3 James Grant ury II rom Three uries or Solo Tuba ROGRAM NOTES Three uries or Solo Tuba was composed in January and ebruary o 1993 at the request o tubist Mark Nelson to whom the work is grateully dedicated The surprising and indeed remarkable lexibility possessed by the tuba inspired a music that is immediate good-natured and un requiring o the perormer both keen musicianship and physical stamina Each o the Three uries requires virtuoso playing in its own right oering a multiplicity o distinct rhythms melodic igures and articulations: ury I is marked "decidedly ocular" and is a pleasant ramble through the registers o the tuba eaturing angular arpeggios and tonguing demands that one does not usually associate with the instrument ury II in orm somewhat reminiscent o a minuet with trio contrasts series o long arching arpeggiated igures with an amicable waltz marked "gently inebriated" ury III is relentless and powerul exploiting the ull dynamic and articulative range o the tuba Again the perormer is met with technical and interpretive demands not normally encountered in the tuba literature A current biography o James Grant is available online at wwwjamesgrantmusiccom 2001 James Grant / Grantwood Music ress All Rights Reserved wwwjamesgrantmusiccom
