5 UDI Capital Region Development Tour 2017 Austin, Texas From September 20 23, 2017, we toured the city of Austin, Texas. It was hot, it was humid, it was awesome! Like Victoria, Austin has seen an increase in population over the last decade. It s a young city with an average age of less than 32 years old, much due to a large tech sector and the famous University of Texas. We were toured around downtown Austin, by Greg Kihlo, the Redevelopment Project Manager at City of Austin. We visited multiple developments downtown and in the neighbouring areas of downtown Austin Seaholm Development District, The Domain, Highland and Mueller. 3 takeaways from our development tour to Austin 1. Adaptive reuse of land Highland, a partnership built community college, was built at old mall site. Domain, a vibrant retail and residential community was built on a site that used to be IBM s administrative and manufacturing offices. The Mueller Development, a sustainable, multi-use community, was built on an old airport site. 2. Sustainability Austin s focus on sustainability was very evident, with a large focus on energy and water efficiency, green space preservation and creating walkable communities. We toured the brand new public library, a Lead Platinum certified building that opens to the public on October 28, Mueller Central is a Lead Gold certified building. The preservation of Waller Creek in downtown Austin is another great example of the their focus on sustainability and green space preservation. Partnerships The City of Austin partnered with developers on the Highland development, a community college, and awarded the developers tax subsidies for developing on repurposed land. In addition the City of Austin offers other cost reducing incentives for developers that focus on transit, green building practices and other community benefits. The various incentives are created to increase the affordable housing stock. 5

7 UDI Capital Region U40 Walking Tour with Chris Le Fevre, Le Fevre & Company On Tuesday, September 26, Chris Le Fevre, along with Joe Sopp and Paige Fehr from Le Fevre & Company toured U40 members around some of their amazing developments in Old Town, Victoria. We got a chance to see The Oriental, The Leiser and Lee Cheong & Lum Sam buildings, all beautiful heritage restoration projects completed by Le Fevre & Company. We then moved on to their Sales Gallery for a some refreshments and an informal Q&A session with Chris Le Fevre. The walking tour ended at Le Fevre & Company's newest project, Ironworks, on 515 Chatham St. Thanks again to Chris Le Fevre and everyone at Le Fevre & Company for taking time out of their day to give us a tour of some of their developments, past and future. 7
