1.3 Document convention 1.3 Document convention Throughout the document, the GSM engine are referred to a ME (Mobile Equipment), MS (Mobile Station), TA (Terminal Adapter), DCE (Data Communication Equipment) or facimile DCE (FAX modem, FAX board). To control your GSM engine you can imply end AT Command via it erial interface. The controlling device at the other end of the erial line i referred to a TE (Terminal Equipment), DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) or plainly 'the application' (probably running on an embedded ytem). All abbreviation and acronym ued throughout thi document are baed on the GSM pecification. For definition pleae refer to TR V7.0.0 ( ), (GSM 01.04, verion releae 1998) Quick reference table Each AT command decription include a table imilar to the example hown below. The table i intended a a quick reference to indicate the following function: PIN: I the AT command PIN protected? % Ye! No Uage i dependent on condition pecified for the command, or not all command type are PIN protected (for example write command PIN protected, read command not). Note: The table provided in Section 19.3, Available AT Command and Dependency on SIM PIN ue the ame ymbol. ASC0: I the AT command upported on the phyical erial interface ASC0? % Ye! No Note: In the cae of MC39i only "Ye" applie. MUXn: I the AT command uable on the Multiplexer channel MUX1, MUX2, MUX3? % Ye! No AT command i uable, but under the retriction pecified in the ection related to the command. Note: The column MUX1, MUX2 and MUX3 are relevant only when the GSM engine operate in Multiplexer mode, that i, when the phyical erial interface i partitioned into 3 virtual channel by uing the Multiplexer protocol. Uage i the ame on ASC0 and MUX1. I the AT command upported in ALARM mode? % Ye! No Lat: If command are concatenated, thi AT command mut be the lat one. % Ye! 15 1.3 Document convention Supercript notation for parameter and value Table 1.1: Symbol ued to mark the type of parameter Parameter type <param> (num) <param> (tr) Meaning Parameter value mut be numeric type Parameter value mut be tring type Table 1.2: Symbol ued to indicate the correlation with other command Parameter option <param> (&W) <param> (&V) <param> (ˆSNFW) <param> (+CSCS) Meaning Parameter value will be tored with AT&W Parameter value will be diplayed with AT&V Parameter value will be tored with AT^SNFW Parameter value ha to be (i) coded according to current etting of <chet> (ee AT+CSCS for detail) Table 1.3: Symbol ued to mark different type of default value of parameter Value option [x] x (&F) x (P) x (D) Meaning Default value: if the parameter i omitted, the value 'x' will be aumed Factory default value, will be retored to 'x' with AT&F Powerup default value of a parameter which i not tored at power down Delivery default value of a parameter which cannot be retored automatically MC39i_ATC_V02.00 Page 15 of 390 9/29/05

1.4 AT Command 1.4 AT Command The "AT" or "at" prefix mut be et at the beginning of each command line. To terminate a command line enter <CR>. Command are uually followed by a repone that include "<CR><LF><repone><CR><LF>". Throughout thi document, only the repone are preented, <CR><LF> are omitted intentionally. Table 1.4: Type of AT command and repone AT command type Function Tet command AT+CXXX=? The mobile equipment return the lit of parameter and value range et with the correponding Write command or by internal procee. Read command AT+CXXX? Thi command return the currently et value of the parameter or parameter. Write command AT+CXXX=<...> Thi command et uer-definable parameter value. Exec(ution) command AT+CXXX The execution command read non-variable parameter determined by internal procee in the GSM engine Uing Parameter Optional parameter are encloed in quare bracket. If optional parameter are omitted, the current etting are ued until you change them. Optional parameter or ubparameter can be omitted unle they are followed by other parameter. If you want to omit a parameter in the middle of a tring it mut be replaced by a comma. See alo example 1. A parameter value encloed in quare bracket repreent the value that will be ued if an optional parameter i omitted. See alo example 2. When the parameter i a character tring, e.g. <text> or <number>, the tring mut be encloed in quotation mark, e.g. "Charlie Brown" or "+49030xxxx". Symbol in quotation mark will be recognized a tring. All pace will be ignored when uing tring without quotaton mark. It i poible to omit the leading zero of tring which