3 The Auto Updater for PDAs that use icons to navigate Although all PDAs are receiving the update, the instructions for applying it vary from one model of PDA to another. The instructions in this document relate to the Motorola MC55A0 and the version of the MC5590 that uses icons, not menus. If you start e-dc using an icon (see the image on the right below), these are the right instructions for you. Why do I need an update? There are a number of different PDAs in use within trusts, with different versions of the e-dc application installed. Having multiple versions to support and manage places a burden on NHS Supply Chain, slowing our response to request for changes. Once everyone is on the same version of software, we can respond more quickly, working to resolve any issues that are encountered on fewer combinations of PDA and application. The instructions for installing this particular update are detailed, and that is one of the things that this update fixes. In the future, the built-in update option will enable you to install updates as part of your normal routine. Other changes in this update are necessary to enable us to improve the system in the future. How long will it take? The update itself normally takes from 3 to 5 minutes. The PDA boots twice during the process. Before you can use your PDA, you may have to reload your MMDs. Is there any help? The NHS Supply Chain helpdesk will be ready to answer your questions and give any help you need. The helpdesk will be focusing on issues relating to the upgrade for the week immediately after it is released. You can call the helpdesk on or them at cshelpdesk@supplychain.nhs.uk. 4 You should apply the update as soon as possible. The update process typically takes from 3 to 5 minutes, but may take a little longer depending on how busy your network is. We would normally expect it to finish in less than 10 minutes. Until you apply the update following the instructions below, each time you upload orders or other information using the Comms option, the PDA checks whether there are any updates available. The PDA will find this update, and you will be given the option to install it. 1 When you next send orders or load MMDs, you will see that a program update is available. 2 Tap OK in the bottom right corner. 3 Tap Yes to update your PDA. 5 4 Tap Update to begin the update process. A series of messages are shown stating what the update process is doing. The final one in the series indicates that the process is finished, and you are returned to the PDA home page. 7 8 Tap Close. 9 Start edc. 10 Enter your Username and Password and then tap Login. 11 Reload your MMDs using the Comms option as usual if none are shown. You should routinely re-load your MMDs every fortnight as a minimum we recommend weekly, so it becomes part of your normal routine to ensure you have the most up-to-date user information and requirements on the PDA.
