1 TIER 1 CLASSROOM USE Our goal at Information Technology Services (ITS) is to provide the highest level of technical support and customer service to all San Jacinto College students and employees. 2 CONNECTING A LAPTOP IN A TIER 1 CLASSROOM Note: The projector screen is not automatic. You will need to manually pull down the screen for use. 1. Plug one end of the display cable into the wall-mounted input panel. The port used will depend on the type of cable you have. If using a VGA cable, screw one end into the Computer In port on the input panel. If using an HDMI cable, plug one end into the available HDMI slot on the right side of the panel. 2. Plug the other end of the display cable (VGA or HDMI) into the laptop. 3. If you would like to connect to the SJC Network using a cable, or if you are unable to connect to an available wireless network, you can do so by plugging a network cable into the available network ports to the left of the wall-mounted input panel. 4. Power on the laptop. 2

3 5. Once the laptop is powered up, turn on the projector by pressing the ON button, located on the wallmounted Control Panel. The ON button will light up; indicating it is currently selected. Note: Please be aware that it may take a minute or two for the projector to power up and project an image on the screen. 6. Select the correct source from the wall-mounted Control Panel by pressing the available buttons. If using a VGA cable, the source you will want to select is PC. If using a HDMI cable, select HDMI. Like the ON and OFF buttons, the source buttons will light up; letting you know which is currently active. 3

4 The laptop should now successfully be connected and an image projecting onto the screen. When you are finished, simply complete the following steps to disconnect: 1. Turn on the projector by pressing the OFF button, located on the wall-mounted Control Panel. The OFF button will light up; indicating it is currently selected. 2. Shut down the laptop. 3. Disconnect the display cable (VGA or HDMI) and network cable (if used). 4. Lift the projector screen by gently tugging on the pull cord and guiding it back into its case. 4

5 ADJUSTING VOLUME IN A TIER 1 CLASSROOM Included on the Control Panel for Tier 1 rooms are volume control options that allow you to directly adjust speaker volume. On the Control Panel, you will notice a volume knob and a Mute button. To adjust sound level, simply turn the volume knob; (clockwise to increase volume and counterclockwise to decrease volume). You ll also notice a light indicator immediately to the left of the volume knob. These lights indicate how loud the volume is currently set on the system. The more lights you see, the louder the volume. In addition, the Control Panel also has a Mute button available to immediately shut off all sound, if necessary. To quiet the volume, simply press the Mute button. If sound is muted, the button will light up; letting you know that this feature is currently active. To turn mute off, simply press the button again. Laptop Volume In addition to the available volume controls on the Control Panel, your laptop s volume will also affect sound levels in class. When adjusting volume, check your laptop s sound by completing the following steps: 1. Click once on the speaker icon in the far left corner of your taskbar. 2. Click and drag the slider bar to adjust volume level. 5

6 3. If you see a little Do Not symbol over the speaker, this indicates that the laptop sound is muted. To unmute, click on the icon beneath the slider bar (or uncheck the Mute box under the slider bar, if running Windows XP). 6

7 PROJECTOR WILL NOT DISPLAY AN IMAGE IN A TIER 1 CLASSROOM Users may receive an error on the projector screen that states No Source Found when connecting a laptop in a Tier 1 classroom. This error occurs because the projector is unable to communicate with the laptop and can result for a variety of reasons. Users can quickly troubleshoot this issue by following these steps: 1. Double check to ensure that the VGA or HDMI cable you are using is securely connected to both the wallmounted Input Panel and the laptop. 2. Check to ensure that you have selected the proper source on the Control Panel. This will depend on the type of cable you are using. If using a VGA cable, ensure that the PC source is selected. If using an HDMI cable, ensure that the HDMI source is selected. 3. If neither of the above resolves the issue, try adjusting the laptop source. You can accomplish this by pressing Fn+F8 in your laptop keyboard (this is the correct key combination for most laptops; however, it may vary). This function will switch your laptop s display between its monitor and a connected display source; such as the projector. You may have to press Fn+F8 more than once. Caution: Your laptop may take several seconds to change display sources. Once you press Fn+F8, give your laptop a few seconds to cycle. If no image appears on the projector screen, try again. If none of these steps resolves the issue, please contact Tech Support at for further assistance.
