This choice can be made on a program-by-program basis as desired, and switching to COBOL can be done at any time. This allows customers to leverage the skills and resources they currently have without requiring massive, sudden change and the associated expense. COBOL skills will be available to whatever direction their future takes. Unlock the value of business logic from programs written in CA Easytrieve Plus or Easytrieve (Classic) language. By converting Easytrieve programs to COBOL, the utility makes it easier to unlock the business value invested in programs, making the programs available to modern service oriented architecture (SOA) application usage without costly re-engineering. Enhance and modernize the output of traditional mainframe programs without having to change any source code. The new Report Modernization Utility component of Migration Utility works like a print spooler, automatically converting mainframe listing-style output reports into HTML, and also providing a limited capability to enhance the formatting and appearance of these reports - again without changing the program that generates the report. These resulting reports can be automatically routed to a Web server for deployment and distribution. Easily and automatically create complex and linked hierarchical reports in HTML format. The utility also lets the user modify existing programs to generate sophisticated linked HTML reports. These structured reports allow viewers can quickly scan a summary level report, and from there quickly link to supporting detail, and thus more efficiently navigate through large volumes of data to "drill down" into key relevant information elements. HTML report output can be routed automatically to a Web server for easier deployment and distribution. Overview The Migration Utility for z/os, allows you to create standard COBOL programs and reports using Computer Associates' (CA) Easytrieve or Easytrieve Plus languages. Existing Easytrieve language programs can also be modernized and tailored with the addition of a few statements to produce HTML reports or Character-separated Values (.CSV) output, which can be automatically deployed to the Web server. With Migration Utility for z/os V3.2 programs written in an Easytrieve language are converted to COBOL and tested in a COBOL environment, after which the CA IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1

2 Easytrieve product no longer needs to be installed on the system in order to deploy, use and maintain converted or newly written programs. Migration Utility can be used to continue maintaining programs using the familiar Easytrieve language, or converted programs can be maintained and developed in COBOL after conversion, depending on the organization's skill set and technical direction - all without having to use the CA Easytrieve product. Included utilities for discovery, batch conversion, parallel testing, electronic output comparison, and program abend analysis can help make program conversion to COBOL quicker and easier, and simplify deployment of output to Web servers on both System z and distributed platforms. The Migration Utility can be used to: Modify or enhance programs written in an Easytrieve language Modify or enhance programs using Easytrieve language Create brand-new reports using the Easytrieve Plus language and Migration Utility extensions New capability in V3.2 helps make it easier to modernize mainframe programgenerated output. Mainframe printer files can be converted automatically to HTML for use with Web browsers and can be automatically routed to the z/os Web server, or downloaded for placement on a distributed platform Web server. Optionally a script language can be used to further customize and enhance output, with control over fonts, colors, background, and addition and placement of images and graphics. Either the generated COBOL source or the original Easytrieve language source can be edited to include additional logic not supported by CA-Easytrieve Plus, or to make modifications to report content as required by changing business conditions. Programs written in Easytrieve language are converted to Easytrieve Plus, and then ultimately to COBOL. Powerful capabilities allow Migration Utility to add new value to old programs written in CA-Easytrieve or CA-Easytrieve Plus languages. By adding simple-toapply statements existing Easytrieve Plus programs and the runtime JCL, they the programs can be transformed to produce modern HTML reports which can be automatically deployed to the Web server. Tight integration with the WebSphere Application Server on the zseries platform makes it easier to run and automatically deploy the reports in the same batch job, without the tedious and error-prone work of sorting and handling the reports, creating directories, and placing the files. Using Migration Utility special report logic, users can create logically-linked reports that summarize information at the top level, and allow hierarchical linked views into the detail levels below. This creates intelligent navigation paths through layers of reports so you can more quickly locate the pertinent details behind summary information using the familiar syntax of the CA-Easytrieve and Easytrieve Plus languages and the additional statements supported by Migration Utility. In addition to creation and automated deployment of HTML reports, Migration Utility also supports the creation of.csv output files, which are used with common office applications such as spreadsheets, word processors, or distributed databases. Instead of having to manually enter data from reports into documents, or cut-andpaste entries into analysis spreadsheets, the data can be created in the correct format, and put to instant use without extra effort or error. The Migration Utility includes a number of useful tools to make the process of converting from CA-Easytrieve or Easytrieve Plus simpler. A discovery utility can help locate and centralize Easytrieve programs for use with the batch conversion utility. The automated parallel test and electronic comparison utilities can drastically reduce the effort required to convert programs and compare outputs to support successful conversion. 