A02 - How to Combine Existing Model with New DWG

1 Objective: The purpose of this tutorial is to explain how to combine an existing model with a new DWG. This is often required when there is any change or amendmend in the architechtural drawing or plan or some component sizes are changed during structural analysis. Unit systems used for this tutorial are SI, American and MKS. Description: Go to the menu item, File Import DWG/DXF. Import the new drawing and calibrate it. For further details on calibration please refer to the tutorial A01 - CAD File Import and Calibration. Once calibration is done, program will show the following dialog box so that one can change project origin. Alternatively one can use menu item Tools Change Project Origin. This is very important to match the project origin of the new drawing with the same of the existing model. Click on Yes and graphically click the point which match with the origin of the existing model. To view the origin of a model you may use menu item View Display WCS. This will show the location of the origin and axis directions as shown below (on the right side). Once you set the project origin, Save the model (this time model contains only the imported drawing). Now use the menu item File Open, to close the new file and open the existing model. Now you need to ensure all items (like Structural Components, Finite Element Objects and Loadings) are being combined with the new file. Hence use eyeglass icon in View toolbar to 1

2 Select/Set View Items. Alternatively you may use menu item View Select Display Items. By default Structural Component tab will be active. Turn on all relevant structural components using associated display box. Alternative you may click on All tab located at the bottom of display column (highlighted in red). Now go to Finite Element tab. Similarly turn on all required finite elements or click on All button located in the display column. Please note if the structure is not meshed or not analysed some items can t be turned on. 2

3 Finally go to Loads tab. Turn on all items and all load cases present in the model as shown in the next page. 3

4 Once all items are displayed in the screen, we need to select all of them. To do so you may click on Select All from selection toolbar. Alternatively you may use menu item Tools Selection Select All or simply press Ctrl+A from your keyboard. When all items are selected, use menu item Edit Copy or press Ctrl+C from your keyboard to copy them in clipboard. Now use menu item File Open to re-open the new model (which has the updated drawing imported in it) and close the existing model. Now use menu item Edit Paste or simply press Ctrl+V from your keyboard to paste the copied info in the new model. 4

5 This will paste the existing model and combine it with the new model. Important Tips: During entire operation we used same builder window. Copy items from one Builder window and Paste it in another Builder Window will not work. User must close the existing model and open a new model to perform copy and paste. As an example to validate or implement the change of slab boundary you can turn off all layer and simple turn on the CAD layer which contains slab boundary. Next going to eyeglass icon (Select/Set Display Items icon) you can turn off all other structural component except Slab.
