I know first-hand because I have attended many meetings and also was the main presenter a few years ago!

In addition to being a Mac user, I am presently on my third iphone, second ipad, first Apple Watch and also extensively use Apple TV and Car Play.

In addition to the above, this year I have added Photos for Mac, a class that Joyce has taught the past few years.

Over the past 13 years Joyce Kloncz created, built and nurtured the Apple Special Interest Group (SIG) into the largest and arguably, the most interesting SIG in the Computers Club. I know first-hand because I have attended many meetings and also was the main presenter a few years ago! A little about me and the Computers Club: First I was Vice President in , then President in Presently as the Past President, I serve on the Executive Board of the Club. In addition to being a Mac user, I am presently on my third iphone, second ipad, first Apple Watch and also extensively use Apple TV and Car Play. For the past few years I have taught ipad/iphone: I Own One Now What, itunes/apple Music and ipad/iphone How to Buy One (also named Entering the Big Apple for Grand Learning). In addition to the above, this year I have added Photos for Mac, a class that Joyce has taught the past few years. You ll also find me at Tech Help every Tuesday afternoon and most recently, as facilitator of the Devices SIG. Fortunately, Gale McCall, who has ably assisted Joyce has agreed to remain as assistant facilitator and many other members of the Mac community have also agreed to pitch in beginning with Geoff Buxton, who will be explaining and demonstrating the Keynote program at our first meeting of the season on October 15, 3:30pm, note earlier time, in the Hopi Room, Chaparral Center. In summary, it is now my responsibility to preserve and grow this group and I look forward to the challenge and of course, your support. 2 Apple SIG Classes for Fall Page 2 As we go to press, the class schedule is not yet available, it will be posted on the grandcomputers.org website some time today (October 1). However, what follows are the relevant Apple oriented classes that will be taught this Fall. For a complete list, please visit the Education page of the website. For NOVICE with no computer skills. Mac Basic Beginning Computer Skills - no basic skills needed. An introduction to become comfortable using the computer. For BEGINNERS who have very little Mac experience and those who took the Mac Basic Beginning Computer Skills, the recommended sequence of beginner courses is as follows: Mac 1: Introduction to the Mac - This class is designed not only for people who are new Mac users, but also for those Mac users who want a more in-depth introduction to the many aspects of the Mac operating system. Mac 2: Mac Features - Learn about some of the basic and new features of the High Sierra operating system. See how the Mac is becoming more like an ipad. Mac 3: Utilizing the Finder - You will learn how to organize data files and folders on your Mac using the Finder. Mac 4: Customize Your Mac - This class will show you how to change the way your Mac looks and acts to better serve you, the user. PRODUCTIVITY: for those who are proficient with a mouse and familiar with menus and text entry, the following courses teach or review frequently used computer skills. Calendar for Mac - Manage your personal calendar on a Mac Contacts for Mac - Learn how to manage your contacts in Apple s Contacts software. Mail for Mac - Learn show to perform operations using the Mac Mail program. Numbers for Mac Learn basic spreadsheet skills with Apple s Numbers software. Pages 1 - Learn word processing basics with Apple s Pages software. Pages 2 - Work with Pages templates to make professional-looking documents: newsletters, envelopes, brochures, flyers, posters, etc. Keynote for Mac - Learn to make presentations and slide shows with Apple s Keynote software. Photos for Mac - Learn how to do more with your photos using Apple s Photos on High Sierra OS. MAC OS Mohave is Now Available Enjoy reading lots of words about new operating systems? Good news! There are plenty of those here. Enjoy actually downloading and running said new operating systems? Gooder news! macos Mojave is now available in final public form over at the Mac App Store. As with the last several versions of the desktop OS, Mojave s a free download though every time the company launches a new one, there tends to be a bit of a bottleneck with downloads, so you may want to give this one a bit of time before attempting. As far as what you ve got to look forward to on the this new version, Dark Mode is the biggest marquee feature here. Mojave oﬀers the ability to switch windows and backgrounds to a dark design with light text which, like many of the OS s new features, is targeted at the company s core audience of creative pros. Stacks is probably my personal favorite of the bunch. With a click of a button, it cleans your ridiculously messy desktop into piles of files sortable by type and various other categories. The first batch of ios apps have been ported to the desktop here, as well, including Voice Memos, Stocks, Home and News. Screenshots have been pretty thoroughly tweaked, while Safari s got a bunch of new security features.

Apple's latest update to ios is here, and it's full of new features. The update is available now for the iphone, ipad and ipod Touch. For those with a shiny new iphone XS or iphone XS Max, ios 12 comes preinstalled. Apple also recently released ios 12.1 through its beta program, which brings back Group FaceTime. Included in ios 12 is a new Memoji feature, improved handling of notifications, a revamped Do Not Disturb feature and a Measure app. Apple also added new parental controls for those who want to keep a child's device locked down. Right now. Apple released its ios 12 update on Monday, Sept. 17. Update your iphone or ipad to ios 12 right now. Device compatibility If your iphone, ipad or ipod Touch runs ios 11, it will run ios 12. That means all iphones starting from the iphone 5S onward. That's the short answer, but we also have a more detailed answer right here. Smoother and faster The headlining feature of ios 12 isn't something we can explain through screenshots. It's something you have to experience on your own. Instead of cramming countless new features into ios 12 and adding to some of the already perplexing (and frustrating!) bugs we all experience, Apple is using ios 12 to focus on improving the overall performance of its ios device lineup across the board. Apps should open faster, scrolling should be smoother, and crashes should be fewer. Best new features Siri gets smarter, but you'll work harder -- at first. Siri Shortcuts are tasks you can create and trigger with a custom command to do things like send a text, play a podcast and get directions to your favorite ice cream shop. Cut down on screen time: New tools in ios 12 show you how often you pick up your phone, how many notifications you receive, and how much time you spend using various apps. Trust us: It's scary to see hard numbers for how long you spend on your phone. Better notification management: One of the main reasons we reach for our phones so often is the sheer number of alerts we receive. ios 12 has new tools to cut back on unnecessary alerts. Minor tweaks to Messages, but a big change to FaceTime: After a couple years of adding a lot to the Messages app, the biggest change this year is a new camera tool. FaceTime was supposed to add group calls for up to 32 people, but Apple decided to remove the feature from ios 12 for the time being. We should still see group FaceTime later this year, though.

5 Apple SIG Page 5 ios 12 is now available (continued) Create an Animoji of your own: Memoji is a word you're going to hear a lot this fall. A Memoji is an animated emoji iphone X users can create and use just like last year's Animoji characters. Closing apps goes old school: Apple changed the process of force-closing apps on the iphone X, adding in extra steps. With ios 12, things are getting back to normal. You have a built-in tape measure: Need to measure a table or some other object? Apple is adding a new app, Measure, in ios 12. The app uses augmented reality to measure real-world objects. It's pretty cool. Tips for New Purchase There are several things you need to do before starting to use. your new machine. There are others that you personally like to change. I am focusing on changes that we all should do for security and convenience. They are all in System Preferences. General Show scroll bars - Always Security Firewall - On My new imac did not have it on (important security feature). Notifications Do not disturb - put in the hours you do not want to hear the computer s notifications. Mouse Secondary click - on This will allow the mouse to implement a right click without the control key. Bluetooth Show bluetooth in the menu bar - on (check box front of show). This will allow you to go to the menu bar and find the bluetooth symbol. The drop down menu will have the mouse and keyboard.on it. Select either to see how much charge is left. The mouse is impossible to use when charging. Accessibility Cursor size - use slider to increase the cursor size to your liking. Thanks to Geoff Buxton for these tips.
