As shown in the diagram below, a number of mcolor Clients on user PCs let users control workflows and submit jobs for printing. The Clients communicate with mcolor Server, which submits PDF or PostScript jobs to the Navigator RIP. The jobs are converted to PageBuffer (PGB) format and passed to the mcolor plugin. This converts them to ZX format and outputs them to USBSend for transfer to the printer. The mcolor Toolbox may be run on any Client PC to monitor the status of the printer via a web browser. Q. The mcolor installer is reporting "There was a problem installing mvusbcomm ( )". How can I correct this? A. Click OK to dismiss the errorr dialog and let the installer run to completion. Then open the mvusbcomm folder (the default location is C:\mColor\toolbox\mvusbcomm\) and double-click "install.bat". You may need to accept a User Account Control dialog to give permission. If that does not work, try remove.bat followed by install.bat. Q. How can I tell whether the mvusbcomm driver is running? A. In the Computer Management dialog, select Device Manager in the left pane, and in the right pane, under Universal Serial Bus controllers, look for USBCOMM Device Driver. Q. AVG Antivirus package reports "Threat detected", "C:\mColor\toolbox\usb2http.exe". A. This is a false threat identification; allow it to run. Usb2http.exe is the Server program for

2 the mcolor toolbox. Q. What does the mcolor installer install? (Simple version) A. At the chosen location, which by default is C:\mColor, the installer places: Folder Navigator 9.0r1 containing the RIP software. The RIP executable is named "XITRON.exe" for the full version, and "XITRON_WM.exe" for the demo mode version. It will be started automatically. The RIP is used to process incoming PDF and PostScript files and supply them, via a plugin, to the printer. Folder mcolor containing the mcolor Server and Client. The Server runs on a single PC and communicates with the RIP and mcolor Clients. The mcolor Clients may run on several PCs networked to the mcolor Server PC, and display the printing workflows, allowing jobs to be printed and controlled. A separate installer is provided to install just mcolor Client. Folder toolbox containing the mcolor toolbox software (toolbox.exe). This requires usb2http.exe to be running. An "mcolor" folder in the Start menu with shortcuts to starting the mcolor Server and Client, and running the mcolor Toolbox. There are also shortcuts to run the RIP, to uninstall the product and, if it was installed in demo mode, a shortcut to convert the product to full mode. A Startup shortcut for the mcolor Toolbox server, which launches C:\mColor\toolbox\usb2http.exe via a VBScript startup.vbs in the Toolbox folder. This allows usb2http to run invisibly, with no console window. Other drivers needed by mcolor, such as the dongle driver.

This file contains the path to the RIP, which is launched by mcolor Server when it starts. Q. Where are the paths to the shared folders, and other settings stored? A. In mcolorserver.ini in the Windows directory. Q. How can I select the M Series plugin? A. In the Navigator RIP, device menu (initially this is labelled Preview ), select Select Device.... Then, in the Select Output Device dialog, select M Series Printer and Select. The Device menu will now be labelled M Series Printer. In the M Series Printer menu, select Open License Dialog. Enter the license key and Enable. Q. How can I enter a Global password for the M Series plugin? A. Passwords are fewer than ten characters long and are numeric. They may be entered when first installing mcolor the installer will prompt for them. In case you need to enter one at another time: If you have not already done so, follow the instructions in How can I select the M Series plugin? above. In the Navigator RIP, select Navigator->Configure RIP... Click Extras. In the scrollable list of RIP Extras, select MSeriesPrinter, MSeriesPrinter.

4 Click Add, and enter the password in the Enable Feature dialog; OK. Q. How can I enter a Xitron license key for the M Series plugin? A. License keys are more than ten characters long and are a mix of letters and digits. If you have not already done so, follow the instructions in How can I select the M Series plugin? above. In the M Series Printer menu, select Open License Dialog. Enter the license key and Enable. Q. How can I change the M Series plugin settings? A. The mcolor installer installs the recommended settings. If you need to change these: If you have not already done so, follow the instructions in How can I select the M Series plugin? above. In the M Series Printer menu, select Open Settings Dialog. Make any necessary changes in this dialog, as advised by Xitron Support. Q. How can I change the M Series plugin configuration? A. The mcolor installer installs the recommended configuration. If you need to change it: In the Navigator RIP, select Navigator Page Setup Manager... Select a Page Setup, and Edit. In the Edit Page Setup dialog, the selected Device will be M Series Printer. Select Configure device... and make any changes to the plugin configuration, as guided by Xitron Support. Q. The printer is not printing. A. Check whether output is disabled in the Navigator RIP s Output Controller. If it is, the M Series Printer icon in the mcolor Client will be labelled Disabled as shown below. To correct this, in the Navigator RIP, select Output Output Controller. Uncheck Disable output as shown below. Q. Output is enabled in the Navigator RIP, but the printer still will not output. The RIP monitor (and the RIP Manager RIP log) shows that it is retrying output, and reports: %$Process USBSend is still running - there may have been a problem with the printer. A. Follow this procedure: 1. If there is a paper jam in the printer, clear it. 2. Check that there is paper in the printer, and press the printer's 'PAPER/RESUME' button. If the problem persists, it is possible that the application which outputs to the printer, USBSend.exe has been left running (if so, it will be listed in the Windows Task Manager). If so: 1. In the RIP's Output controller, check Disable output. 2. Drag the job from the middle box at the top to Active queue, to stop the RIP from repeatedly trying to output. 3. If you have not already done so, follow the instructions in How can I select the M Series plugin? above.