repreent number. If an optional parameter of a V.250 command i omitted, it value i aumed to be 0. Example 1: Omitting parameter in the middle of a tring AT+CCUG? +CCUG: 1,10,1 AT+CCUG=,9 AT+CCUG? +CCUG: 1,9,1 Query current etting Set only the middle parameter Query new etting Example 2: Uing default parameter value for optional parameter AT+CFUN=5 Activate CYCLIC SLEEP mode, don't reet ME AT+CFUN? 17 1.4 AT Command Combining AT command on the ame command line You may enter everal AT command on the ame line. Thi eliminate the need to type the "AT" or "at" prefix before each command. Intead, it i only needed once at the beginning of the command line. Ue a emicolon a command delimiter. The table below lit the AT command you cannot enter together with other command on the ame line. Otherwie, the repone may not be in the expected order. AT command type Comment V.250 command with FAX command (Prefix AT+F) GSM 7.07 command GSM 7.05 command (SMS) Command tarting with AT& AT+IPR with Siemen command, Prefix AT^S) To be ued tandalone To be ued tandalone To be ued tandalone Note: When concatenating AT command pleae keep in mind that the equence of proceing may be different from the equential order of command input. Therefore, if the conecutive order of the iued command and the aociated repone i your concern, avoid concatenating command on the ame line. MC39i_ATC_V02.00 Page 17 of 390 9/29/05

1.5 Supported character et 1.5 Supported character et The ME upport two character et: GSM (7 bit, alo referred to a GSM alphabet or SMS alphabet) and UCS2 (16 bit, refer to ISO/IEC 10646). See AT+CSCS for information about electing the character et. Character table can be found below. Explanation of term International Reference Alphabet (IRA) IRA mean that one byte i diplayed a two character in hexadecimal format. For example, the byte 0x36 (decimal 54) i diplayed a "36" (two character). IRA i ued here for input 8-bit or 16-bit data via terminal device uing text mode. Thi mean only character 'A'..F','a'..'f' and '0'..'9' are valid. Ecape equence The ecape equence ued within a text coded in the GSM default alphabet (0x1B) mut be correctly interpreted by the TE, both for character input and output. To the module, an ecape equence appear like any other byte received or ent. Terminal Adapter (TA) TA i ued equivalent to Mobile Equipment (ME) which tand for the GSM module decribed here. It ue GSM default alphabet a it character et. Terminal Equipment (TE) TE i the device connected to the TA via erial interface. In mot cae TE i an ANSI/ASCII terminal that doe not fully upport the GSM default alphabet, for example MS Hyperterminal. TE Character Set The character et currently ued by Terminal Equipment i elected with AT+CSCS. Data Coding Scheme (dc) DCS i part of a hort meage and i aved on the SIM. When writing a hort meage to the SIM in text mode, the dc tored with AT+CSMP i ued and determine the coded character et. The behavior when encountering character, that are not valid character of the upported alphabet, i undefined. Due to the contraint decribed below it i recommended to prefer the USC2 alphabet in any external application. If the GSM alphabet i elected all character ent over the erial line (between TE and TA) are in the range from 0 to 127 (7 Bit range). CAUTION: ASCII alphabet (TE) i not GSM alphabet (TA/ME)! Several problem reulting from the ue of GSM alphabet with ASCII terminal equipment: "@" character with GSM alphabet value 0 i not printable by an ASCII terminal program (e.g. Microoft Hyperterminal ). "@" character with GSM alphabet value 0 will terminate any C tring! Thi i becaue the 0 i defined a C tring end tag. Therefore, the GSM Null character may caue problem on application level when uing a 'C'- function a "trlen()". Thi can be avoided if it i repreented by an ecape equence a hown in the table below. By the way, thi may be the reaon why even network provider often replace "@"with "@=*" in their SIM application. Other character of the GSM alphabet are miinterpreted by an ASCII terminal program. For example, GSM "ö" (a in "Böre") i aumed to be " " in ASCII, thu reulting in "B re". Thi i becaue both alphabet mean different character with value hex. 7C or 00 and o on. In addition, decimal 17 and 19 which are ued a XON/XOFF control character when oftware flow control i activated, are interpreted a normal character in the GSM alphabet. When you write character differently coded in ASCII and GSM (e.g. Ä, Ö, Ü), you need to enter ecape equence. Such a character i tranlated into the correponding GSM character value and, when output later, the GSM character value can be preented. Any ASCII terminal then will how wrong repone. MC39i_ATC_V02.00 Page 18 of 390 9/29/05

