2 2 The Comoser An artist o widely diverse musical talents, Mike orbes (b. 1973) is an outstanding tubist with a solid, colorul tone, terriic technical skills, and dramatic lair (American Record Guide). He began his career as a tubist with the U.S. Army and, "ershing s Own" and subsequently served on the music aculties at a number o Midwestern universities. He is an active orchestral tubist and in high demand as a clinician and soloist, requently erorming throughout the United States, Canada, and Euroe. As a co-ounder o the Sotto Voce Quartet, orbes enjoys erorming and recording exhilarating chamber music with his colleagues in America s remiere tuba/euhonium quartet. He can be heard on his solo album, orbes lays Koetsier (Summit Records) where he eatures all seven works or solo tuba by Dutch comoser, Jan Koetsier. Dr. orbes has received numerous awards and accolades or his comositions and is regularly commissioned by notable brass artists and band directors. He has won the Dallas Wind Symhony anare Comosition contest numerous times, and his comositions have been given awards o merit by the U.S. Army and, Humboldt rass estival, and the International Tuba-Euhonium Association. He has recently been commissioned by the National and Association o Wisconsin to comose a new work or their 25th State and estival. y l n O w About the Music e i v e r Dance o the Trolls is the resulting work rom a 5-week comosition residency that I was invited to give at Mount Horeb Middle and High schools. The sessions included discussions on the art and technique o comosition as well as an oortunity or the students to try their hand at creating motives. We then maniulated these motives in all kinds o interesting and creative ways (uside-down, backwards, slower, aster, higher, lower, etc.). In the end, I took a ew o these motives develoed by the students and created a iece around them. Mount Horeb is an interesting little suburb outside o Madison, Wisconsin, where I currently reside with my amily. Due to early immigration trends in this area o the country, the town is highly steeed in Norwegian traditions. In act, the main street is reerred to as The Trollway as many o the unique shos there boast wood-carved trolls in their ront yards or storeronts. This comosition is intended to ortray what might haen late at night ater all the tourists and shokeeers have headed o to bed. I musically imagined the mystery o all those troll statuettes (some very small and others quite large and clumsy) getting a drink at the local brewery, The Grumy Troll, then dancing in the streets until sunrise.
