2 Mastercam Training Guide Objectives The learner will create the geometry and toolpaths for WCS-Part-2. This Lesson will cover the following topics: Create a 3-dimensional drawing by: Creating Lines Creating Circles Trimming Geometry Using the View Manager Using Views, Tool Planes and Construction Planes Create Face and Pocket toolpaths MILL-LESSON-WCS-PART-2 DRAWING WCS-Part-2-1

3 WCS-Part-2 WCS - PART-2 - THE PROCESS TASK 1: Setting the environment TASK 2: Introduction - Watch the video TASK 3: Open an Existing file from the Multimedia CD TASK 4: Use View manager to set up new Cplanes and Tplanes TASK 5: Create the.25 radius circles for the slot TASK 6: Create the lines for the slot TASK 7: Trim Geometry TASK 8: Face Mill 30 Degree angle TASK 9: Verify toolpath TASK 10: Pocket slot on 30 degree face TASK 11: Verify toolpaths TASK 12 Post and create the CNC code file Geometry Creation TASK 1: SETTING THE ENVIRONMENT Before starting the geometry creation you should set up the grid, toolbars and machine type as outlined in the Setting up the Environment section at the beginning of this text: 1. Set up the Grid. This will help identify the location of the origin. 2. Customize the toolbars to machine a 2D part. 3. Set the machine type to a Haas Vertical Spindle CNC machine. TASK 2: INTRODUCTION WATCH THE VIDEO 1. Before you start to work on this Lesson review the video on the multimedia CD that came with this text. You will find the video in the Tips and Techniques section it is entitled WCS - Part 2 View manager - 12 Minutes. The video will demonstrate how the geometry is created, how to use the View Manager to create Tool Planes and Construction planes to enable the creation of the face and pocket toolpaths. 4 Mastercam Training Guide TASK 3: OPEN EXISTING FILE FROM THE MULTIMEDIA CD On the multimedia CD that came with this text is a folder called Mastercam-Files. The geometry is partially completed. You will create the geometry for the slot and then face the 30 degree angle and then pocket the slot. Open the file WCS-PART-2.MCX. 1. Select File>Open>WCS-PART-2.MCX. The file should appear as below. TASK 4: USE VIEW MANAGER TO SET UP NEW CPLANES AND TPLANES 1. Select WCS>View Manager from the Status bar. 2. From the View Manager Dialog box select Geometry as shown below. WCS-Part-2-3

5 WCS-Part-2 3. You will be returned to the graphics screen. Select line 1 and 2 as shown below left. Make sure the XYZ tripod is the same as the example below right with the Z axis arrow pointing up from angled face. If required use the arrow buttons in the Select view screen to cycle through to the correct coordinate system. 4. Select the green check mark for OK. 5. In the New View dialog box enter VIEW-30-DEGREES in the name section. 6. Click on the OK icon to complete this feature. 7. Now you are back in the View Manager dialog box select in the C (Cplane) column and T (Tplane) column of the View-30-Degrees row as shown below. 8. Click on the OK icon to complete this feature. Note the location and orientation of the grid now as shown above right. 9. Select on your keyboard ALT and F9. This Displays on the screen the orientation of the Cplane, Tplane and the WCS. 6 Mastercam Training Guide TASK 5: CREATE THE.25 RADIUS CIRCLES FOR THE SLOT In this task you will create the two.25 radius circles for the slot. 1. Select Create>Arc>Circle Center point 2. The Circle Center Point ribbon bar appears and you are prompted to Enter the center point. 3. Click in the space for radius and enter a value of.25 and then hit the enter key. 4. Click on the diameter icon on the ribbon bar so it turns red and locks this value in. 5. To satisfy the prompt Enter the center point click on the Fastpoint icon and enter 1.5,0.875 for the center point and hit enter. 6. On the ribbon bar click on Apply to fix the entity. 7. To satisfy the prompt Enter the center point click on the Fastpoint icon and enter 1.5,3.0 for the center point and hit enter. 8. Click on the OK icon to complete this feature. WCS-Part-2-5

7 WCS-Part-2 TASK 6: CREATE THE LINES FOR THE SLOT This task explains how to create the two lines that are tangent to the.25 radius circles. Create Line #1 1. Select from the pull down menu: Create>Line>Endpoint. 2. On the screen you are prompted to Specify the first endpoint. For the selection of this point you will employ the use of the AutoCursor to select the endpoint of the top circle as shown below: 3. Click on the end point of the top arc when you see the visual cue for end point. 4. On the screen you are prompted to Specify the second endpoint. Click on the end point of the bottom arc when you see the visual cue for end point. 5. On the ribbon bar click on Apply to fix the entity. WCS-Part-2-6