1.5 Supported character et Table 1.5: GSM character Example for character definition depending on alphabet GSM character hex. value Correponding ASCII character ASCII Ec equence Hex Ec equence Ö 5C \ \5C 5C " 22 " \22 5C ò 08 BSP \08 5C NULL \00 5C CAUTION: Often, the editor of terminal program do not recognize ecape equence. In thi cae, an ecape equence will be handled a normal character. The mot common workaround to thi problem i to write a cript which include a decimal code intead of an ecape equence. Thi way you can write, for example, hort meage which may contain differently coded character. MC39i_ATC_V02.00 Page 19 of 390 9/29/05

1.5 Supported character et GSM alphabet table and UCS2 character value Thi ection provide table for the GSM alphabet upported by the ME. Below any GSM character find the correponding two byte character value of the UCS2 alphabet. (For related mapping definition ee: Figure 1.1: Main character table of GSM alphabet 1) Thi code i an ecape to the following extenion of the 7 bit default alphabet table. 2) Thi code i not a printable character and therefore not defined for the UCS2 alphabet. It hall be treated a the accompanying control character. MC39i_ATC_V02.00 Page 20 of 390 9/29/05

1.5 Supported character et Figure 1.2: Extenion character table of GSM alphabet 1) Thi code value i reerved for the extenion to another extenion table. On receipt of thi code, a receiving entity hall diplay a pace until another extenion table i defined. 2) Thi code repreent the EURO currency ymbol. The code value i the one ued for the character 'e'. Therefore a receiving entity which i incapable of diplaying the EURO currency ymbol will diplay the character 'e' intead. 3) Thi code i defined a a Page Break character and may be ued for example in compreed CBS meage. Any mobile which doe not undertand the 7 bit default alphabet table extenion mechanim will treat thi character a Line Feed. MC39i_ATC_V02.00 Page 21 of 390 9/29/05

1.5 Supported character et In the event that an MS receive a code where a ymbol i not repreented in Figure 1.2, Extenion character table of GSM alphabet the MS hall diplay the character hown in the main default 7 bit alphabet table (ee Figure 1.1, Main character table of GSM alphabet) UCS2 and GSM data coding and converion for SMS text mode Thi ection provide baic information on how to handle input and output character converion for SMS text mode and Remote-SAT if internal (TA) and external (TE) character repreentation differ, i.e. if the Data Coding Scheme and the TE character ue different coding Implementing output of SIM data to Terminal (direction TA to TE) Ued character et DCS = 7 bit GSM DCS = 8 bit Data DCS = 16 bit UCS2 GSM Cae 1 GSM (1:1) Cae 2 8 bit to IRA (1:2) Cae 3 UCS2 to IRA (2:4) UCS2 Cae 4 GSM to IRA (1:4) Cae 5 8 bit to IRA (1:4) Note: The ratio of SIM byte to output byte i given in parenthee. 23 1.5 Supported character et Implementing input of Terminal data to SIM (direction TE to TA) Ued character et DCS = 7 bit GSM DCS = 8 bit Data DCS = 16 bit UCS2 GSM Cae 1 GSM (1:1) Cae 2 IRA to 8 bit (2:1) Cae 3 IRA to 16 bit (4:2) UCS2 Cae 4 UCS2 to GSM (4:1) Cae 5 UCS2 to 8 bit (4:1) Cae 6 UCS2 to 16 bit (4:2) Note: The ratio between the number of input character and byte tored on the SIM i given in parenthee. Cae 1 Every character i ent from TE to TA a GSM character (or ASCII with tandard terminal emulation, e.g. Hyperterminal). Character value mut be in range from 0 to 127 becaue of 7-bit GSM alphabet. To reach maximum SMS text length of 160 character in 140 byte pace character will be compreed on SIM. Thi mut be et uing the parameter <dc> of AT+CSMP (add 64). Example: "ABCDEFGH" typed i ent and tored uncompreed a 'H (tored compreed a 41E E91'H) Cae 2 Every data byte i ent a 2 IRA character. Maximum text length i 280 IRA character which will be converted into 140 byte SMS binary uer data Example: "C8" typed i ent a 43'H, 38'H tored a C8'H Cae 3 Every 16-bit value i ent a 4 IRA character. Maximum text length i 280 IRA character which will be converted into 70 UCS2 character (16-bit each) Number of IRA character mut be a multiple of four becaue alway 4 half byte are needed for a 16-bit value Example: "D2C8" typed i ent a 44'H, 32'H, 43'H, 38'H tored a D2C8'H Cae 4 Every GSM character i ent a 4 IRA character repreenting one UCS2 character. Example: