1 OBJECTIVES LAB 2: CAM MILLING 1. Students will be exposed to CAM for Milling Machine. 2. Student will have the ability to use CATIA Software as a CAM for Milling Machine. 3. Student will have the ability to generate NC Code from CATIA for Milling Machine. PROCEDURE 1. Once the Catia is fully running, select Prismatic Machining under Machining menu. 2. Open the CAM_Milling_Part_Demo.CATPart file. You can find a file called CAM_Milling on your Desktop. 3. Create Stock Part with dimension shown below on X-Y Plane. Note: Stock is where your Raw material looks like Part is the shape that you want after machining process is completed. Thickness 2 mm higher than part Page 1 of 12
2 4. Select the Stock and change its properties. Set the Transparency to 50 ~ Before you go further, you need to set the Post Processing for NC and its folder by going to the Option and select Machining. 6. Change the Post Processor and Controller Emulator Folder to IMS 7. Create a new folder in My Document, and rename the folder as NC_Code. This is where the NC Code will be saved by Catia 8. At NC Code: Select the folder that you just created. You should see the path below in the NC Code form. C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\NC_Code Page 2 of 12
3 9. Next, click the Part Operation The Part Operation Menu will pop-up. You noticed that there is no machine selected, no Axis setup and no part and stock selected yet. Page 3 of 12
4 11. Click the Icon to select machine. Click the 3-axis Machine.1 machine. 12. Click on the Numerical Control ToolBar. Change the Post Processor to fanuc21i.lib. (This refer to our Turning Machine Controller). 13. Change the Post Processor words table to IMSPPCC_MILL.pptable ( This refer to the coding style of the Controller) 14. Change the NC data type to ISO. (this refer to the NC format of the Controller) 15. Once everything is complete, Click OK button. 16. Next, Click the Reference Axis Icon to set the Axis on the Stock. 17. Click the Origin and select the Bottom-Left surface of the stock. Make sure that the Z-axis is pointed to the TOP part. Click OK once completed. 18. Next, you need to select the Part and the Stock. 19. First you need to click the Part Icon and select the Part Drawing. 20. Next, click the Stock Icon and select the Stock Drawing. 21. Click Manufacturing Program.1 and select the Rough Cutting Icon. Next you will need to define some very important parameters. RED Colour meaning that the important parameter is blank or not correct. GREEN colour meaning that the important parameter is set correctly. Page 4 of 12
5 22. Select the TOP surface and click the TOP surface of the part. You need to unhide the Stock to select to TOP part surface. 23. Than select the Axial menu and change the Mode to Maximum depth of cut. This setting set the facing process to cut 0.5mm per round. 24. Set the tool to End Mill size 10mm. Page 5 of 12
6 25. Click Path Visualization Icon to simulate Tool Path. 26. Next Click the Macro Icon. 27. Select the Approach and Retract Active and set the Mode Direct for both macro. 28. Click the Axial Icon and change the Approach distance to 100mm. 29. Click the Axial Icon and change the Retract distance to 100mm. 30. Click the Simulation Icon and run the simulation. Page 6 of 12
7 31. Now, click on the Pocketing Icon. Make sure that the Pocketing Process is below the Facing Process. 32. Click on the Open Pocket to change it to Closed Pocket. 33. Click on the Top surface and select the Part Top surface. 34. Click on the bottom surface and select the bottom pocket at the Part. 35. Go to the Axial menu and change the Mode to Maximum depth of cut and change the Maximum depth of cut to 1mm. 35. Go to the Radial menu and change the Percentage of tool diameter to 60. Page 7 of 12
8 36. Select the Approach and Retract Active and set the Mode Direct for both macro. 37. Click the Axial Icon and change the Approach distance to 100mm. 38. Click the Axial Icon and change the Retract distance to 100mm. 39. Once you have the basic skill, try to adapt it and use it for pocketing process the square pocket. 40. Once everything is completed, it is time to generate the NC code. Click on the Manufacturing Process.1 and select Generate NC Code Interactively. Page 8 of 12
9 41. You will be required to enter the Program No. Enter any number that has four (4) digit (0001 ~ 9999). 42. You can change the Program Start and End command for the NC Code that suit the CNC Turning machine at the NC formatter. 43. Finally, check your NC Code in the NC_Code folder that you created earlier in this laboratory exercise. Page 9 of 12
