3 Overview Diagramming This document provides information to assist users with entering a crash scene diagram into the CRASH component of CRIS. Installation Once a user has completed registration they can log in to CRIS and select the CRASH application. If they do not already have Easy Street Draw installed the application will make note of this and install the add on. If your computer shuts down or the installation is unsuccessful please contact the CRASH Help Desk (number at the end of this document) for assistance. Understanding how the diagramming tool works Users are provided with a selection of standard intersection and non-intersection templates that they can use to begin a crash scene diagram. The standard templates are available to all CRASH users and include a multitude of intersection dynamics from 5 way interchanges to roundabouts and everything in between: CRASH User Guide - 3

5 Users can easily create diagrams in Easy Street Draw by selecting from the various layers and available art for each layer. From the Streets Layer a user can: Select a Roadway type Add/Remove lanes Change angle of intersecting roads Change curvature of roadway The Diagramming tool also has features that allow users to show the pavement marking symbols. 6 These include: Left/Right Turn Only Two Way Left Turn Lane Left/Right or Straight Handicap Crosswalk To see all the options select from the tree list that appears with each layer: The tree list changes when a different layer is selected. CRASH User Guide - 6

7 When users change to the Symbols Layer they can choose the pictures that represent various vehicle body styles that can be added to a crash scene diagram such as: Passenger Car, 4-Door Pickup Ambulance Bus CRASH User Guide - 7

8 Most vehicle symbols are also available in side and bottom (overturned) views. Users can then select roadway objects symbols. These include: Guard Rails Barriers Fences Utility Poles CRASH User Guide - 8

9 After roadway, objects and vehicles are added, users can select additional pictures to include traffic control information to be added to a crash scene diagram. These include: Stop Sign Yield Sign Railroad Crossing Sign Speed Limit Sign Traffic Signal Stop-and-Go Light Road Work/Construction Signs CRASH User Guide - 9

11 Users can also select other traffic related items such as animals and terrain. Users can toggle back to the Streets layer to select the appropriate directional arrows to show the travel path and impact points of the vehicles in a crash scene diagram. CRASH User Guide - 11

12 The diagramming tool also allows users to indicate cardinal direction on the diagram. The third layer Measurements also has a reference point marking tool. CRASH User Guide - 12

13 The diagramming tool allows users to label all roads and a symbol placed in the diagram and has a text label function that is independent of the other items in the diagram. CRASH User Guide - 13

14 Text can be made larger or smaller by selecting it and clicking on the Text Size buttons at the top: Using Templates Users can easily search for and retrieve templates available for use. For full information regarding Sharing Templates within your agency or Sharing Templates between agencies please reference the Managing Templates section of the CRASH User Guide. Users capture and display user-defined attributes that are associated with a template that assist users in retrieving the appropriate template. The attributes include the following: Template Name A field to indicate the sector or region/district/area associated with the template Block Number (for primary road) Street Name (for primary road) Block Number (for secondary road) Street Name (for secondary road) Users can display a set of previously saved templates for the user to select from that are associated with the location information the user entered on the crash. Users can employ filtering or searching by the attributes defined so the user can quickly identify and retrieve the desired template for use. Users can select and use previously created templates in creating a diagram to be used in a CRASH crash. When using a template, users can modify the details of the diagram in their crash without modifying the underlying template used for the diagram. Individual Templates Note this section pertains to templates that are not shared and are only for individual use. CRASH User Guide - 14

15 Users can save a diagram as a personal user template that they can use in future diagrams. (note storing of these templates does not have to be performed in a centralized manner). The user who owns a user template is the only person who can edit or delete it. When using a template, users can modify the details of the diagram in their crash without modifying the underlying template used for the diagram. Sharing Templates Note this section pertains to templates that are (or can be) shared. For full information regarding Sharing Templates within your agency or Sharing Templates between agencies please reference the Manage My Templates section of the CRASH User Guide. Only certain users known as CRASH Diagram Template Coordinators (CDTCs) - are able to create shared templates. CDTCs can edit or delete shared templates created by other investigators within their agency. Agency CRASH Managers can create and save a shared template with a user-defined template name and make it available to other users in their agency. The application allows one agency to copy a template created by another agency and save it as one of their own templates. (example Agency A has access to templates created by agency B. Agency A can save Agency B s template under Agency A and modify it as needed without impacting Agency B s template). There are limits to the size of an individual template and the total number of templates an agency may have. The application informs the user if their attempt to save a template would exceed the amount of template space allotted to their agency and will not allow the user to save the template until they have freed up enough space to allow the new template to be saved without exceeding their allotted amount of space. The application stores agency templates in a centralized manner that makes them available to all users authorized to use those templates. Users can store and retrieve up to 3 versions of a template. Editing a saved diagram Users can save a diagram and re-open the diagram to make additional edits as part of the process of submitting a CRASH report. A saved diagram is available for editing before the crash report is submitted to the application. A saved diagram is available for editing when the crash report is retrieved for supplementing. 16 If a diagram is changed when a crash report is supplemented, both the original and supplement versions of the diagram are saved. Only the most recent version of the diagram will be available for editing. Users can move and modify items in the diagram using the following tools: Select Copy Paste Delete Move Resize Undo Group Users can also adjust the position and scale of the display. These functions are: Zoom In Zoom Out Zoom Window Pan Zoom to Diagram Extents Printing Diagrams Users can print the diagram directly from the diagramming tool without having it embedded in the crash report form. Saving Diagrams Users will be prompted to save or discard any unsaved edits prior to navigating away from the diagram. Exporting Diagrams CRASH User Guide - 16

17 The diagramming tool allows users to save the diagram separately from the crash report form to a local image file such as PDF, TIF, or JPG. CRASH User Guide - 17

18 Importing Diagrams Users can import diagrams stored in a JPEG format for use in a CRASH diagram. When diagrams are imported they maintain the original proportion of width to height so that the diagram is not distorted. Users can then modify imported diagrams within CRASH by adding additional attributes.