5 4. In the RIP, select M Series Printer Reset Printer Connection. 5. In the RIP's Output controller, uncheck Disable output. Q. Some pages are being printed blank, or the printer is feeding a partial sheet of paper after my job, possibly resulting in a paper jam. A. In the mcolor Client, select the workflow you are using in the left sidebar. Then enter the workflow editor by clicking the wrench icon. In the RIP tab, select the configuration Complex art, Photos as shown below. Click the wrench to exit the workflow editor. Q. When printing a multi-page job where the pages are not all of the same width, some blank pages are printed or the printer feeds a partial sheet of paper after the job. A. In the mcolor Client, select the workflow you are using in the left sidebar. Then enter the workflow editor by clicking the wrench icon. In the RIP Output tab, deselect the Collect pages before printing setting as shown below. Click the wrench to exit the workflow editor. Q. The customer wishes to run in demo mode. A. Install mcolor, selecting Demonstration when prompted by the installer. Q. The customer is running in demo mode but has now purchased a full dongle. A. Quit mcolor Server (File Exit), and in the Start menu select Start mcolor Convert to full. Then restart mcolor Server. Q. How does the demo mode / full mode setting work? A. There is a text file "harlequinrip.txt" which gives contains the path to the RIP; this is used when mcolor Server launches, to start the RIP. The location of this file is C:\Program Files\Harlequin\SOAR\Services\5.2r0\Final\allall\all\config\harlequinrip.txt The normal RIP is C:\mColor\Navigator 9.0r1\Xitron.exe. When running in demo mode, a variant of this, the "Watermark" RIP is used instead. This is XITRON_WM.exe. The Start menu "Convert to full" entry runs a batch file which copies fullharlequinrip.txt over harlequinrip.txt. This.bat files contains a preamble which causes the UAC dialog to be displayed, so that the operation can be performed with Administrator privileges. Q. How does the M_Series printer RIP plugin output to the printer? A. It writes <name>.zx files to the path configured in the "Save Files To:" field of the M Series Printer Plugin configuration dialog. It calls Rena's usbsend.exe application, providing the path to the.zx file. This causes the.zx file to be printed. Q. What is the IAPI.dll used for? A. The M_Series printer RIP plugin receives bands of image data from RIP. It passes these to the IAPI.dll, which returns processed data which the plugin writes to the ZX file. Q. How can the M_Series printer RIP plugin be configured? A. In addition to the plugin configuration dialog, there is a.ini file, <RIP>\SW\Devices\M_Series\M_Series.ini The file contains containing some controls not exposed in the user-interface. The file contains

6 for example: [M_Series] SplitJobPageCount=0 DeleteAfter=1 DeleteOnError=1 DebugLevel=0x100 PrintMonoColor=black PrintSpotColor=black UseBatch=0 UseTempFile=0 DeleteTempFile=0 DumpToTiff=0 DumpData=0 The settings below may be changed: Name Permissible values Meaning SplitJobPageCount If this is set to a non-zero value, the.zx file(s) for a multi-page job will limited to contain no more than the specified number of pages. DeleteAfter DeleteOnError 1=Delete, 0=Don't delete. 1=Delete, 0=Don't delete. If the "Collect pages before printing" option is unchecked in the configuration dialog, the above setting will be ignored, and a separate.zx file will be generated for each page. Determines whether.zx files will be deleted once they have been printed. Controls whether the.zx file will be retained after a print error occurs. This and the DeleteOnError may be used if the development team request a.zx file to troubleshoot a problem. DebugLevel 0x000 through 0x10F Contains a hexadecimal number to control the log information written by the plugin. The first digit may be set to 1 to send debug output to DbgOut.log. The second and third digits control the logging level (larger value for more detail). The settings below should not be changed unless specifically requested by Xitron: Name PrintMonoColor PrintSpotColor Permissible values cyan, magenta, yellow, black, all cyan, magenta, yellow, black, all, match Meaning Applies only if the RIP's page setup is set to produce monochrome output. Determines which color separation is used when print monochrome data (so, for example this could be set to cause monochrome images to be printed with cyan ink). Applies only if the RIP's page setup is set to produce separated output. Determines which color separation is used when print separated data (so, for example this could be set to cause

