2 About the Comoser Andre Boysen r (b 9) is resently a roessor in the music deartment at the niversity o Ne Hamshire, here he conducts the ind symhony and teaches conducting and comosition nder his leadershi, the NH ind symhony has released six recordings and been invited to erorm at regional conventions o the College Band Directors National Association and National Association or Music Education reviously, Boysen taught at Indiana State niversity and Cary Grove (IL) High School, and as the music director and conductor o the Deerield Community Concert Band He remains active as a guest conductor and clinician, aearing ith high school, university and estival ensembles across the nited States, Great Britain, and Australia Boysen earned his Doctor o Musical Arts degree in ind conducting at the Eastman School o Music, here he served as conductor o the Eastman Wind Orchestra and assistant conductor o the Eastman Wind Ensemble He received his Master o Music degree in ind conducting rom Northestern niversity in 99 and his Bachelor o Music degree in music education and music comosition rom the niversity o Ioa in 99 He maintains an active schedule as a comoser, receiving commissions rom estival, university, and high school concert bands across the nited States Boysen on the International Horn Society Comosition Contest in 000, the niversity o Ioa Honors Comosition rize in 99 and has tice on the Claude T Smith Memorial Band Comosition Contest, in 99 and 994 Boysen has several ublished orks ith the Neil A Kos Music Comany, Wingertones Music, Alred Music, Masters Music, and C Alan ublications, including ieces or band, orchestra, clarinet and iano, and brass choir Recordings o his music aear on the Sony, RKal, Mark, St Ola and El labels About the Comosition By My Side as commissioned by Mike Carnahan and the South Tama County High School (IA) Band in loving memory o Ian Mcate, and remiered by that ensemble on May, 04, Ian s birthday Ian as an eighth grade ercussionist in the South Tama County Band rogram ho as killed by a car hile crossing the road during crosscountry ractice My iece attemts to cature Ian s ersonality and character, using music ith a Celtic quality to acknoledge his heritage and love or Irish music The structural concet or the ork is insired by the ords o hat is oten called the Runner s rayer, hich begins ith the ords Run by my side, using three sections in hich the irst resents Ian s Chorale, the second resents a Running Theme, and the third and inal section combines the to The basic building blocks or the iece come rom the use o a musical crytogram, a comositional aroach that assigns musical itches to notes o the alhabet, alloing the comoser to sell ords musically In this case, the notes BAG sell IAN and those notes become the melodic and structural basis or the iece The oening melody is the last three notes o a descending maor scale, resented initially in the key o G maor as art o Ian s Chorale at the beginning o the iece The musical texture during this section uses to mallet layers and a lute solo, since Ian s sister Morgan as a lute layer and he and his other sister, Mackenzie, ere ercussionists The melodic line that gros out o these three notes is also very similar to another melody I rote or a iece called I Am, reerencing a connection I have ith the band s director, Mike Carnahan Ater Ian s Chorale builds and eventually subsides, a ne theme emerges in maor, aster and more energetic This is the Running Theme, a entatonic melody derived rom Ian s Chorale, hich also develos and builds toard a climactic hrase beore shiting keys into E lat maor or the inal section, during hich Ian s Chorale emerges alongside the Running Theme, in eect oining us and running By (Our) My Side, beore inally disaearing into the distance
