1 Introduction to NIDAS users procedure 1. Click on the NIDAS icon to start NIDAS. 2. Click on the add new Project Area button to create a new project Area. 3. In the Project Area window perform the following: a. In the Project Area Line enter any name you desire to call your project area. b. In the Area Desc (Description) enter the name of the area (i.e. Yellow Sea Region). c. The Creator and Date lines are created by default by the software. d. On the project line enter the name you chose for your project. 1

2 e. In the Class line enter 0. f. For Boundary Info enter the Latitudes and Longitudes of the project area you wish to create. g. Click the ADD button to create the project area. 2. Click the create a new data set button to create a data set for the new project area. 3. In the Data Set window perform the following: 2

3 a. In the Data Set line enter the data type (i.e. MODAS, MOODS, or GDEM). b. In the Data type button select LLT. c. The Creator and Date lines are created by default by the software. d. In the Class line enter 0. e. In the Desc line enter the description of the data (i.e. Yellow Sea MODAS fields). f. In the LLT Data Info Box enter the following; i. In the +/- line enter 1 for MODAS and GDEM and 16 for MOODS. ii. In the line enter 0. iii. In the + line enter 0. iv. Check the ls Location and ls Profile boxes. v. In the Color 1 button select the desired color for your first data filed. Repeat for Color 2 and 3. vi. In the PolyColor 1 button select the desired color for your first Polygon. Repeat for PolyColor 2 and Click the ADD button to create the new data set. 5. Click the Data ingest button to ingest data into the new data set. 6. In the Data window perform the following: 3

4 a. Click the Filename button and select the data, that is in the master format, that you which to ingest from the directory it is located. b. In the Version Name line enter a file name that best describes the date of the data (i.e ). 7. Click the ADD button to ingest the new data. 8. Click the analysis window button to open the analysis window and Region window. 9. In the analysis window Select the New Window button to select the windows you wish to open (i.e. TVD, SVD, SSDVD). 4

5 10. Click the Tools button to open up the tools window. 11. Click the Data button and select Read Data to read data in the analysis window. 12. In the Read Data window perform the following: a. Click the button on the upper left hand corner and select LLT and click the button next to it and select the data set that contains the data file you want to read in the analysis window. b. In the version box scroll down to the desired data file and select it by clicking the Read button. 5

6 13. The data file name should show up in the analysis window. Check the box next to the file name by clicking it. The data will now be read into the Region window and the other windows you have selected. 6

7 14. If you want to overlay other data files in the analysis window for comparison, repeat steps 11 through 13 for the desired data files. For example and overlay of the MODAS fields and February MOODS fields is presented below: 15. To change the color of a data set and its polygon right click on the desired data file in the analysis window and select options and the data options window will come up. Change the colors as performed for the creation of the Data Sets. 7

8 16. Next, in the Tools window click the polygon button to create a polygon of a specific area of interest. 17. Move the cursor over the region and right click on at least three desired locations to create a polygon of an area. Click the center mouse button to select the polygon. The selected polygon as well as the corresponding profiles in the other windows should change in color to the selected polygon colors. 18. To edit and export the profiles in the created polygons perform the following: a. In the Tools window click on the Profile Isolation button to bring up the Polygon Subset window. b. Click on the Current Datasets button to select the desired dataset. c. To edit datasets that require editing like MOODS datasets for example, select single in the Selection Policy box and scroll through the data files while observing the individual profiles that are highlighted in a 8

9 different color as they are selected. When you come to an erroneous profile as the one highlighted in blues as shown below in the sound speed vs. depth plot, click the delete button in the Polygon Subset window to remove the profile from your selected data set. Repeat the procedure until all of the erroneous profiles are removed. 9

10 d. To save the data set you created click the Export button to bring up the Export Data window. e. In the Header box enter the desired title for export file, select the on/off box and select CASTAR in the File Type box. f. Click the export button and a window will come up telling the user where the file has been saved. g. Repeat steps b through f for any other data sets that were selected in the created Polygon. 19. The export files created can be used in various acoustic models such as CASTAR and CASS/GRAB. 20.
