Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 Lesson 1 - Quick Start Multiple Choices for Creating Presentations Topics in this Module: Multiple Choices For Creating Presentations Hassle-Free Presenter View Widescreen Friendly Presentations Inserting Pictures Formatting Pictures Using Artistic Effects Slide Transition Apply Animation Effects Reapply effects with Animation Painter Instead of opening with a blank presentation, PowerPoint 2013 gives you several ways to start your next presentation using a template, a theme, a recent presentation, a not-so-recent presentation, or a blank one. Templates are files designed to be interesting, compelling, and professional-looking documents. All the formatting is complete; you add what you want to them. Examples are resumes, invitations, and newsletters. Your Office programs come with several templates already installed. 1. Click New from the File tab. 2. Click the template that you want to use, and then click Create. A new file opens in the template you ve selected. Note: To select a template that you have created or downloaded to your computer, click My Templates, and then choose your template. Page 2
Hassle-Free Presenter View Microsoft PowerPoint By Default, the slide show is started in Presenter View. To change the view, click More slide show options. 3. Now, if you are working with PowerPoint on a single monitor and you want to display in Slide Show View, on the control bar at the bottom left, click and then click Hide Presenter View. 4. To run the presentation in Presenter view, Click and then click Show Presenter View to start the slide show in Presenter View. Presenter View allows you to see your notes on your monitor while the audience only sees the slide. In previous releases, it was difficult to figure out who saw what on which monitor. The improved Presenter View fixes that headache and makes it simpler to work with. Use Presenter View Presenter View no longer requires multiple monitors. Now you can on one monitor rehearse in Presenter View without hooking up anything else. Zoom in on a slide Click the magnifying glass to zoom in on charts, diagrams, or whatever you want to emphasize for your audience. Jump to a slide Use Slide Navigator to browse to other slides in the presentation. Automatic set up PowerPoint can automatically sense your computer setup and choose the right monitor for Presenter view. You may have had a problem setting up Presenter View in the past but it s vastly improved in PowerPoint Just connect the monitors and PowerPoint automatically sets it up. In Presenter View, you can see your notes as you present, while the audience sees only your slides. Open the file Practice 1.pptx from your exercise files folder. 1. At the bottom of the PowerPoint slide window, click Slide Show View. You can do the following in Presenter View: To 5. Move to the previous or next slide, click Previous or Next. 6. View all the slides in your presentation, click See all slides. Use Page 3 Page 4
7. You ll see thumbnails of all the slides in your presentation, making it easy to jump to a specific slide in the show Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 Widescreen Friendly Presentations 8. View a detail in your slide up close, click Zoom into slide, and then point to the part you want to see. 9. Point to or write on your slides as you present, click Pen and laser pointer tools. 10. To hide or unhide the current slide in your presentation, click Black or unblack slide show. 11. To manually determine which computer will display your notes in Presenter View and which will face the audience (Slide Show View), on the task bar, at the top of Presenter View, click Display Settings, and then click Swap Presenter View and Slide Show. Save and close Practice1.pptx. Much of the world s TVs and video have gone to widescreen and HD formats, and so has PowerPoint. There s a 16:9 layout, and new themes designed to take advantage of widescreen possibilities. To change the slide size from standard to widescreen. Open Practice1.pptx from your exercise files if you have not opened it yet. 1. Click the Design tab, and then click Slide Size. 2. Click Widescreen (16:9). To change the slide size from widescreen to standard, do the following: 1. Click the Design tab, and then click Slide Size. 2. Click Standard (4:3). Page 5 Page 6
Microsoft PowerPoint Right-click the saved theme, and then pick Set as Default Theme. Note When PowerPoint is unable to automatically scale your content, it will prompt you with two options: Maximize Select this option to increase the size of your slide content when you are scaling to a larger slide size. Choosing this option could result in your content not fitting on the slide. Ensure Fit Select this option to decrease the size of your content when scaling to a smaller slide size. This could make your content appear smaller, but you ll be able to see all content on your slide. Note: You can also change your slide size to a custom dimension. To do this, on the Design tab, click Slide Size, and then click Custom Slide Size. In the Slide Size box, set the height and width dimensions, and the orientation. Set 4:3 aspect ratio as the default size for your slides If you want to continue to use the 4:3 aspect ratio, you can set it as your default slide size. 1. With the 4:3 aspect ratio applied to your slides, on the Design tab, in the Themes group, click More, then click Save Current Theme. Inserting Pictures You can insert pictures and clip art into Excel worksheets, messages, PowerPoint presentations, Publisher publications, and Word documents. 1. Click where you want to place your image. If you're in Outlook, click in the body of a message. 2. Click Insert, and then click Pictures on My PC. 3. Use the Insert Picture dialog box to locate your picture or clip art, and then click Insert. Formatting Pictures You can apply a picture style a combination of formatting options to make your image stand out. You find the styles in the Picture Styles gallery on the Format tab. When you hover over a style, your image changes to show you how the style will look. 2. In the File name box, enter the name of the theme, and then click Save. 1. Click the image you want to apply a picture style to. 2. On the Format tab, click a Picture Style. Page 7 Page 8
If you don't see the Format tab, make sure you've selected the image. To see more Picture Styles, click the More button Button image. Using Artistic Effects You can apply artistic effects to a picture or a picture fill to make the picture look more like a sketch, drawing, or painting. You can apply only one artistic effect at a time to a picture, so applying a different artistic effect will remove the previously applied artistic effect. 1. Click the picture that you want to apply an artistic effect to. 2. Click Picture Tools > Format > Adjust > Artistic Effects. Microsoft PowerPoint On the Transitions tab, find the effect that you want in the Transition gallery. Click the More button Button image to see the entire gallery. Click the effect that you want for that slide and to see a preview. 2. Click Transitions > Effect Options to change how the transition occurs for example, what direction the slide enters from. 3. Enter a time at Duration to set how fast the transition goes. Set the number higher to make the transition go slower. For more about transition timing, see Set the speed and timing of transitions. 4. Click Preview to see what the transition looks like with all the settings. Apply Animation Effects Animating bullets or objects (such as pictures, shapes, SmartArt, and more) on your slide can be a great way to grab your audience s attention, and in PowerPoint 2013 you can animate just about anything. 3. Click the artistic effect that you want. You can move your mouse pointer over any of the effects, and use Live Preview to see what your picture will look like with that effect applied, before you click the one that you want. 4. To fine tune the artistic effect, click Artistic Effects Options. Slide Transition Slides that snap from one to the next can be jarring to an audience. If you want the pace of your presentation to feel more controlled and flowing, add transitions between slides. Everything you need is on the Transitions tab. 1. Select the object or text on the slide that you want to animate. 2. On the Animations tab, click Add Animation, and pick an animation effect. Page 9 Page 10
Reapply effects with Animation Painter If you have many objects that you want to animate in a presentation, applying animation to each one might be a laborious task. Use Animation Painter in PowerPoint 2013 to apply animation effects and characteristics uniformly to other objects with one click. 1. Select the object you have animated. 2. In the Advanced Animation group of the Animations Ribbon tab, click the Animation Painter button. 3. Click the object you want to apply the animation to. Page 11