To tore text "ABC" uing UCS2 character et you have to type " ". Thi i ent a 30'H,30'H,34'H,31'H, 30'H,30'H,34'H,32'H, 30'H,30'H,34'H,33'H detected a IRA repreentation of 3 UCS2 character, converted to GSM character et and tored a 41'H, 42'H, 43'H. Maximum input i 640 IRA character repeenting 160 UCS2 character when compreion i active. Thee are converted to 160 GSM 7-bit character. Without compreion only 140 GSM character can be tored which are put in a 560 IRA character. Value of UCS2 character mut be maller than 80'H (128 decimal) to be valid GSM character. Number of IRA character mut be a multiple of four. Problem: "41" Error, there are four IRA character (two byte) needed "0000" Error, not an UCS2 character "4142" Error, value of UCS2 character > 7F'H "008B" Error, value of UCS2 character > 7F'H Thi affect the maximum input length of a tring) Cae 5 Every UCS2 character i ent a 4 IRA character and i converted into two 8-bit value. Thi mean that the firt two character have to be '00'. Example: UCS2 character 009F'H typed a "009F" i ent a 30'H,30'H,39'H,46'H converted into 8-bit value 9F'H. Maximum number of UCS2 character i 140 which are repreented by 560 IRA character. Number of IRA character mut be a multiple of four. Cae 6 Every UCS2 character i ent a 4 IRA character each and i converted into a 16-bit value again. Example: UCS2 character 9F3A'H typed a "9F3A" i ent a 39'H,46'H,33'H,41'H converted into 9F3A'H. Maximum number of UCS2 character i 70 which are repreented by 280 IRA character. Number of IRA character mut be a multiple of four. Invalid UCS2 value mut be prevented. 24 1.6 Serial Interface Flow Control 1.6 Serial Interface Flow Control Flow control i eential to prevent lo of data or avoid error when, in a data or fax call, the ending device i tranferring data fater than the receiving ide i ready to accept. When the receiving buffer reache it capacity, the receiving device hould be capable to caue the ending device to paue until it catche up. There are baically two approache to regulate data flow: Software flow control and hardware flow control. The High Watermark of the input/output buffer hould be et to approximately 60% of the total buffer ize. The Low Watermark i recommended to be about 30%. The data flow hould be topped when the capacity rie cloe to the High Watermark and reumed when it drop below the Low Watermark. The time required to caue top and go reult in a hyterei between the High and Low Watermark. During Multiplex mode (AT+CMUX) it i recommended to ue hardware flow control Software Flow Control (XON/OFF Handhake) Software flow control end different character to top (XOFF, decimal 19) and reume (XON, decimal 17) data flow. The only advantage of oftware flow control i that three wire would be ufficient on the erial interface Hardware Flow Control (RTS/CTS Handhake) Hardware flow control et or reet the RTS/CTS wire. Thi approach i fater and more reliable, and therefore, the better choice. When the High Watermark i reached, CTS i et inactive until the tranfer from the buffer ha completed. When the Low Watermark i paed, CTS goe active again. To achieve mooth data flow, enure that the RTS/CTS line are preent on your application platform. The application hould include option to enable RTS/CTS handhake with the GSM engine. Thi need to be done with the AT command AT\Q3 - it i not ufficient to et RTS/CTS handhake in the ued Terminal program only. The default etting of the GSM engine i AT\Q0 (no flow control) which mut be altered to AT\Q3 (RTS/CTS hardware handhake on). The etting i tored volatile and mut be retored each time after the GSM engine wa witched off. AT\Q ha no read command. To verify the current etting of AT\Q, imply check the etting of the active profile with AT&V. Often, fax program run an intialization procedure when tarted up. The intialization commonly include enabling RTS/CTS hardware handhake, eliminating the need to et AT\Q3 once again. However, before etting up a CSD call, you are advied to check that RTS/CTS handhake i et. RTS/CTS hardware handhake mut alo be et if you want to take advantage of the CYCLIC SLEEP mode. For further detail refer to AT+CFUN. MC39i_ATC_V02.00 Page 24 of 390 9/29/05

