1 ECT 357: Microprocessors I Xilinx ISE WebPACK 12.4 Installation Instructions 1. Go to the Xilinx website and select the Full Installer for Windows option for Version 12.4 of the ISE design suite as shown in Figure 1. a. You will need to createa a user account with Xilinx if you have not already created one and input your username and password when prompeted to start the download process b. The download manager will open (typically in a new window) and you will be prompted to enter the location you wish to save the downloaded file. Note that the Xilinx ISE WebPACK installation is downloaded as a single compressed file. Figure 1: Website for Xilinx ISE WebPACK download

2 2. The compressed downloaded file (Xilinx_ISE_DS_Win_12.4_M.81d.2.0.tar) needs to be extracted. 3. Within the extracted folder (Xilinx_ISE_DS_Win_12.4_M.81d.2.0) you will need to run the xsetup.exe application which will open the ISE Design Suite 12.4 Installer window shown in Figure 2. Press the Next button to continue. 4. Accept the license agreement from Xilinx as shown in Figures 3 and 4 and press the Next buttons to continue. Failure to accept the license agreement will result in the canceling of the installation process. a. Note that even though this is a free software application provided by Xilinx, it is licensed software and you are not allowed to redistribute this application. The other installations are not free and require the purchase of a software license from Xilinx. Select the Next button to continue. Figure 5: Select the WebPACK installation 6. Use the default installation options as shown in Figure 6 and the default installation directory as shown in Figure 7. To ensure that the Xilinx WebPACK software functions correctly, it is important to ensure that there are no spaces in the installation path. Select the Next button to continue. a. The directories where the created Xilinx WebPACK project are stored must also not contain any spaces in their names.

Make sure that the ISE WebPACK edition is being installed into the default directory (without any spaces in the path name). Select the Install button to start the installation process. a. The Xilinx PlanAhead analysis tool and Xilinx EDK toolset will also be installed during this installation process.

The installation process will take several minutes and will be shown in the installer window as shown in Figure 9 (if the installation process looks like it is stopped for a couple minutes, do not abort... just wait). 9. When the installation process is complete, an Install Complete message will be displayed as shown in Figure 10. Select the Finish button to complete the installation process. a. This window is sometimes hidden behind the new dialogue window shown in Figure 11 which is asking about where to get the license file. Figure 9: Xilinx WebPACK installer progress window

6 Figure 10: Final Xilinx installer window 10. A new dialogue window opens asking about the type of license file needed. Be sure to select to acquire a Free ISE WebPACK License. Note that to obtain a valid license file, internet access is required. Select the Next button to continue. 11. Another dialogue window will appear, shown in Figure 12, asking when the user wishes to connect to the Xilinx license server. Select the Connect Now button to obtain the license file now, or select the Save Information button to only store the computer information now and obtain the license file the next time the Xilinx ISE WebPACK application is started. If the Connect Now button is selected (Figure 12) then a new window will open in the default web browser loaded with the Xilinx.com licensing website. Use your username and password to enter the licensing site and obtain a license file. a. The license file will be ed to you. b. Save the license file to your desktop. Figure 13: Xilinx licensing website 13. From the Xilinx Configuration Manager window, select the Copy License... option and select your ed license file and the open button as shown in Figure 14.

Once the license file has been opened and read, you should get the message shown in Figure 15 and the Xilinx Configuration Manager window should appear similar to the one shown in Figure 16. Select to close the window to complete the installation and licensing of the Xilinx ISE WebPACK 12.4 application. Figure 15: Notification that license file insertion was successful

It is best to create a new directory on the C drive to hold only the associated project material for this class (be sure to use no spaces in the file path name). 16. Start the Xilinx ISE WebPACK application to verify that it opens and the license file is found. 17. Device programming of the Spartan 3e FPGA on the Digilent BASYS2 development board is accomplished using the Digilent Adept tool. a. Download the Adept System or later version from the Digilent website ( b. Install the ADEPT tool using the default configuration settings. c. Connect the BASYS2 development board to the computer using the provided USB cable and follow the Windows instructions for installing the device driver (BASYS2 board must be turned on). d. Once the device drivers have been successfully installed, start the ADEPT tool by going to Start All Programs Digilent Adept Adept. The ADEPT dialog window should look like the one shown in Figure 17 with both the Spartan 3e FPGA (XC3S100E) and the configuration PROM (XCF02S) devices located.
