2 Bring Your Own Caboolture State High School BYOD at Caboolture SHS is not new. Since 2002, students have brought their own device as part of the school s LearnIT program. Since 2011, senior students have also benefited from being able to use the same device at home and school to support their learning as part of esenior where they have borrowed a school-owned laptop. The P&C of Caboolture SHS now supports the school-wide implementation of a BYOD program. While all students are invited and encouraged to participate, the school has the expectation that, as part of the program s roll out, all Year 7s from 2018 will take part in this program. To support their senior studies, Year 11s will also be expected to be equipped with their own device. To participate, student-owned laptops will need to meet minimum specifications. These will be determined by the school as those required for a device to satisfactorily operate on our network and run the designated software. For students who are unable to provide their own device, the school will have a small number laptops available for loan. Please note, these laptops are not new and there will be a loan fee involved. Why students like bringing their own I m more organized. I don t have to wait to use the family computer. I m doing more homework and am better at finishing things on time. It allows me to have everything on my laptop rather than carry around loads of books. Everything s just there and it s great for research. I m learning how to use different software and can type faster. I can always access my work and it s great to have my own, reliable laptop. My documents don t need to be constantly copied and moved from different devices. BYOD options Participants have three options (more details follow): 1. LearnIT- for students participating in the LearnIT program 2. BYOD 1 EQ vendor participants buy a laptop through one of our BYOD education partners and receive onsite support by authorized service agents 3. BYOD 2 own choice - students bring a laptop of their choice provided it meets minimum specifications In each option, students will have access to the school network, internet and printers. EVERYDAY or MEDIA device - WHICH WILL SUIT YOUR STUDENT? An EVERYDAY device will suit most student needs in terms of accessing and using MS Office, electronic textbooks, online programs and web browsers. Students with a strong interest in media- based subjects such as Graphics, IT and/or Art may be better suited to a MEDIA device with higher specifications. While media subjects are timetabled into desktop computer labs, it is advantageous for students of them to have access to the relevant software at home.

3 OPTIONS DESCRIPTION COSTS Approximate device cost School cost LEARNIT LearnIT LearnIT is an Education Queensland Program of Excellence which operates from Years Student participation is by application and interview and meeting the criteria of behaviour, effort, academic ability and keenness to learn through ICTs. Students in this program buy a designated laptop (in 2017, a Toshiba Portege Z20t). These laptops are supported and serviced onsite at Caboolture State High School by school technicians and an authorised Toshiba repair agent who also, in cases of accidental damage, facilitates repairs and claims. $2200 in 2017 $100 in Year 7 Years 8-10 BYOD 1 EQ vendor BYOD 2 own choice LearnIT students in Years 11 and 12 Once students finish LearnIT in Year 10, they can choose to keep using their LearnIT laptop in Years 11 and 12 with full school IT support. Alternatively, they can opt into one of the following BYOD options. Toshiba or HP option Caboolture SHS has service and support arrangements with both Toshiba and HP. Students who purchase through the designated Toshiba education agent or the school s HP portal will receive school IT support and be able to access the Toshiba and HP repair agents at school. Students can choose from a small number of devices, designed to suit or MEDIA* study needs. BYOD Students can opt to bring and use other devices provided they meet minimum specifications. The school will assist in network connection and school software functionality but will not be able to provide onsite support or service for hardware or operation issues. WHAT TO BUY? EVERYDAY or MEDIA?* Please refer to the minimum specifications sheet when purchasing a device and take it with you to show vendors. Sample models and prices are included in this document Approx. $700 upwards MEDIA* Approx. $1700 upwards Approx. $700 upwards MEDIA* Approx. $1700 upwards Years $20 annually for option $40 annually for MEDIA* option Local retailers are aware of our school requirements and have a range of suitable products, packages and payment options to suggest and offer to families. Show them the BYOD@CSHS Minimum Specifications list to help with your purchase. If you wish to use a laptop you already own, we recommend that it not be older than two years and it will need to meet the minimum requirements as per the BYOD@CSHS Minimum Specifications list in order to connect to our network and satisfactorily run the required programs. * Students need to consider whether an EVERYDAY or MEDIA device will best suit their learning. For more information, see over and on the BYOD@CABSHS Minimum Specifications list.

Return Participation Agreement (available from school or website), pay $20 (EVERYDAY) or $40 (MEDIA) to Cashier and present laptop to school IT Support staff for connection *Everyday vs Media EVERYDAY - For most students, the EVERYDAY device will meet school needs. Its specifications are sufficient for everyday programs such as MS Office, electronic textbooks, online programs and web browsing. MEDIA For students with a strong interest and focus in media- based subjects such as Graphics, IT and Art, a MEDIA device will be more appropriate. Students will need Adobe software which is available through the school.

5 BYOD DEVICES minimum specifications Students can opt to bring and use other devices provided they meet minimum specifications. The school will assist in connecting them to the school network and accessing software but will not be able to provide onsite support or service for hardware or operation issues. Present this checklist to help ensure the device is suited to your student s needs. PLEASE NOTE, YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY ANTIVIRUS OR MICROSOFT OFFICE AT RETAIL PRICES*. If you own a device which you wish to use, it should also meet the following minimum specifications. If you are unsure how to determine this, the school s IT Support staff will be able to help. We recommend that existing devices not be more than two years old. EVERYDAY DEVICE minimum specs This device will suit a student s everyday study needs. Suitable for operating basic programs such as Office, electronic textbooks, online programs and web browsing. 4GB RAM or higher 128GB SSD* or 500GB HDD or higher MEDIA DEVICE minimum specs This device is suited to students with a strong media subject focus (eg Graphics, IT or Art).
