1 Scratch Photo-face This project was designed to introduce Scratch in a way to bring the student/youth/adult into their work. One of the ideas that is integrated into the Scratch program is that is a tool for expression that Scratch helps the learner to transform or mediate their personal experiences using computer programming. With the Photo-face project learners can incorporate digital media digital photos, and then transform these images in creative and surprising ways. This activity was developed in Scratch on computers with built-in webcams. For this outline we used Apple laptops and a built-in software program to capture the image. On a PC you can use free software such as Picasa to import and edit images for use in a Scratch project. ( You do not need a computer with a webcam. You can substitute and import a digital camera photo as well. The new version of Scratch, 1.4 includes a new function that lets you import an image directly through the Scratch program rather than using another program to capture and save images.

2 1) Using either a digital camera or if you have a computer with a built-in camera, take a photo of your face and save it to the desktop of your computer If you have a imac or Mac laptop you can use Photobooth, an application that comes with Macs and use the program to snap an image of your whole face Once you have an photo you like, click on the icon and drag it to your desktop. So, once you have an image of yourself saved as a file, either using a camera or a built- in webcam, start the Scratch program. 2) This will create a new blank project (with the cat sprite on the stage). We re going to make our own characters, so with your mouse, right-click (or on a Mac control-

3 click ) on the cat. This brings up a window click delete to remove this sprite. 3) click on the stage and Backgrounds tab and then 4) You ll see a new window, and on the left some buttons: click the username, then desktop folder to open the desktop where your image is you ll see a thumbnail of the image. Click it to import it. 5) You should have an image of you filling the background 6) Using a mouse (or track pad) right-click (Macs control-click) on background and this puts up make new sprite cross-hairs

4 7) drag cross-hairs over one eye this creates a new sprite 8) futz around with new sprite of the eye to line it up over the original eye. 9) Click on scripts tab then next window over click on looks button then drag out the change size by # block 10) double-click on block repeatedly ( the eye sprite gets bigger) 11) To reset the eye sprite to the original size, drag out the set size to #% block. (make sure its 100%) and double-click 12) Build this script: click control button, find the repeat block and drag this out. Drag the change size by # into the repeat block ( this block should open up and when you see a white line glue the block should get pulled into the repeat Double-click on the repeat To reset the size, double-click the set size to 100% 13) Now copy this script by right-clicking (control-click on Macs) on the repeat block to copy the whole block 14) Move this block and snap it under the first repeat. 15) Change the change size by # to a negative number of the same amount 16) Click the scripts Control tab, drag out a Forever block, move it near the repeat script and will open up around the other blocks 17) Click the Control button, and drag out a green-flag block. Snap this on top of the repeat blocks

5 18) Find the green flag button (near the Stop button) and click it. The eye should grow and shrink! Now you can do the same thing to the other eye, nose and mouth
