1 Instructions for Transit Performance Analyst May 2011 Introduction The Transit Performance Analyst was developed by the University of Minnesota, Minnesota Traffic Observatory (MTO) in collaboration with Metro Transit, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) was developed using Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 based on the.net framework, as shown in Figure 1, to automate data analysis and visualization. Time Point (TP) level analysis, inter-tp travel time and route performance analysis are available from the GUI interface. As shown in Figure 1, the application consists of five panels, select data, TP, TP to TP Travel Time (TT), Route, and a log textbox. A list of acronyms and abbreviations is included in Appendix. 3 Select Data The Select Data panel allows user to choose data provider, database, route, direction, service type, and data starting/ending date. Time Point (TP) The TP analysis allows users to select from the following options as shown in Figure 5 for TP analysis. Select desired analysis from the available options and click on the List Timepoints to generate available TPs along the selected route. Choose a TP from the Select Time Point drop-down list. Click on Plot to visualize the results. Figure 5 TP Analysis Panel For example, departure adherence at CEUN is illustrated in Figure 6. And TP time analysis is plotted in Figure 7. Use left mouse click to zoom in the graph or use right mouse on the graph to display more options for graph display as illustrated in Figure 8. The File menu under Graph window allows users to export the data to text file, set up printer or print a copy of the graph. Figure 6 Departure Adherence at Node CEUN

4 Figure 7 TP Time Analysis at CEUN Figure 8 Graph Options Using Right Mouse Click on the Graph TP to TP Travel Time (TT) The TP to TP Travel Time panel allows users to perform inter-tp link travel time, speed, and travel time distribution analyses as shown in Figure 9. Click on the List Patterns to generate available trip patterns of selected route and select a pattern. Click on List Segments to generate available link segments and select a segment. Choose options from travel time, travel speed or travel time distribution to visualize the results. For example, Figure 10 displays the link travel time between LWCE and 41CE. Top green line is the 85 percentile link TT and the bottom green line is the 15 percentile TT. The blue line is the observed mean travel time. Average link travel time is plotted in light green bar. The upper and lower bound settings can be configured from the statistical analysis settings as shown in Figure 3.

5 Figure 9 TP to TP Travel Time Analysis Panel Figure 10 Link Travel Time (LWCE 41CE, RTE10, NB) Route The Route analysis panel, as displayed in Figure 11, allows users to select a day and pattern of transit operation from selected route to visualize the time-space diagram as illustrated in Figure 12. The set TP ruler drop-down list allows users to move the TP ruler to desired hour of day. The font size of TP label can also be adjusted by choose the font size from the TP label size drop-down list.
