2 Graphic organisers allow students to organise their thinking visually. They are great to use as part of a whole class brainstorming session on an interactive whiteboard, and assist students to make connections and see relationships between different concepts and ideas. They also model strategies for critical thinking and problem solving. Interactive graphic organisers may be created using TuxPaint. 1. Create graphic organiser or import an image for another template into PowerPoint. 2. Save the slide using the Save As option, and choose to save as a PNG image format (this is the file format that TuxPaint will recognise) 3. Open the drive where the TuxPaint program is saved, then navigate to TuxPaint and copy the PNG image file into the Data folder, in the starters folder. 4. Open Tuxpaint and choose the template as the background for the new Tuxpaint image 5. Add information as required.

3 A great speaking and listening activity for students is to have them work collaboratively to create a multimedia news report. This report may then be shared with parents or the wider school community. Photopeach easily allows students to create a slideshow of their news or show and tell, and also provides the option to include a quiz. It can be made private or accessible to only those who have the direct web link. The Photopeach can then be distributed via a web link or embedded into a blog for parents and others to view. A quick tutorial is below (adapted from a tutorial created by Andrea Tejedor).

6 Wonder Walls are spaces where teachers and students can record their questions and musings, so that others can share them and they can be followed up at a later date. A sharing time around the wonder wall, where teachers and students look at the different wonderings and explore strategies for finding solutions can be a very rich opportunity for speaking and listening. Using a Wonder Wall also assists students to formulate correctly constructed questions. Digital wonder walls can be created using Wall Wisher, a free tool that allows virtual post it notes to be shared. The post it notes can have text, images, videos and weblinks embedded, and can easily be added to or deleted. To create your own digital wonder wall: Go to You can build a wall without signing up, or you can click Login/Register on the top right hand side to create your own account where your walls can be saved. Build your wall, by following the instructions. Posts are made simply by double clicking anywhere on the board. Images, videos etc may also be embedded by pasting their web link into the bottom part of the post-it.

7 The traditional cloze activity becomes interactive and collaborative through the use of the forms feature in Microsoft Word. Although it may seem a little tricky the first time, creating an interactive form is quite simple. Use student created stories and add a range of options, or use teacher created stories to develop specific skills and knowledge. Instructions for Microsoft Office Word 2007 and 2010 are below.

8 Creating a form (Microsoft Word 2007) Step 1: Set up Word for creating forms 1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options. 2. Click Popular 3. Select the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon check box, and then click OK. Step 2: Open a template or a document on which to base the form 1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click New. 2. Under Templates, click My templates. 3. Double-click Normal, and then click Template or Document under Create New. 4. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Save As. 5. In the Save As dialog box, give the new template or document a file name, and then click Save. Step 3: Add content controls to the form On the Developer tab, in the Controls group, click Design Mode, and then click where you want to insert a control. Insert a drop-down list that restricts available choices to those you specify 1. On the Developer tab, in the Controls group, click the Drop-Down List control. 2. Select the content control, and then on the Developer tab, in the Controls group, click Properties. 3. To create a list of choices, under Drop-Down List Properties, click Add. 4. Type a choice in the Display Name box, such as Yes, No, or Maybe. Repeat this step until all of the choices are in the drop-down list.

9 Creating a form (Microsoft Word 2010) Step 1: Show the Developer tab 1. Click the File tab. 2. Click Options. 3. Click Customize Ribbon. 4. Under Customize the Ribbon, click Main Tabs. 5. In the list, select the Developer check box, and then click OK. Step 2: Open a template or a document on which to base the form Start with a blank template 1. Click the File tab. 2. Click New. 3. Under Available Templates, click My templates. 4. Under Create New, click Template, and then click OK. 5. Click the File tab again, and then click Save As. 6. In the Save As dialog box, type a file name for the new template, and then click Save. Step 3: Add content to the form On the Developer tab, in the Controls group, click Design Mode. Step 4: Insert a drop-down list In a drop-down list, users can only select from the list of choices. 1. On the Developer tab, in the Controls group, click the Drop-Down List Content Control. 2. Select the content control, and then on the Developer tab, in the Controls group, click Properties. 3. To create a list of choices, click Properties. 4. Type a choice in the Display Name box, such as Yes, No, or Maybe. Repeat this step until all of the choices are in the drop-down list.

10 A regular early years activity is to brainstorm ideas and to participate in whole class and small group sharing sessions. Using an online tool such as Bubbl.us, these concept maps can are colourful, interactive and easy to manipulate on an interactive whiteboard. Another advantage of using a digital concept map is that they can be saved and new ideas can be added to them at a later date.
