Download License Management Tools Utilities 32-bit/64-bit Windows. This tool is needed to find hostid for registration. Register for a free 30-day evaluation license. Step 2: Install MATLAB version 2011a, 2011b, 2012a, or MATLAB 2012b. Select MATLAB and Simulink packages. They are required for Xilinx System Generator. Only these versions of MATLAB are confirmed compatible with Xilinx version Step 3: Run (As Administrator) program Xilinx_ISE_DS_Win_14.4_P.49d.3.0\xsetup.exe. 7 Figure 11: Install completed screen. Step 4: Click Start menu Programs Xilinx Design Tools ISE Design Suite 14.4 Accessories. Then click Manage Xilinx Licenses tab. Click Copy License and select a license file obtained in Step 1. Figure 12: Enter a valid license click Set. 8 Click OK to overwrite if a file or folder already exists. Create a short-cut on the Windows Desktop for the following link: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Xilinx Design Tools\ISE Design Suite 14.4\System Generator\System Generator - Modify the link to start in folder: C:\ECTE433 Testing the installation 1. Start MATLAB by clicking: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Xilinx Design Tools\ISE Design Suite 14.4\System Generator\System Generator 2. Open Simulink file test\ ud_counter.mdl Figure 13: An example model in Simulink. 3. Click start button ( ) to simulate. We should obtain simulation outputs as shown in Figure 17. 9 4. Double-click System Generator block (see Figure 18). In the dialog box, click Generate. Figure 15: Generate ISE file project. 5. In folder test\ise, double-click file ud_counter_cw.xise. In the ISE Navigator, select ud_counter_cw structural, in the Processes, click Generate Programming File A file ud_counter_cw.bit will be generated in folder test\ise Lam Phung Page 9

10 Figure 16: Generate programming file ud_counter_cw. 6. Connect Spartan 3E board to PC using USB cable. Power it on. The Xilinx USB drivers will install automatically. 7. When asked about assigning configuration files, click No. Click Cancel on a window that pops up. 8. Right-click xs3s500e block and select Assign New Configuration File.