8 Mastercam Training Guide 6. On the screen you are prompted to Specify the first endpoint for the selection of this point hold down the Alt key and select the top arc as shown below. 7. On the screen you are prompted to Specify the second endpoint. Continue to hold down the Alt key and select the lower arc as shown above. 8. Click on the OK icon to complete this feature. WCS-Part-2-7

9 WCS-Part-2 TASK 7: TRIM GEOMETRY In this task you will Trim the two circles in the slot. To perform this Trim operation you will use the Divide function found on the Trim/Break/Extend ribbon bar. 1. Select Edit>Trim/Break>Trim/Break/Extend 2. The Trim / Extend / Break ribbon bar appears and you are prompted to Select the entity to trim/extend. 3. Click on the Divide icon to activate it as shown above. Ensure the icon is pressed down to signal that it is activated. 4. The prompt changes to Select the curve to divide. Move the cursor over the upper right.25 radius circle and select it as shown below left, and now select the lower circle as shown below: The circles are trimmed back to the two closest intersections as shown above right: 5. Click on the OK icon to complete this feature. WCS-Part-2-8

10 Mastercam Training Guide TASK 8: FACE MILL 30 DEGREE ANGLE In this task you will use a 2.0 diameter face mill to face the 30 degree angle. The tool axis will be perpendicular to this 30 degree machined face. The Stock setup has already been completed for you. 1. From the menu bar select Toolpaths>Face 2. If prompted to Enter new NC name ensure WCS-EXAMPLE-2 is displayed and then select the OK button. If not prompted then continue to the next step. 3. On the screen you will now see the Chaining dialog box with Chain set and in the graphics screen a prompt to Select OK to use defined stock or select chain Activate the C-plane radio button. 5. Select the angled line as shown below to chain the area being faced. 6. Select the OK button to exit the chaining dialog box. WCS-Part-2-9

11 WCS-Part-2 7. Select the 2 facing tool. 8. Select the Facing parameters page and make changes to this page as shown below. WCS-Part-2-10

12 Mastercam Training Guide 9. Check mark Depth Cuts and select the Depth Cuts button. 10. Select the OK button to exit Depth cuts. 11. Select the OK button to exit Face parameters. TASK 9: VERIFY THE TOOLPATH 1. In the Toolpath Manager pick all the operations to verify by picking the Select All icon 2. Select the Verify selected operations button circled below: 3. Adjust the Verify speed to midway along the speed control bar. 4. Activate the Simulate tool and holder option as shown below. 5. Select the play button to verify the toolpath. 6. Select the OK button to exit Verify. WCS-Part-2-11

13 WCS-Part-2 TASK 10: POCKET SLOT ON 30 DEGREE FACE In this task you will use a diameter flat end mill to machine the pocket on the 30 degree angled face. The pocket depth is Turn off the display of toolpaths by selecting Alt-T on your keyboard. 2. From the menu bar select Toolpaths>Pocket 3. On the screen you will now see the Chaining dialog box with Chain set and in the graphics screen a prompt to Select Pocket chain Activate the C-plane radio button. 5. Select the angled line as shown below to chain the slot. 6. After selecting the line your graphics screen should look like the screenshot above, with the green arrow pointing upwards, if not see below. 7. If the arrow is not pointing upwards select the arrow from the Chaining dialog box shown below to reverse the direction. 8. After the pocket has been successfully chained select the OK button at the bottom of the Chaining dialog box. WCS-Part-2-12

14 Mastercam Training Guide 9. Select diameter end mill. 10. Select the Pocketing parameters page and make changes to this page as shown below: WCS-Part-2-13

16 Mastercam Training Guide TASK 11: VERIFY THE TOOLPATHS 1. In the Toolpath Manager pick all the operations to verify by picking the Select All icon 2. Select the Verify selected operations button circled below: 3. Adjust the Verify speed to midway along the speed control bar. 4. Activate the Simulate tool and holder option as shown below. 5. Select the play button to verify the toolpath. 6. Select the OK button to exit Verify. WCS-Part-2-15

17 WCS-Part-2 TASK 12: POST AND CREATE THE CNC CODE FILE 1. Ensure all the operations are selected by picking the Select All icon from the Toolpath manager. 2. Select the Post selected operations button from the Toolpath manager. Please Note: If you cannot see G1 click on the right pane of the Toolpath manger window and expand the window to the right. 3. In the Post processing window, make the necessary changes as shown below: 4. Select the OK button to continue. WCS-Part-2-16

18 Mastercam Training Guide 5. Enter the same name as your Mastercam part file name in the NC File name field WCS- Part Select the Save button. 7. Select the in the top right corner to exit the CNC editor. 8. This completes WCS-Part-2. WCS-Part-2-17
