1 Radnor Middle School Course Syllabus Created November 5, 2013: Gail Furman Fill in course name: Technology Education Computers Put in course number (4 digits): Credits: Grades: 8 Weighted: Prerequisite: Length: 1 Semester, Every Other Day Format Overall Description of Course Students meet for one semester every other day and learn advanced concepts using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Access. Students build their typing speed and accuracy using proper typing techniques. Students will also learn HTML coding, digital photography, Photoshop Elements, Google Picasa, and scanning. Also learn how to be safe when using the computer. Common Core Standards Keystone Connections: Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts. Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks. Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 6-8 texts and topics. Analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to an understanding of the topic. Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table). Distinguish among facts, reasoned judgment based on research findings, and speculation in a text. By the end of grade 8, read and comprehend science/technical texts in the grades 6-8 text complexity band independently and proficiently. Student Objectives: Students will learn how to create a newsletter using the various features in Microsoft Word Students will learn how to create a table using relative and absolute numbers, pie chart, and formula page using the various features in Microsoft Excel Students will learn how to create and present a PowerPoint presentation using the various features in Microsoft PowerPoint Students will learn how to create a mail merge using Microsoft Access 2007 and Microsoft 8 th Grade Computers 1 11/26/2013
2 Word Students will learn how to create and show a mock web page using HTML coding and Notepad. Students will learn how to take photographs using a digital camera, how to scan documents using a scanner, and manipulate both with Adobe Photoshop Elements and/or Google Picasa 3. Students learn how to build their typing accuracy and speed using the software program Typing Instructor. Students are able to type at least 25 words per minute with 90% or better accuracy. Students are able to hand in a completed Newsletter using the features shown in Microsoft Advanced Word Students are able to hand in and show the class a completed PowerPoint presentation using the features shown in Microsoft Advanced PowerPoint Students are able to hand in a completed Table, Pie Chart, and Formula Page using the features shown in Microsoft Advanced Excel Students are able to hand in five mail merge letters and envelopes using Microsoft Access 2007 and Microsoft Word Students are able to hand in and show the class their mock web page using HTML coding and Notepad.
