1 Creating DigiKnow JPEG Slides Using Microsoft Powerpoint These instructions are to help you create a JPEG (.jpg) file for the University Unions DigiKnow digital signage system used in the Unions various facilities. We chose the presentation software Microsoft Powerpoint because it is probably the most universally available application on campus that allows graphic and text to be used together to create the JPEG graphic file we need for our Digiknow system. Apple Keynote which is Apple s version of a presentation application is also excellent. The Adobe Creative Suite contains several applications that are very well suited also, but they are both expensive and due to their extensive professional capabilities their use is more involved. This document is divided into three sections: 1. Tips and Important Information helpful to creating a file that is compatible with our system, meets our requirements, and effectively makes use of the screens to advertise your event, activity or program. 2. Examples of Effective Slides. 3. Step by Step Instructions complete with screen shots and comments to help you create a Powerpoint presentation from which you can save the JPEG (.jpg) format file that we need you to submit to us. These instructions assume you know the basics of working in Powerpoint and are intended to help you get a slide that is the right size, shape and format to work on the University Unions DigiKnow system. They were created on a Macintosh running 10.7.x (Lion) and Powerpoint from Office other operating systems and PP versions may operate somewhat differently. 2 Tips and Important Information The DigiKnow slides will display for about 6 seconds, so it is best to keep them bold and simple. If you are advertising through other media (print, posters, newspapers, your web site, etc.) it is good for them to have a common look to reinforce each other. Avoid too much detail or fine print, cover the essential things like: Who What When Where How Much - especially if it s Free! Sponsoring Department or RSO a URL or Phone # for more info There are a few example in the next section of what we consider to be effective slides. After the examples section are the step by step instructions. Slides should be submitted at 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels, landscape orientation. It must be a JPEG (.jpg) format file. No other file formats are accepted including videos, animation and/or movies. Keep important content away from the edges to avoid having it cut off by screen variations. page: 2 of 19
