3 Introducing the EasyCoder PM4i RFID Kit This RFID kit enables your PM4i printer to read and write RFID tags. The internal RFID radio module operates on the UHF band at 869 or 915 MHz depending on region. The RFID interface board occupies one of the slots for optional interfaces at the back of the printer and features an extra RS-232 serial interface. For printers running Fingerprint, this is referred to as "uart2:", "uart3:" or "uart4:" depending on which slot is used and what other optional devices are installed. Please note that the RS-232 connector is not functional when the board is installed in an IPL printer. To install and operate the RFID kit, you need: Fingerprint v (or later) or IPL v (or later). The latest firmware versions are always available for download at A #T10 and a #T20 Torx screwdriver. A straight-slot screwdriver. Installing the RFID Kit The kit comes either factory installed or can be installed on-site by an authorized service technician. Before you start installation, please acknowledge the following important notices: The installation described in this section must only be performed by an authorized service technician. Intermec assumes no responsibility for personal injury or damage to the equipment if the installation is performed by an unauthorized person. 4 Before you begin, make sure the printer has been switched off and the power cord and communication cables are disconnected. 5 To install the RFID kit 1 Open the printer s side door. 2 Turn the LSS adjustment screw counterclockwise to move the position of the Label Stop Sensor so that it does not obstruct the small hole leading into the electronics compartment. EasyCoder PM4i RFID Kit Installation Instructions 3

6 3 Carefully slide the upper media guide out along the support shaft. Loosen the edge guide and remove both items from the shaft. Upper Media Guide Edge Guide 4 Route the antenna connection cable through the opening in the center deck. Slide the new media guide (with antenna) and the edge guide onto the shaft. 4 EasyCoder PM4i RFID Kit Installation Instructions

7 5 Lay the printer on its side, electronic compartment facing down. Remove the four screws that hold the electronics cover to the printer. 6 Put the printer back on its feet. Remove the four screws that hold the cover to the center section. Gently pull out the cover so the console cable can be disconnected from the CPU board. 8 7 If you do not already have a real-time clock installed, use the one supplied with the kit. Slide it into its designated slot on the main board, marked RTC & PROGRAM KEY. For more information on how to set the real-time clock, please refer to the Fingerprint Programmer s Reference Manual (P/N xxx). RTC & PROGRAM KEY 8 Connect the Dual Slot I/O cable to the main board before sliding the RFID interface board into one of the unoccupied slots in the rear of the printer. 9 9 Connect the Dual Slot I/O cable to the RFID interface board. If you are installing the board in slot number 2, use the cable s second connector. 10 Secure the board with two screws in the printer s rear plate. You can use the two M3x5 screws supplied with the kit, or use the ones left over when you removed the cover plate. EasyCoder PM4i RFID Kit Installation Instructions 7

10 11 Use the M4x5 screw to attach the RFID interface board to the circuit board behind it. If you are installing in slot 1, you can use the spacer screw that comes pre-installed on the main board. If you are installing in slot 2, use the spacer screw supplied with the kit. 12 Connect the antenna cable to the jack on the radio module. 8 EasyCoder PM4i RFID Kit Installation Instructions

11 To reassemble the printer 1 Reattach the console cable to the CPU board while putting back the cover over the electronics compartment. 2 Fasten the four screws in the center deck. 3 Tip the printer over on its side. 4 Insert and fasten the screws in the empty holes in the bottom plate.