1.7 Unolicited Reult Code Preentation 1.7 Unolicited Reult Code Preentation URC tand for Unolicited Reult Code and i a report meage iued by the ME without being requeted by the TE, i.e. a URC i iued automatically when a certain event occur. Hence, a URC i not iued a part of the repone related to an executed AT command. Typical event leading to URC are incoming call ("RING"), waiting call, received hort meage, change in temperature, network regitration etc. A lit of all URC can be found in Section 19.7, Summary of Unolicited Reult Code (URC). To announce a pending URC tranmiion the ME will do the following: The ME activate it RING line (logic "1") for 1 econd, i.e. the RING line change to the phyical "Low" level. Thi allow the TE to tay in power aving mode until an ME related event requet ervice. If everal URC occur coincidently or in quick ucceion each URC trigger the RING line independently, although the line will not be deactivated between each URC. A a reult, the RING line may tay low for more than 1 econd. If an incoming call i anwered within le than 1 econd (with ATA or if autoanwering i et to ATS0=1) than the RING line will be deactivated earlier. The "^SHUTDOWN" URC will not activate the RING line. If the AT command interface i buy a "BREAK" will be ent immediately but the URC will not be iued until the line i free. Thi may happen if the URC i pending in the following cae: - During the proceing of an AT command (i.e. the time after the TE echoe back the firt character "A" of an AT command jut ent by itelf until the ME repond with "" or "ERROR"). - During a data call. Pleae note that AT command etting may be neceary to enable in-band ignaling, e.g. refer to AT+CMER or AT+CNMI. It i trongly recommended to ue the multiplex mode to map logical communication channel onto the erial line of the MC39i, for detail refer to [5] and AT command AT+CMUX. Doing o it i poible to ue one channel to till proce URC while having a data call active on another. For mot of thee meage, the ME need to be configured whether or not to end a URC. Depending on the AT command, the URC preentation mode can be aved to the uer defined profile (ee AT&W), or need to be activated every time you reboot the ME. Several URC are not uer definable, uch a "^SYSSTART", "^SYSSTART <text>", "^SHUTDOWN" and the Fax Cla 2 URC lited in Section 11.1, FAX parameter. If autobauding i enabled (a factory default mode or et with AT+IPR=0), URC generated after retart will be output with bp until the ME ha detected the current bit rate. The URC "^SYSSTART", "^SYSSTART <text>", however, are not preented at all. For detail pleae refer to Section 4.7.1, Autobauding. To avoid problem we recommend to configure a fixed bit rate rather than uing autobauding Communication between Cutomer Application and MC39i Leaving hardware flow control unconidered the Cutomer Application (TE) i coupled with the MC39i (ME) via a receive and a tranmit line. Since both line are driven by independent device colliion may (and will) happen, i.e. while the TE iue an AT command the MC39i tart ending an URC. Thi will probably lead to the TE' miinterpretation of the URC being part of the AT command' repone. To avoid thi conflict the following meaure mut be taken: If an AT command i finihed (with "" or "ERROR") the TE hall alway wait at leat 100 milliecond before ending the next one. Thi give the MC39i the opportunity to tranmit pending URC and get neceary ervice. Note that ome AT command may require more delay after "" or "ERROR" repone, refer to the following command pecification for detail. The TE hall communicate with the MC39i uing activated echo (ATE1), i.e. the MC39i echoe character received from the TE. Hence, when the TE receive the echo of the firt character "A" of the AT command jut ent by itelf it ha control both over the receive and the tranmit path. MC39i_ATC_V02.00 Page 25 of 390 9/29/05

1.8 Error and Meage 1.8 Error and Meage The command reult code "+CME ERROR: <err>" and "+CMS ERROR: <err>" indicate error related to mobile equipment or network functionality. The format of <err> can be either numeric or verboe and i electable via AT+CMEE. A reult error code terminate the execution of the command and prevent the execution of all remaining command that may follow on the ame command line. If o, neither "ERROR" nor "" reult code are returned for thee command. A 30 econd timeout will deliver "ERROR" when the input of a command i not complete. Uing the wrong command yntax may reult in error: For example, uing the execute command yntax although the command ha no execute format, caue "ERROR" to be returned. Likewie, uing the write command yntax although the command ha no write format caue "+CME ERROR: <err>" to be returned. See alo: Section , CME/CMS Error Code Overview Section 2.5.1, Verboe and numeric reult code Section 3.4, AT+CEER MC39i_ATC_V02.00 Page 26 of 390 9/29/05
