Introduction Terminology Inheritance of Connection Situations The Construction Principle The Connection Situation Connection and Connection Type Connection Connection Type Automatic Assignment of a Connector Set Direct Assignment of a Connector Set Linear Division/ Descriptor Additional Filter The Connector Set The Connector of the Connector Set The Characteristics of the Connector Set The Connection Scan Basic Functioning of the Connection Scan Manual Call of the Connection Scan The Additional Filter Additional Filter 1 in the Connection of the Type Cam Connection Additional Filter 1 in 2 Connector Sets of the Type Cam Connection The Result in the Connection Scan The Connector Where are Connection Situations entered? In the Construction Principle In the Part Definition Edge Connection Machining In Stretchable Purchased Parts (SPP) In Pulls and Locks In the Drawer Manager In the imos Manager Ribbon menu of Part Designer Tab Methods -> Free Construction Methods -> 2 selected parts Article Designer B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 2 / 30
1. Introduction Objective of these exercises Compliance of the terminology Understanding the inheritance logic Understanding the Connections of the involved data objects Understanding the effect of the Connection Scan The abbreviations used CP Construction principles C-Scan Connection Scan _C_ 3-Point-Button Set in the name of data objects instead of _C_ e.g. M_ for Miller to mark the data object as your own. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 3 / 30
2. Terminology Construction Principle is assigned to an article and contains the constructive characteristics as well as the PD and the Connection Situation. Connection Situation is stored in the CP and contains the Connection(s). Connection is stored in the Connection Situation. Contains the Connection type, and further characteristics for controlling the assignment of Connector Sets. Connection Type is stored in the Connection. All Connection Types are also displayed as folders in the Element Manager. They inherit a composition of characteristics on the Connection and on the Connector Sets which supports the automatic determination of Connector Sets with the Connection Scan. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 4 / 30
Connection Scan analyses a construction and finds with the comparison of characteristic values in the Connections and the Connector Sets suitable Connector Sets. Direct Assignment Connector Set alternative to the Connection Scan a Connector Set can be directly assigned (see picture under Connector Set). contains single connectors. Every Connector Set is exactly assigned to a Connection Type and contains the characteristics of this Connection Type. Connector is assigned to a Connector Set and contains information to the single connector such as work groups and the DWG (Drawing) of the connector. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 5 / 30
3. Inheritance of Connection Situations Connection Situations are inherited from one part on to another part. The inheritance logic in the cabinet construction about CPs is explained in the following graphic. Top-/ Bottom Shelves inherit to exterior panels. As far as a top-/ bottom shelf butts on an onset divider, the top-/ bottom shelf inherit to the divider as well. Dividers inherit to top-/ bottom shelf if the top-/ bottom shelf is onset. Furthermore, top-/ bottom shelf inherit to fixed shelves Fixed- and Adjustable Shelves inherit to exterior panels and dividers. Of course, there are numerous other places where Connection Situations can be entered to inherit their properties on another part. However, for getting to know the structures this example is sufficient. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 6 / 30
4. The Construction Principle CPs are applied to set up an article in the Article Designer. Characteristics and their values for the constructive aspects of top shelves, side panels, bottom shelves etc. are stored in CP. The following example explains the structure of connector data and the effect of the Connection Scan. Create the displayed article above with an onset top shelf CP_TSO_2202_DC_Rv00mm and a side panel without lineboring CP_SP_2000. Since Connection Situations are inherited to side panels, let us just take a closer look at the CP of the Top Shelf. Hint No Connection Situation can be entered in the CPs of Sides Panels. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 7 / 30
In the CP are the following constructive properties. Definition contains the PD Construction contains information on the construction Connector contains the Connection Situation(s) The Connection Situation is stored in the node Connector. In this CP is the Connection Situation i_dowel_cam_fitting. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 8 / 30
5. The Connection Situation Connection Situation: i_dowel_cam_fitting The Connection Situation i_dowel_cam_fitting is entered in the Top Shelf-CP. The contents of the Connection Situation appear via the 3-Point-Button. A Connection Situation contains the Connections which are necessary to connect a CP with the parts on which the Connection Situation is inherited. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 9 / 30
The Connection Situation itself has no own characteristics and characteristic definitions except for the snap radius. It is rather seen as a Container, in which one or several Connections are stored. In this example the Connection Situation i_dowel_cam_fitting contains 2 Connections: 1. Dowel 2. Cam Connections 6. Connection and Connection Type 6.1 Connection The Connections are in the Connection Situation. Connections contain a series of characteristics and characteristic values. Via these characteristics and characteristic values the Connection Scan automatically finds several suitable Connector Sets. Additionally, the positioning of the connector referring to the involved parts is controlled. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 10 / 30

6.2 Connection Type Connection type Connection in Connection Situation B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 12 / 30
6.3 Automatic Assignment of a Connector Set In the characteristics of the Connection is controllable if the Connection Scan is used for a Connection or not. If Type of Connection (Connection Scan) is selected with Definition via, then the Connection Scan for this Connection is executed, automatically determines the suitable Connector Set and inserts the Connector Set which has the highest value in the Counter. All Connector Sets in the delivery data have the same value in the Counter. The value in the Counter is respectively increased by 1 if a Connector Set is manually assigned in the C-Scan and replaces an automatically assigned Connector Set. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 13 / 30
