1 Program (MUS) - Music AA.1360 Program Catalog Summary: Associate in Arts: SC Program: AA.1360 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The AA curriculum in Music is designed to provide preparation for either transfer to a CSU or UC as a music major and/or assist in development for a career in music within a variety of music career choices. A few of these career options could be: working in the music industry, music performance, music education, music publishing, musical theater, composition, retail music merchandising, and private music instruction. Additionally the music curriculum creates an opportunity for local amateur and professional musicians to perform within the music department's music performance ensembles (Choirs, Orchestras, Symphonic Bands, and Jazz Ensembles) and/or to advance their music skills. This degree is approved through the California Community College Chancellor s Office. Upon satisfactory completion of all degree requirements and filing an application for graduation with Admissions and Records, the student s transcript will reflect completion of this degree. PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this degree, the student should be able to: 1. Describe major concepts, vocabulary, theoretical perspectives, and creative performance practices of music. 2. Demonstrate ensemble specific performance practices and professional standards of conduct expected of ensemble participants. 3. Perform solo literature with an accompanist (if appropriate) using stylistically accurate rhythm, pitch, diction (or articulation) and musical expression. Included will be performance within formal recital settings. 4. Demonstrate the ability to audiate a musical score by sight singing tonal music and performing rhythms. 5. Demonstrate the ability to recognize and analyze patterns and musical function by aurally identifying and transcribing scales, modes, melodies, and harmonic progressions. 6. Demonstrate keyboard proficiency at the level required to perform theoretical concepts studied in music theory courses. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: Students must complete the Core and Restricted Elective courses. In addition, students fulfill the 37 unit general education pattern for CSU or IGETC. NOTE: Students planning to transfer to National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredited universities to complete a BA degree in Music, in addition to meeting the major requirements shown below, will be required by the transfer institution to show proficiency in the following areas: theory, keyboard skills, vocal skills, music history/appreciation, and applied musicianship. If these graduation requirements are added, the number of units is increased by 6 units. Fall 2016 Prepared By: Full-Time music faculty: Dr. Larry Grandy (area coordinator), Dr. Matthew Brooks, Dr. Elizabeth Waterbury What improvements are needed? : Completed PLO data. Who completed this form?: Full-Time Music Faculty: Dr. Larry Grandy (area coordinator), Dr. Matthew Brooks, Dr. Elizabeth Waterbury Participation in the report: Area Faculty (list in the next box) Summarize Participation comments: This year's Program Review was not able to be fully completed due to the retirement at the end of the 2015/16 academic year of the faculty member responsible for accessing multiple PLOs within several capstone classes used for both the AA in Music and AAT in Music degrees. Therefore updated data was not accessed thus is not available. However, it is the firm belief by the full-time music faculty members that if the retiring faculty member had completed the PLO assessments, the updated data would have proven that both the AA and AAT are immensely successful degrees. Recommendation for Discontinuance?: N/A Analyze Overall PLO achievement: This year's Program Review was not able to be fully completed due to the retirement at the end of the 2015/16 academic year of the faculty member responsible for accessing multiple PLOs within several capstone classes used for both the AA in Music and AAT in Music degrees. Therefore updated data was not accessed thus is not available. However, it is the firm belief by the full-time music faculty members that if the retiring faculty member had completed the PLO assessments, the updated data would have proven that both the AA and AAT are immensely successful degrees. What changes could be (or have been) made to improve the program?: At the end of this academic year (16-17) all the AA and AAT PLOs will be properly assessed and then the department can make a full assessment on any changes that need to be made. Resources needed to implement the changes noted above: Complete PLO data. Other data indications for program improvement: N/A Replicating community college programs north of Sacramento?: Shasta College is one of the few community colleges north of Sacramento offering a full and complete music transfer program including the AAT and the more academically and musically substantial AA degree. CSU and UC Transfer impact analysis:: The music department offers a variety of transfer GE courses and the music major courses are an excellent preparation for the transfer of music majors to the CSU/UC system. Perhaps the most important addition to the music program is the vital Studio Instruction component for all music majors. Influence on related programs and services: N/A Specific additional program reflections: N/A Other factors for consideration: N/A Summary Date: 02/10/2017 Summary of findings: The PRC recommends this program continue with qualification. The program is averaging 4.6 completers 07/25/2017 page 2
3 per year. The last two years the average number of completers has dropped to 3 per year. Since the AA-T was created two years ago, one additional student completed each of the last two years, for a total average of 4 completers a year for the AA and AA-T. All courses within the degree have been offered in the last five years. Success rates for core classes generally average well above 70% with the exception of MUS 10, which is somewhat lower than this over five years. Enrollment appears to have gone from a very healthy 24 students per section in to only 13 per section in However, this appears to be the result of the creation of class families like Music 21A-D, which were created in ; these are taught as stacked sections but are counted as individual sections in Tableau, creating an apparent inefficiency that really just reflects the change in curriculum. As noted in the program review, PLO data and analysis have not been updated since It appears the SLOs for the program have not been mapped to the PLOs, and the PLOs have not been mapped to the ISLOs. It is unclear to the PRC why the AA and AA-T co-exist at this point. If it s a question of adding more classes for practice, the Music Department might consult with the Articulation Officer about the possibility of adding additional recommended units to the AA-T. In accordance with AP 4020, the PRC recommends the program faculty develop a Plan for Improvement no later than the next scheduled program review (Fall 2018). The PRC has these suggestions for improvement: 1) The Music Department should regularly review and assess its PLOs; and 2) the Music Department map all of its SLOs to the PLOs, and the PLOs to the ISLOs. Summary review date: 02/15/2017 Date summary sent to program faculty and/or counselors: 02/23/2017 Program faculty response: The AAT degree in music presupposes a high level of preparation from our incoming students. Our statewide professional community college music association, The Music Association of California Community Colleges (MACCC), recognizes the inherent weakness of all AATs in Music, in that the AATs cannot realistically fully and properly prepare music majors for transfer. MACCC is presently working with the legislature to properly enhance all AATs in Music (hopefully in the near future this will be allowed). However, at this time, the Shasta College AA degree in Music is crafted to provide the training needed by most of our incoming students. Our AA degree closely matches the recommendations from MACCC. Also in the recent past, due to some complications with departed faculty, our PLOs were not assessed or mapped but this omission will be corrected at the end of this academic year and will be fully discussed within the next scheduled Program Review. Date reviewed by College Council: 05/02/2017 College Council response or additional action: College Council acknowledged receipt of the program review and had no further comment at this point. Superintendent/President reponse/additional action: Superintendent/President acknowledged receipt of the program review. 07/25/2017 page 3