7 UseBatch LogFileSizeLimitKB 0=Use usbsend.exe, 1=Use usbsend.bat. 0...n (Kilobytes) Default: 2048 all color separations to be printed in cyan). 'match' will print cyan with cyan ink, etc. Specifies how the plugin should output the.zx files to the printer. Use of usbsend.bat, allows additional output steps to be edded in the.bat file. (Uncomment line 22, "call "%_EXE%" "%_FILE%" or no output will occur). If the log file size exceeds this value, it is moved to LogFile.old, overwriting any previous one, and the log file is emptied. (The M Series plugin does not use the log file size setting in Xitron33.ini) PrintEngineBufferSize 0...n (Bytes) Default: 0 This value tells the plugin how large the printer s internal page buffer is. If a page for multi-copy job exceeds this size, it must be submitted to the engine multiple times, otherwise only one copy will be printed. DuplicatorMode ForceCopyCount DumpToTiff DumpData 0: Never use duplicator mode 1: Use duplicator mode when necessary Default: n Default: 0 0=Don't create TIFF, 1=Create TIFF 0=Output, 1=Discard Normally this is set to 0, and a hard-coded value of 11.5MB is used for the Engine s internal buffer size. If the M Series plugin is used to drive a future version of the printer with a different internal page buffer size, its size may be specified here. Duplicator mode is used when printing multiple copies of large pages which exceed the print engine s page buffer size. If it is determined that the a page exceeds the buffer size, the plugin will use Duplicator mode, sending the ZX data for the page to the ZX file multiple times in order to print multiple copies. This setting may be used to disable this behaviour, which may result in large pages only being printed once in multi-copy mode. It is for testing purposes only. If this setting is zero, the number of copies specified by the RIP will be honored. If this setting is non-zero, the RIP s copy count will be overridden, and the specified number of copies will be printed. Specifies whether to create a TIFF (in addition to the zx file) containing the page image. Set this to 1 to discard data rather than output it.

8 Q. Where is the plugin's log information written? A. DbgOut.log in RIP's SW directory, if the DebugLevel is 1xx, otherwise it is sent to the RIP Monitor only. The default path for this is "C:\mColor\Navigator 9.0r1\SW\DbgOut.log" Q. How can I run the mcolor if the PC is not on a network? I m finding that the RIP is not launched when I run mcolor Server. A. You ll need to install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter to provide a virtual network card. This procedure may be performed without a network connection. For Windows 7 the procedure is as follows: 1. Exit mcolor Server and Client. 2. In the Start menu, use the search box to search for cmd. Right-click cmd.exe and Run as Administrator. 3. In the cmd window, enter hdwwiz.exe to enter the Add Hardware wizard; click Next. 4. Select Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced), Next. 5. In the list, select Network Adapters, Next. 6. Under Manufacturers, select Microsoft. Under Network Adapter, select Microsoft Loopback Adapter, Next, Next to start installation. Click Finish at the end. 7. To confirm that the new network adapter is installed, in the Start menu, right-click Computer and select Manage. In the Computer Management dialog, Click Device Manager; expand Network Adapters; Microsoft Loopback Adapter should appear in the list. If you launch mcolor Server, the RIP should be launched. Q. What does the mcolor installer install? (Detailed version) A. A complete pre-configured system, RIP, RIP Manager, Workflows, Actions, RIP configuration, RIP utilities, M Series Printer Toolbox. The user is prompted for ColorPro and M Series Printer passwords. The installation process occurs in the following order: 1. Stops and removes any existing Harlequin License Server, and installs a new one (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Global Graphics Software\Harlequin License Server\bin\hqn_lsd.exe). 2. Installs pre-configured RIP, RIP Manager, M Series Printer toolbox in the chosen location. 3. Installs the Visual C runtime required by the Harlequin RIP and License Server. 4. Installs the mvusbcomm drivers required by usb2http.exe (which communicates with the printer and is used by the Toolbox). 5. Installs the RIP's License Server files to C:\Program Files\Common Files\. 6. Installs the Harlequin License Server. 7. Writes the path to the RIP to the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Xitron, Inc.\Navigator\TargetDir). 8. Records that the Server is installed, in the registry (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\XiFlow Server Installed). 9. Creates desktop, launch bar and Start menu shortcuts, including Startup shortcuts for the server used by the toolbox (usb2http.exe). 10. Installs the Sentinel dongle driver. 11. Installs SOAR files into the RIP. 12. Installs SOAR files to C:\Program Files\Harlequin\ 13. Localises paths in soar_state_dir.txt and pdfconversionserver.txt 14. Creates versions of harlequinrip.txt with localised paths to the full and Watermark RIPs. 15. Updates the coreconfig file. 16. Makes the XiFlowPGB and XiFlowRedir folders 17. (Via a VBScript which is deleted after use) Edits the ConfigureRIP file, correct XiFlowPGBDir and XiFlowRedir paths and creates these folders; edits XiFlowExtraStart. 18.
