4 General Security Policy It is a violation of Baylor University policy for a Banner user to give anyone their Banner Username and password for any reason. Acknowledgements Central Connecticut State University Marshall University George Washington University Accessing Banner Open a web browser In the Address field, type: Press Enter When the Java Window opens, a blank Banner 8 browser window (see below) will remain open Do not close this window. 5 When the Logon screen is displayed, enter the Banner Username. Enter the Password Do not enter the Database Click Connect Getting_Started.doc 12/21/09 Page 5 of 18

6 Exiting Banner Ctrl / Q (Hold down the Control and Q keys simultaneously) Click Yes Note: The user will need to exit each open form before exiting Banner. Exit may need to be clicked several times. Banner Security Time Out To enhance system security, Banner users who have been inactive for ninety minutes will be automatically logged out of Banner. However, Banner users should lock their computers when they are called away from them. Press the Control, Alternate and Delete keys simultaneously (Ctrl / Alt / Delete) and then click Lock Computer. Users can also set up their screen savers to Lock the computer. 7 Using the Banner Menu Double Click My Banner to see the personal menu Double-click on one of the options from the My Banner menu to open that form Getting_Started.doc 12/21/09 Page 7 of 18 Or Double-click a menu or sub-menu description to see the contents of the menu Double-click an open folder to close a menu or sub-menu Open a form by double-clicking on the form description OR Enter a form name in the Go: box Press Enter Click Search for Object to search for a form name.

8 Anatomy of a Banner Form SPAIDEN -- The Student Identification Form (Student System) Previous versions of the Banner Software contained an Options window to provide paths to other parts of the form or other forms on Banner. These Options can now be accesses using Tabs across the top of the form or the Options menu Getting_Started.doc 12/21/09 Page 8 of 18

10 A banner form is made up of the following parts: The Menu Bar B A Y L O R Click on the word to access the menu. All toolbar options are also available through the menu. The Horizontal Toolbar Button Name Description Save/ Commit / Accept Rollback Save changes to the database Application and inquiry forms Clears all information and returns cursor to the first field in the key information area. Validation forms Returns cursor to the first field on the form. Query forms Returns cursor to the first field on the calling form. Select (Exit with Value) Insert Record Returns cursor to the calling form and enters the selected value into the field that called the form Add a blank record to a list of records Delete Record Remove the information for a record. 12 The Options Menu The Options Menu opens forms related to the information on the current form The Title Bar The Banner Icon Form Description Database Minimize Window Restore Window Click here for a menu of options Description of Current Form Current Database PROD8 Production PPRD8 Pre-production testing SEED8 Generic Database Remove the current window from the screen. It can still be accessed through the status bar. Return window to its original size The Key Block Close Form Use the Exit Button on the toolbar ( ) instead This area of the form holds the Key information for the records being viewed. 13 The Information Block(s) These areas hold the rest of the information for the records being viewed. Information blocks allow the user to view and change information on the database. Click on a Tab to go to a different block within the form Some fields are searchable. Click the Search button ( ) by the State or Province field to see the valid options. 14 The Auto Hint/Status Bar The first line of this area is the Auto Hint area and gives a short description of the field where the cursor is located. Note: Error messages will appear here, so it is important to look here when encountering problems on the system. When an error occurs, press Shift / F1 (the F1 key and the Shift key simultaneously) to get a longer description of the error message. The second line of this area is the status line and contains one of the following values: Record n/n List of Values Enter-Query Shows the number of record being displayed and the total number of records Indicates the field has a List of Values Indicates the form is in query mode Getting_Started.doc 12/21/09 Page 14 of 18

15 Anatomy of Banner Form Names Each Banner form is identified by a seven-character name. Each character in the name describes something about the form. First Character The first character specifies which product uses the form.
