2 Discord is a social text platform that offers BVA members a supplementary means of connecting. The server is available on an optional basis, with no requirement to use Discord to communicate with ATC or fly on the network. The Member Discord is accessible to all members and is designed to be a social platform to enhance flying and controlling on the network (it is not a requirement). Feel free to say hello, introduce yourself, and ask questions, whether or not you re actively flying or controlling at the time. Like our forums and TeamSpeak server, communications through Discord are governed by BVA's Member Expectations. Members are expected to act professionally, maturely, and respectfully toward each other at all times. If you are looking to speak with someone via voice, check out our Member TeamSpeak! 1. Navigate to the Discord website. 2. Select the appropriate download for your operating system. 3. Follow the instructions and prompts to install the program. (You can also use the web and mobile versions of Discord, but the desktop client works very well.) Once you have downloaded and installed the Discord application, when you open the program you will be asked to login to your account. If you have not already created an account, click the Register button and complete the registration process. Otherwise, simply login to your preexisting account. The steps below provide instructions for connecting to Boston Virtual ARTCC s Member Discord server. The same instructions can be used to connect to a different server, substituting the invitation link with that of the different server.

4 3. Insert the Instant Invite link listed on the Member Discord page: 3 When you close or log out of Discord, you remain within the server (but show offline ). The Leave Server option is to be used only if you no longer desire to have your Discord account associated with the BVA Member Discord server. After connecting to the BVA Member Discord, you will immediately receive a private message from our Discord robot, Dyno Bot (aka Boston John). You will also notice that you only have access to two text channels: #rules and #verification. The private message you receive from Dyno Bot contains information regarding how to gain full access to the Member Discord channels. Please read the message in its entirety and comply will all steps in order to be granted access.

5 The first step asks you to change your nickname to your full first and last name. As stated within the message, do this by navigating to the right column within Discord, right clicking on your username, and selecting Change Nickname.

The next steps ask that you navigate to the #verification channel and send a message within that channel with the current BVA Member Discord password (which can be found here), your VATSIM CID, and

After you have completed these steps, a BVA Administrator will grant you permissions to access the remainder of the Discord. Please be patient as it may take some time for an administrator to connect and assign you the appropriate permissions. Discord is very mobile-friendly and is designed to enable you to stay connected with the community while on the go. Once you have registered an account, joined the BVA Member Discord server, and been verified, we encourage you to use Discord on your smartphone and tablets. Simply download and install Discord through your phone/tablet s app store, then login to the account you previously registered. The BVA Member Discord and your permissions will automatically sync. As you may know, BVA s Member TeamSpeak is a social interface designed to interact with other members via voice. Generally, people using TeamSpeak are online, present, and are actively flying or air traffic controlling. Unlike TeamSpeak, Discord is more of an ongoing chat client. Our Member Discord does not have voice capability and is more mobile-friendly than TeamSpeak. Members are be encouraged to join the chat, and to use Discord to ask questions or send messages to admins, friends, etc. when they aren t connected to the network or around the community. Discord is more of a group chat setting that also allows for announcements, targeted questions/answers, and member connectivity. Think of Discord as a modernized, mobile forum board!

7 Once an ARTCC Administrator has verified you and granted you permissions, you will see a variety of text channels available for use. These range from general lounges to troubleshooting and assistance-related channels. Each channel has a description and may also contain a pinned message for further information regarding the channel s topic. Depending on your involvement with BVA s sub-communities, you may also have access to additional community text channels. Begin to explore, and be sure to say hello and introduce yourself within the #lounge! If you have questions, there s a channel for that. By default, when you join the BVA Member Discord you will only receive push notifications to your desktop program/mobile app if your username is mentioned (if tags you). You can adjust these notifications settings by clicking on Boston Virtual ARTCC, then selecting Notification Settings. Once there, you may opt to receive notifications for all messages if you choose. We do not encourage this, as that means you will be notified each time a message is sent in any of the text channels you have access to.

For example, if you chose only to receive notifications when you are mentioned (tagged), but really want to be aware when someone is planning a group flight, you are able to input the #group-flights text channel and select all notifications for that particular channel.