6.4 Direct Assignment of a Connector Set If the Direct Selection is selected with Definition via, then the suitable Connector Set must be directly assigned. In this case it is not possible to check if the assigned Connector Set is constructively correct. Via the 3-Point-Button the Connector Sets appear to choose and assign the suitable Connector Set out of it. The screenshot shows clearly how the selection of the Connection Type defines the folder where a Connector Set can be selected. In this case the folder Cam Connection, because the Connection Type Cam Connection, is entered in the Connection. 6.5 Linear Division/ Descriptor In the Connection a linear division or a descriptor is stored. The linear division is known from previous exercises. The linear division is for the number and the allocation of Connector Sets. A Descriptor is a collection of several linear divisions, which are applied under certain conditions (also in the Descriptor). 6.6 Additional Filter A special characteristic in the node Characteristics of the Connection is the Additional Filter. The different Connection Types offer 2-4 additional filters. A detailed explanation to Additional Filter is in Chapter The Connection Scan. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 14 / 30
7. The Connector Set The Connector Set contains one or more connectors as well as characteristics and characteristic values which are provided by the Connection Type (which the Connector Set belongs to). A Connector Set is either automatically determined by the Connection Scan or set in the Connection by direct assignment. Connector Set: i_ex_15_18 Connector Set: i_dowel_05x25 B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 15 / 30
The Connection Situation in our exercise (i_dowel_cam_fitting) knows 2 Connections. Name: Dowel with the Connection Type: Dowel Connection Name: Cam Connection with the Connection Type: Cam Connection In the folder Dowel_Connection are the Connector Sets of the Connection Type Dowel Connection (Screenshot bottom left). In the folder Cam_Connection are the Connector Sets of the Connection Type Cam Connection (Screenshot bottom left). B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 16 / 30
7.1 The Connector of the Connector Set Every Connector Set is assigned to one or several connectors. The Connector Sets for the Dowel only contain 1 dowel as connector. The Connector Sets for the Cam usually contain the Cam and screw-in dowel. Some Cam- Connector Sets even contain end caps and if necessary further connectors. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 17 / 30
7.2 The Characteristics of the Connector Set In addition the Connector Set contains characteristics as well. Since the characteristics are provided by the Connection Type, they are exactly the same characteristic as in the Connection. Unlike in the Connection, the values to the characteristics are entered in the Connector Set for which this Connector Set is constructively approved. In the picture below is a Cam-Connector Set, which can be applied for a corner Connection with an inset part (Thickness 18mm 25mm) and onset part (Thickness 16mm 30mm). The interior angle must be 90. This Connector Set, being on the basis of the characteristic definitions, is valid for the insertion in our article. Now you know all about data objects of the Connection structure which enable the Connection Scan to automatically determine a correct Connector Set. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 18 / 30
8. The Connection Scan 8.1 Basic Functioning of the Connection Scan The functioning of the Connection Scan is as follows: Read the Connection (in the Connection Situation) Fill the characteristic values of the Connection with the values from the construction Compare the characteristic values out of the Connection with the characteristic values of the Connector Sets The Connector Sets, which are identical with the characteristic values of the Connection, are seen technically acceptable by the Connection Scan The Connector Set, which has the highest value in the Counter under the acceptable Connector Set, is automatically inserted by the Connection Scan. This process runs when leaving the Article Designer each time (with the green checkmark) and/ or after calling the function Refresh Article, provided that the article contains Connection Situations with Connections in which the Connection Scan is activated. All Connector Sets in the delivery data have the same value in the Counter. The value in the Counter is respectively increased by 1 if a Connector Set is manually assigned in the C-Scan and replaces an automatically assigned Connector Set. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 19 / 30
8.2 Manual Call of the Connection Scan Select the article in the imos Manager. Afterwards start the Connection Scan by double clicking once on Connection Scan in the method window. The Connection Scan shows the two applied Connections Dowel and Cam Connection as well as the selection of the Connector Sets made by the Connection Scan next to a graphic of the involved parts on the left side of the window. On the right side of the window all other acceptable Connector Sets are displayed. The user can select one of these Connector Sets by clicking on the respective picture for this Connection. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 20 / 30
8.3 The Additional Filter Every Connection and therefore every Connector Set have 2-4 additional filters. With these additional filters the result of the Connection Scan can be limited, for example, on the Connector Sets. The reason for this is that the Connection Scan identifies many Connector Sets as technical acceptable when downloading the connector data packet. However, the customer usually only inserts a small number of the available Connector Sets. To find only those Connector Sets via the Connection Scan, which you want to insert as a customer, proceed as follows. Set the value for the Additional Filter 1 in the Connection e.g. on _Customer. Set the value for the Additional Filter 1 in the Connector Set _Customer as well. Now the Connection Scan compares the characteristic values (which contain yes _Customer in the characteristic Additional Filter 1) with the characteristic values of the Connector Set. In this case the Connection Scan will only accept the Connector Sets entered with the value _Customer in the Additional Filter 1. Just try it out by providing the Connections and Connector Sets with an additional filter Additional Filter 1 in the Connection of the Type Cam Connection B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 21 / 30
8.3.2 Additional Filter 1 in 2 Connector Sets of the Type Cam Connection B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 22 / 30
8.3.3 The Result in the Connection Scan The Connection Scan delivers exclusively Connector Sets with the entry _Customer in the Additional Filter 1. All other Connector Sets even if they are constructively suitable, are not accepted by the Connection Scan, because they do not meet this condition. B_19 Training CAD/ Connector; Structure of the Connector Data 23 / 30
9. The Connector The connectors are virtually the last data object of the connector structure. They contain the machining to be executed in the form of work groups the DWG of the single connector for visualizing in the drawing assignment of work groups to parts positioning information for machining and DWG characteristics and values which describe mutual dependencies of the connectors part list information pictures (jpg) of the connectors Connector: i_screw_in_dowel_0429 Connector: i_cam_fitting_18_0428 Connector: i_dowel_05x25 The data content of the connector are practiced in another separate exercise!
