicated data to the target cluster. This significantly reduces the network bandwidth required to copy the data from the source cluster to the target cluster. ProtecTIER's IP replication is supported between any combination of and ProtecTIER Appliance Edition. User-defined policies instruct ProtecTIER which virtual cartridges to replicate. Data path failover supports virtual Ultrium Tape Drives in the TS3500 virtual tape library using the IBM device driver for AIX, Linux, Windows, Solaris, and HP- UX. Data path failover is designed to provide a failover mechanism in the IBM device driver to enable configuration of multiple redundant paths in a SAN environment. In the event of a path or component failure, the failover mechanism is designed to automatically provide error recovery to retry the current operation using an alternate, preconfigured path without aborting the current job in progress. This provides flexibility in configuration, availability, and management of the SAN. ProtecTIER path failover functions are not supported with Quantum P3000 virtual tape library definitions. Customers desiring a lower-cost software offering may license ProtecTIER V2.3 as a generation 1 VTL. The HyperFactor data deduplication functionality must remain disabled while this licensing option is in effect. Data integrity: HyperFactor technology helps avoid "hash collisions" or "false positive" data matches. Data agnostic: Not sensitive to data type, file name, or data structure of the specific backup application (unlike content-aware approaches). Path failover: Helps enhance availability IP replication: Reduces the data transferred over the IP network in support of DR plans by up to 25 times. The IBM System Storage TS7650 ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway differs from many other open systems virtual tape offerings through its in-line deduplication performance. Comparable offerings perform the actual deduplication as a post-process, which can elongate the backup cycle and increase disk storage requirements (and cost). Additional hardware, defined in the announcement for IBM 3958-DD3, is required to complete the TS7650G deduplication solution. Management console IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway must have a console in order to perform system installation and maintenance. One console (monitor, keyboard, and mouse) is required for each server. If multiple ProtecTIER servers need to be accessed, they can be connected to a console via a switch box or via a terminal server. You must place the console hardware order separately from the TS7650G solution order. The console must be capable of operating one of the following operating systems: Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 Red Hat Enterprise 4, or later The console must also have: At least 100 MB of available disk space At least 256 MB of RAM The console must have access to the ProtecTIER service nodes at IP address (port 3501 is open on the firewall). Software requirements Operating system prerequisites The appropriate Linux operating system is included with the IBM System Storage V2.3 software and is loaded on the TS7650G Gateway with your initial order. 7 If this IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway engine is to be accessed via ProtecTIER Manager installed on another computer, network connections must be configured to allow access. The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway front end links will be up only after configuring a repository. File system prerequisites The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway stores data in Red Hat Global File Systems (GFS). Tivoli Storage Manager and other compatible software offerings can provide storage and tape management software for the TS7650G. Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server. Data deduplication Order basic capacity authorizations corresponding to the total terabytes (TB) managed by each ProtecTIER server. This entitles the customer to use the HyperFactor data deduplication functionality of ProtecTIER. It is required for every TS7650G Gateway which will deduplicate data received from a backup application. Basic capacity authorizations are not required for "no deduplication" licenses, or for the target system in a replication pair. Terabyte capacity ordering is by cumulative tier. Starting with tier 1 (1-12 TB), order the quantity from each successive tier required to reach the total TB managed by the server, filling each tier in succession. The tier 6 per TB 251+ feature is limited to a quantity of 250. If the total capacity managed by the ProtecTIER server is 500 TB or less, order the authorizations above 250 TB using the tier 6 per TB 251+ feature, to reach the required total. If the total capacity managed by the server is greater than 500 TB but less than 750 TB on a new order, order the per 250 TB 251+ tier 6 feature, with an additional quantity of per TB 251+ features (up to 250), to meet the required total of managed TB authorizations. For total managed capacity at or above 750 TB and below 1000 TB in a new order, order quantity 2 of the per 250 TB, 251+ feature, to reach the required range before using the tier 6 per TB 251+ features to reach the exact total. Replication Order replication capacity authorizations corresponding to the total terabytes (TB) managed by the TS7650G Gateway. This entitles the customer to use the replication functionality of ProtecTIER. It is required for every TS7650 Gateway which replicates data to another TS7650 appliance or TS7650G gateway, or receives replicated data from another TS7650 Appliance or TS7650G gateway. Terabyte capacity ordering is by cumulative tier. Starting with tier 1 (1-12 TB), order the quantity from each successive tier required to reach the total TB managed by the server, filling each tier in succession. Clustered servers When two TS7650G Gateways (3958 Models DD1 or DD3) share a single disk repository, order cluster authorization corresponding to the total storage capacity of the repository. Note: Cluster support requires cluster feature enablement on the corresponding TS7650G (IBM3958 Model DD1 or DD3) hardware order. Refer to the Hardware Announcement listed in the Reference information section. Capacity upgrade orders Customer representatives should be prepared to furnish the ProtecTIER server serial or system identification unit (SIU) for the server (or servers in a cluster) being upgraded with additional capacity. Upgrade orders using cumulative tiers are made starting within the tier representing the current capacity authorized (for capacity with current Software Maintenance). Once pricing tier 6 has been reached (beyond 250 TB), all subsequent upgrade orders are made from tier 6, so long as Software Maintenance at or above that authorization level is current. Single capacity upgrade orders of less than 250 TB total can be made from tier 6 using the per TB 251+ order feature. For single orders from tier 6 of greater than 250 TB, use a combination of the per 250 TB and per TB tier 6 order features to reach the required total. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance. Licensing IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance). Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z ) agreement applies for subscription and support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures. These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.
