It supports most structured and unstructured data sources, and is optimized for IBM z Systems TM sources such as IBM DB2 for z/os and VSAM. New in this release: QMF TM continues to expand the data sources it supports and is enabled to be a data source to other applications. QMF brings its comprehensive support of data sources to its QMF TSO/ CICS (R) client. In addition to DB2 for z/os and IMS TM, the QMF TSO/ CICS client can now access IBM z TM /OS data sources such as VSAM, ADABAS, flat files, and log data. The support also enables access to non-z/os data sources, including relational and nonrelational data sources. QMF TSO and CICS clients add significant performance and storage improvements in V12.1 through an additional database thread employed for user activities. QMF users also now have the ability to control the fetch buffer size, which could reduce storage requirements and boost fetch performance. QMF adds folder-based data sources and IBM Cognos (R) 10 BI content to its supported data sources. QMF objects can now be used as data sources in QMF or external applications. Overview DB2 Query Management Facility for z/os, V12.1 expands the data sources it supports and adds this comprehensive access to its QMF TSO and CICS client. The QMF TSO and CICS clients now have the ability to access most z/os data plus most structured and unstructured mainframe data, enabling users to do "in-place" analytics. QMF TSO and CICS clients add significant performance and storage improvements in V12.1 through an additional database thread employed for user activities. QMF users also now have the ability to control the fetch buffer size, which could reduce storage requirements and boost fetch performance. 2 QMF users can also now leverage Cognos 10 BI content, including queries and PowerCubes. This enables users to include Cognos content when creating QMF dashboards and objects. QMF also now supports folder-based data sources, which will be represented to the user as a table. Supported file types are: xls, xslx, txt, and csv. Excel files are represented as schemas, and tabs within the files will become tables. A QMF web API has been added that enables access to QMF through RESTful Web Service. Additionally, QMF objects can now be used as virtual tables in its data virtualization service. Both of these enhancements enable QMF to now be a data source to external applications. QMF continues its close synergy with the IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator and provides the following enhancements in this release: The QMF web and workstation clients have enhanced support for the IBM Analytics Accelerator: QMF data can now be saved directly to Accelerator Only tables or Accelerator Shadow tables. This enables QMF queries to take advantage of the speed of executing to Accelerator Only tables and Accelerator Shadow tables. Administrative and usability enhancements allow for better control of the Analytics Accelerator and QMF usage, plus better information of the available accelerators to the QMF clients. The QMF Vision interface is enhanced to work directly with data files and is now integrated with IBM Connections TM for enhanced collaboration. Key prerequisites DB2 QMF operates on any z Systems TM hardware configuration that supports the required software. Refer to the Hardware requirements and Software requirements sections for details. Planned availability date October 21, 2016 Description QMF for z/os helps you to connect to and query virtually any data source required by the enterprise: relational (DB2, SQL Server, Oracle, and others), nonrelational (Spark, Hadoop, and web services), and mainframe (including VSAM, ADABAS, IMS, and CICS). QMF for z/os delivers the ability to perform fast analytics in place, without the need for ETL, with its new data virtualization service. It also works well with the DB2 Analytics Accelerator for z/os, which can give you excellent response times for your analytical queries. DB2 QMF can be deployed so that the bulk of its workload is ziip 1 eligible for increased cost-effectiveness. DB2 QMF's data service enables access to numerous data sources and greatly eliminates the need to move data in order to perform your analytics. It enables you to obtain real-time analytics insights using a high-performance, in-memory mainframe solution. The need for real-time information requires a high-performance data architecture that can handle the extreme volumes and unique requirements of mainframe data and that is transparent to the business user. 3 DB2 QMF's data service includes several query optimization features, such as parallel I/O and MapReduce. Multiple, parallel threads handle input requests, continually streaming and buffering data to the client. The mainframe MapReduce technology greatly reduces the elapsed time of the query by accessing the database with multiple threads that read the file in parallel. Data definitions and schema information are extracted from a variety of places to create virtual tables. All of the implementation details are hidden to the user, presented instead as a single logical data source. The logical data source is easily administered through the Eclipse-based QMF Data Service Studio. With this enhancement, DB2 QMF supports a broader range of data sources, including: Mainframe: Relational/nonrelational databases and file structures: ADABAS, DB2, IMS, VSAM, and Physical Sequential; CICS and IMS Distributed: Databases running on Linux TM, UNIX TM, and Microsoft TM Windows TM platforms: DB2, Oracle, Informix (R), Derby, and SQL Server Cloud and big data: Cloud-based relational and nonrelational data, and support for Hadoop With version 12.1, you can access these data sources through the QMF for TSO and CICS client and QMF for Workstation and QMF for WebSphere (R). QMF TSO and CICS clients add significant performance and storage improvements in V12.1 through an additional database thread employed for user activities. QMF users also now have the ability to control the fetch buffer size, which could reduce storage requirements and boost fetch performance. QMF Vision is the web client interface that enables you to create, modify, and drill down on data visualizations that are displayed on a dashboard. Users have the ability to drag and drop whatever dimensions or measures are needed, or add more variables for increased drill-down capability. Column, pie, treemap, geo map, line, scatter charts, and many more chart objects are available. This gives a business user the ability to analyze data and provide insights that might not be readily apparent. The most commonly requested guided analytics capabilities, such as outlier detection and cardinality, are now provided out of the box. These capabilities are integrated into the architecture for an intuitive analysis experience. For one-off decision making, you can quickly create simple reports using the tabular chart, which gives you a line-by-line view of summary data. Reports can be formatted to produce multilevel grouping, hierarchical structures, and dynamic cross tabulations, all for greater readability. Flat files (for example, csv and Excel) can be uploaded directly to QMF Vision and users can leverage data from Cognos BI Content. This enhancement makes it simple to share insights and collaborate with other users. Dashboards can be dropped into the chat window and other users can immediately start collaborating. They can discuss performance results, strategy, and opportunities and discover new insights about the data. Users can connect to new data sources as well as work with existing QMF queries and tables. QMF Vision now integrates with IBM Connections, enabling users to share and discuss dashboards created in QMF Vision across IBM Connections Communities. 1 This information provides only general descriptions of the types and portions of workloads that are eligible for execution on Specialty Engines (SEs). IBM authorizes customers to use IBM SEs such as ziips, zaaps, and IFLs only to execute the processing of Eligible Workloads of specific programs expressly authorized by IBM as specified in the Authorized Use Table for IBM Machines (AUT). No other workload processing is authorized for execution on an SE. IBM offers SEs at a lower price than General Processors and Central Processors because customers are authorized to use SEs only to process certain types or amounts of workloads as specified by IBM in the AUT. 4 A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be found on the Product accessibility information website. Value Unit-based pricing Value Unit pricing for eligible IBM z Systems IBM International Program License Agreement (IPLA) programs enables a lower cost of incremental growth and enterprise aggregation. Each z Systems IPLA product with Value Unit pricing has a single price per Value Unit and a conversion matrix, called Value Unit Exhibit, for converting from some designated measurement to Value Units. Most commonly, Millions of Service Units (MSUs) is the measurement designated by IBM to be converted to Value Units. Some other measurements are engines or messages. Since MSUs are the most common measurement, that measurement will be used for the remainder of this description. Value Unit pricing offers price benefits for you. For each z Systems IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, the quantity of that program needed to satisfy applicable IBM terms and conditions is referred to as the required license capacity. Each of the various Value Unit Exhibits stipulate that the larger your required license capacity, the fewer Value Units per MSU you will need. Value Unit Exhibits are uniquely identified by a three digit code and referred to using the nomenclature VUExxx, where xxx is the three-digit code. Subsequent acquisitions of Value Unit priced programs offer additional price benefits. The quantity of each z Systems IPLA program that you have acquired is referred to as entitled license capacity. If you want to grow your entitled license capacity for a z Systems IPLA program, the calculation to determine additional needed Value Units is based upon the number of Value Units already acquired. For each z Systems IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, you should: Determine the required license capacity, in MSUs. Aggregate the MSUs across the enterprise. Convert the total MSUs to Value Units, using the applicable Value Unit Exhibit. Multiply the price per Value Unit by the total number of Value Units to determine the total cost. To simplify conversion from the designated measurement to Value Units or viceversa, use the Value Unit Converter Tool. For additional information or to obtain a copy of the Value Unit Converter Tool, visit the Value Unit Converter Tool, go to the IBM System z (R) Software Pricing website. Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product. To determine the required license capacity for the z Systems IPLA program you selected, refer to the Terms and conditions section. Statement of good security practices IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