4 failing portions of the original Easytrieve source program so any corrections can be made more quickly and easily. Migration Utility provides macros, which can replace a limited subset of CA-PanAudit macros. Use of the Migration Utility for z/os enables application modernization and can also help save on Easytrieve Plus license costs, and deliver additional benefits, including superior efficiency in I/O handling and memory management, improved performance in sorting and searching, coexistence with other language environments and platforms, accessibility to COBOL debugging tools, and the ability to augment Easytrieve logic with embedded COBOL subroutines. Usage of Migration Utility permits a phased transition from Easytrieve to COBOL over time as your skills dictate. Your use of the highly productive Easytrieve language can continue as long as you desire. 5 without changing any source code. It even works on programs that were not written in CA-Easytrieve language. Sample JCL is provided for each job step in the translation process, which can easily be adapted to your operating standards. The Migration Utility ships as a set of macros which interprets the Easytrieve syntax and generates the meta-format, and load modules which perform the rest of the conversion to COBOL. The sample JCL then invokes the COBOL compile, link, and go steps. Ongoing program usage and maintenance: After conversion and verification testing of existing programs, it is no longer necessary to use the CA-Easytrieve Plus product. If CA-Easytrieve Plus language source programs are retained, future maintenance can be performed using CA- Easytrieve language, and they can be augmented by adding Migration Utility statements (instructions) not supported by CA-Easytrieve Plus to deliver new capability or to modernize the application. Brand-new programs can be developed using the familiar, easier-to-use CA-Easytrieve Plus language, using the Migration Utility in place of the CA-Easytrieve compiler. Programs may be executed in Compile- Link-and-Go mode for flexibility if desired, or COBOL load modules may be deployed into production systems for better performance. If programs are to be permanently converted to COBOL for life-cycle maintenance, the converted programs can be stored and managed using code control libraries such as Software Configuration Library Management (SCLM) or any development environment desired. COBOL code can also, with minor alterations, be ported to other platforms such as Windows, UNIX, or Linux. Business logic from these converted programs can be captured for reuse in SOA applications, avoiding the need for costly re-engineering efforts. New Report Modernization Utility (RMU) This stand-alone utility that converts mainframe printer files (reports) to HTML and.csv files. It runs exclusively on z/os. The purpose of RMU is to provide a comprehensive tool for converting mainframe reports to HTML and.csv format understood by standard Web browsers and spreadsheet software, without any need to modify existing programs. Once the reports are converted, they can be published to z/os or any other Server, or downloaded to a PC platform for local access. Input to RMU can be any standard printer file produced in COBOL, BAL or other language. RMU executes on z/os in background as a batch JOB. Input and output environment is controlled via JCL. A Script Language is available for massaging and decorating the input. The output is published directly to z/os server, or written to a file that can be routed / downloaded to any other server or client platform. RMU features include: HTML and.csv documents produced from standard reports without changing the application programs. An available Script Language (RMU Script) for enhancing HTML documents. The language can enhance and customize HTML text with Fonts, CSS, and colors (for example, negative amounts can be displayed in red), simulate 1403 green striped printer paper in the background, place objects such as pictures and special annotations in specific spots on the document, use Script in interpretive mode or compiled and linked mode, produce simple HTML documents, and produce HTML documents with control breaks tree on the left side and the report body on the right side. HTML documents can be published to the z/os server automatically simply by pointing JCL to z/os server. HTML documents can be created to a disk file and downloaded to any other platform. Subsequent acquisitions of Value Unit priced programs offer additional price benefits. The quantity of each System z IPLA program that you have acquired is referred to as entitled license capacity. If you wish to grow your entitled license capacity for a System z IPLA program, the calculation to determine additional needed Value Units is based upon the number of Value Units already acquired.
